cos i had a dream a few nights ago that russia had launched a nuke and it was going to hit in 3 hours. Everyone was running around and i felt really scared and it was cool
racing to a shelter?
is such a nice guy...
that's because of that joke that he's always angry !
i can say that modern russia is defintely slipping back into being a horrible place lead by a horrible man
why else would they keep doing it!
they should choose nice democrat people like us french...
because with the push of a button a cold war can become a hot war very quickly. Very hot!
you don't know it's a cold war until it's over. To say it's a cold war at the beginning kind of defeats the point.
is russia really much of a military threat these days? my impression was that their army is a) not well equipped, b) rarely paid and c) mostly tied up in the Caucauses.
he's just sabre rattling, surely?
but at the same time, if you rattle your sabre too much, you're going to get in a fight.
when you take into account who he's rattling his sabre at. Bush isn't afraid of going to war.
In saying that, I think Bush has given US/Russian relations a good go. Inviting Putin on holiday was a move that would have been unthinkable 20 years ago.
Unpleasant all the same though.
...were always a bit overplayed.
Yes, on paper they had considerably more tanks than NATO.
But, ours all worked, had plentiful spares/ammo and were crewed by motivated professional soldiers.
Lame sabre rattling from a country lead by a sad bunch of 80s throwbacks.
Okay, weirdest fucking thing...my previous post was complete and then some of the letters literally disappeared AFTER I had succesfully posted.
I blame the Russians.
but at the end of it is a really big bomb.
haha!! I stole that from Dennis Miller. He was justifying being in Iraq, but still... I couldn't wait for an Iraq thread to plagerize the line.
Maybe James Bond will be able to save the world again instead of going after boring old drug dealers.
rumour has it that in the next movie he infiltrates a North London delicatessen which is selling regular bread as organic with a considerable mark-up on the price!
There's a dramatic showdown at the end in a fairtrade coffee shop where the lead henchman suggests that Bond doesn't care about his carbon footprint, leading to a dramatic low speed chase sequence in a lighly armoured Toyota Prius.
as the waitress/damsel-in-distress, no doubt. Meh!
bond would be driving a hybrid?
have a model which runs on seaweed?
will not do anything.
The Russians won't waste a nuke on Portsmouth, for one thing there would be no way of telling whether destruction had been achieved!
naval base and nuclear subs etc. id be defensive about portsmouth, but you're all right, it's really shit.
Besides, most of the ships based at Portsmouth are mothballed.
is NOT gonna nuke anyone.
I can't believe people are acting like they are any kind of threat to the West.
...but, there is certainly scope for a lower intensity confrontation.
I'd say any kind of armed conflict witb Russia was so unlikely as to be not worth considering.
to site major radar tracking facilities and missile silos in former Warsaw Pact member states as part of the US missile defence shield.
Alternatively over Russia's stranglehold over vast quantities of natural resources that Europe relies on.
What do you base your apparent certainty that conflict is impossible on?
neither side would stand to gain anything by it.
NATO is no threat to Russia, because NATO has no reason to fight Russia.
And Russia is hardly gonna want to fight some of the countries on whom it depends on selling it's natural resources.
Trust me. Not gonna happen.
...as evidenced by Vladimir Putin's reaction to it in which very aggressive threats were made, including the retargetting of Russian missiles (although in all likelihood they're targetting us already, as we are them).
Russia cancelled their arms treaty with NATO today.
Unless you have some seriously high level insight into international relations, how can you possibly make that assumption?
it's nothing more than posturing!
Russia is not gonna attack the west.
The Russians have a great deal of pride and that could mean the sort of posturing that can lead to "my dick is bigger than your dick". And on the scale of things, the Russians are only slightly more predictable than Arabs.
The missile shield thing is stupid unless they've come up with something a whole lot better than those worthless Patriot missiles.
are VERY predictable.
It has to be said that on balance they were as least as sane in their decision making during the Cold War as the U.S. was.
The Cold War never turned into a real war, largely because both sides realised that a war between them would probably gain nothing.
The same answer any present/future Russian government would see.
The Russians are being more assertive than they have been in the last 15 years. There is nothing strange about this, they were very weak in the 1990's. The current moves made by Putin are merely him moving Russia back to a position of importance. Nothing more
But you're right, on the whole. I poorly worded my thoughts there. What I meant to say is that they like the role of "bully".
I'm reminded of that line out of Hunt for Red October: "The Russians don't take a dump with a 5 year plan, son."
the most deranged and unpredictable foreign policy strategies of the past century!
Whilst full scale nuclear warfare was avoided you neglect to mention the wide array of proxy wars that were fought between the two sides.
actions were AS LEAST as dangerous.
Obviously there were proxy wars etc, but for much of the Cold War, actual war was pretty far away.
After the CMC arguably the americans were responsible for the most dangerous periods during the early 80's.
We should have contracted out our assassin plots to MI6.
antagonised the Russians uneccasarily imo.
The Russians were VERY worried about the american intentions in this period.
Summer 1983 was possibly the most dangerous period in the Cold War.
I keep expecting to read the whole MX missile thing was a hoax to drive the Russians crazy - which it did - and broke trying to play catch-up.
Too bad it wasn't and his Trickle Down theory was really just that.
Economics finished the cold war, which isn't something Reagan was really responsible for.
I don't really rate Reagan as a good president.
on what you regard as a good president really.
Clinton's presidency co-incided with a huge rise in American prosperity, but i'd regard him as one of the weaker presidents.
Nixon was obviously a crook but had many outstanding achievements.
Is my favorite historical quote ever.
was from the Union General in the Civil War mocking his troops hiding from the confederates, in their trenches by saying
"They couldn't hit an Elephant at this distance"
he was shot seconds later by a Confederate Sniper
into Putin on Thursday I'll give him a good slap in the chops. Last time I was in Moscow he drove past me so the odds of this happening are pretty high. If Berkshire gets nuclearized as a result then sorry.
how Washington DC and Moscow are about the only two major cities in the world laid out in circles?
I think n- ...yeah, probably.
