Music Social More…

Does anyone use www.tv-links.co.uk?

I can't work out whether

a) the best thing in the world or
b) a destructive plague to society

I may be a but behind the times here, but I can't believe such a site exists - you can already watch the simpsons movie on there if you choose, (although not in perfect quality), but the point is its right there if you want it. Literally two mouse clicks away for anyone reading this.

Am I one of few remaining people who savour such old fashioned things as going to the cinema, buying DVD's and CD's and being excited about getting home and listening to them, looking forward to a good programme on TV etc?

Peronsally I don't care much for a society where everything is completely on tap, films, programmes, music, whatever, free, whenever you want it.

I feel it encourages a sort of lazy, apathetic attitude, where people are spoiled with riches and unappreciative of the artistry, talent and effort thats been afforded into various media forms

Sites like this cheapen visual arts for me, reducing beautiful films to just a cheap and disposable link on a bland web page

To think that you can just sit through Pan's Labyrinth (for example) for nothing degrades it for me, and makes me feel unappreciative, like I've completely undermined the filmmakers and therefore don't deserve to watch it.

I'm very probably in a large minority here, but does anyone see my point or agree?

www.alluc.org , but they're all the same in the end.

    • I see your point

and to an extent I agree. I still like buying cd's dvds and going the cinema and think its sad when people abandon doing any of these in favour of online content.
However when I was at uni last year with a crap tv Tv-links was a great way of keeping up with what my friends were watching.

  • yes

but the technology will also be used to make more low budget films avaliable that wouldnt have been. Which is a good thing.

Double edged sword, as with everything.

    yes_ | 31 Jul '07, 00:44 | X
    • but yeah

its just because people = shit that all this stuff is avaliable.

      Slipknot speak truth...

  • I watched the simpsons movie yesterday

because I'm not the biggest fan of the simpsons but I was curious... for the simpsons movie the quality isn't really important... You can't enjoy films like Pans Labyrinth as much on tv-links so I tend not to use it for them...

  • The fact that so many people

must live there lives vicariously through the internet is surely not good in the long term?

Oh and then you take into account social networking sites, its a bit shitty in my opinion, I'm glad I'm not 16 where Facebook and real life are probably about on a par

    beautiful_balloon | 31 Jul '07, 00:50 | X
    • Speaking as a 16 year old

      they're not on par.
As I said, there have always been idiots. The idiots tend to be in the majority, so stuff gets created for them, and goes out of control.

      yes_ @beautiful_balloon | 31 Jul '07, 00:53 | X
      • maybe not amongst your

group of friends, but I work with some people at a pub who are 16 and its pretty much the main topic of conversation always

        beautiful_balloon @yes_ | 31 Jul '07, 00:54 | X
        • but you're correct in that

          they are idiots

          beautiful_balloon @beautiful_balloon | 31 Jul '07, 00:55 | X
    • real life and facebook link together too

it's just a way of keeping in touch with people, like mobile phones, or msn.

I don't know whether that's a good thing. i could be sitting on my own reading a book now. but instead i've been reading what you've said, thought about it a bit, responded; and at the same time i'm watching an episode of horizon from the 80s, and talking to one of my friends about what they're doing for the rest of the week, and i've emailed my landlord about the gas safety inspection we have tomorrow...

i'm sure in the past people would have just switched off from all this social contact by this time of night.

      • ^ this

the distinction between 'online' and 'real' life are beginning to break down in a really unprecedented way.

The internet is just a new aspect of reality.

  • *is prompted to watch next episode of Heroes*

I kind of agree to an extent, though trying to stop it now would be kind of Canutesque. (I think I just made that word up, but I like it.)

I do hope that one consequence of this new access revolution will be the democratisation of music, TV etc.

I'm not convinced that the potential collapse of high budget filmmaking etc. is necessarily a bad thing, though we're going to need to establish some kind of middle ground.

Ideally this would lead to people funding this kind of thing out of goodwill rather than a nakedly acquisitive profit motive. I think it's going to start a productive debate.

    chiaroscuro | 31 Jul '07, 01:02 | X
  • yeah

but its great for watching tv, especially stuff that we dont get over here or stuff that you missed and would never get to see and it means more people get to see it and appreciate it and talk about it and make it more popular which is what the makers want to happen.

In america most stations are starting to broadcast all their shows on the internet anyway in high quality so these sites like tv links will probably become redundant. Soon enough all tv channels will probably stream live on the internet.

Movies are different though as the visuals are more important, i never watch movies on there.

    sharp_yet_blunt | 31 Jul '07, 01:25 | X
  • i don't really use it

i like a reasonable level of quality when i watch stuff, so i normally download torrents for films and tv programs. have i missed the point?

    jp100 | 31 Jul '07, 01:29 | X
    • i always torrent stuff aswell

i thinks this makes us better than people who stream, its shows our appreciation for the artform.

      sharp_yet_blunt @jp100 | 31 Jul '07, 01:34 | X
      • not enough appreciation to pay money of course

        but appreciation none the less

        jp100 @sharp_yet_blunt | 31 Jul '07, 01:39 | X
        • you cant put a price

          on appreciation

  • "Am I one of few remaining people"

    no, you're not.

  • i pay my tv licence

    i don't see the problem

    darkpigeon | 31 Jul '07, 10:51 | X
    • but re. quality

there is going to be a divergence between hi def big screen, and low fi downloadable stuff that is mobile compatible. me, i'm more of a content that a sound/visual person

      darkpigeon @darkpigeon | 31 Jul '07, 10:52 | X
  • it gave me Heroes

that is the end of the discussion
