is either used for providing extra inputs or interfaces to an existing piece of hardware, or to verify that you own a piece of software/Pro Tools plug in.
S/PDIF stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interface and is a (usually coaxial) standard for digital audio, similar to an optical lead in that it sends digital, lossless data, rather than a standard audio cable.
I wish I could figure out how to set my protools up so it doesn't default to s/pdif inputs. I NEVER use digital things, just the two mic inputs. If computers are so clever, they should have noticed this by now
