Liverpool just secured 2nd place next season.
Are going to have a bad season.
but they will still finish 2nd. Liverpool 3rd, spurs 4th.
I think they will be scrapping for a UEFA spot rather than a champions league spot (pending whoever else they buy up-front, or if Eduardo turns out to be immortal)
The atmosphere at Chelsea seems to stink, but they could always just whip out 30 million for Eto'o and totally change everything before the season starts.
Liverpools transfers just seem right this year though. Agger has come of age, I can see that Crouch and Kuyt could both be top drawer foils to torres,,, this seasons their best chance to really challenge for years.
even though it pains me to say it. Basically I struggle to see how they can compete next year with the top 3. Especially when Spurs are improving and strenghening there squad so much.
also a couple of players needed. Lol@Benitez comments about Bellamy.
every time something bad happens to bellamy.
which is excellent value I think. He's world class and just 23.
it makes man utds signings of Anderson and Nani seem stupid.
but liverpool still need to provide him with the service, which means buying some decent wingers, if they dont do that they wont be challenging for anything.
he's not a prolific goalscorer, he's been heavily criticised for being unable to form a partnership with anyone, and Liverpool still haven't resolved their service problem.
he could well prove me wrong, but i really doubt it.
He is prolific he just didn't have a decent strike partner last season :O
Torres has never been prolific. His best ever is 19 in a season, with 6 being pens.
Is fair enough.
That's almost identical to Wayne Rooneys strike rate for england.
Far inferior to chrouchygoals though.
If Benitez has blown his whole budget on Torres then Liverpool are fucked. Bent, Anelka, Klose or Toni would of been cheaper and probably scored as many goals. Plus, they still need a couple of decent wide players. Unless they win the league, £26mio is gonna look like a massive waste of money
Garcia went the other way for like £3.5 or something.
Ciise leaving for around £5 million.
Sinama-Pongolle has gone for £2.7.
Bellamy will go for anything between £8-10.
and we are apparently getting £5 for Gonzales :S
That is at least 24.2 million... I doubt Benitez has blown the whole budget on Torres.
breadfan!! exactly what i have been saying in work today to the jealous man utd fans...who have also been harping on about torres scoring a lot of pens. If gary liniker or alan shearer hadnt have taken penalties then they would have had a hell of a lot less career goals....and if Ian Rush HAD taken pens who would have had a ridiculous record (even though his record stands alone anyway)
misses about half his pens anyway.
That's fine for a striker so long as your friend up front is doing the same and you have two midfielders chipping in too.
Gerrard is one, but they need the other. Kewell is due a good season, but I fear he may now be a lots cause.
And if the going rate for Mark Gonzales is £5 then he's really gone downhill :-D
Not that he's worth it or anything.
had a better La Liga and International scoring record then Torres, and he was shit.
You can expect 10-15 goals a season, reports of him being the new messiah though are way off the mark.
Morientes was awesome before and after Liverpool. It's all about how well you fit, and Torres is just the kind of player I can see combining well with Crouch or Kuyt, for all the reasons that Morientes wasn't.
But, yes, they either need new wingers or the Harry Kewell of 2000.
Perhaps too similar.
I think he's a poacher at heart.
Because his goal record in Holland was ludicrous. A goal every 132 mins assuming he played every minute of every appearance, which he won't have.
I think they'll be okay together.
Torres spends more time threatening the other goal than Kuyt, who runs around doing a lot of work further back, which isn't what you want for your supposed main striker. Your #10 should do that, your #9 should be scoring. Liverpools problem is the lack of a real good #9 since Fowler.
Crouch would be my preferred partner though.
He's a hard worker though and does a lot of runningand tracking back and stuff, a bit like Kuyt.
I just fail to see where Kuyts real goal threat comes from at all. Even when he scores he never looks like he's about to.
the above is a comment from someone that knows nothing about football
'torres is too similar to kuyt'
the above is someone who knows even less
wait and see!!
but I don't expect fireworks.
And we can all agree that Morientes's time at Liverpool wasn't sucessful.
But he is far from shit.
I said he "was shit", He had a good season last season.
And yes, I agree, he was and he did.
just couldnt adapt to the premiership. too quick for him i think but they guy has nothing to prove, great centre forward. At least with him it didnt ever look like he wasnt trying. cisse on the other hand was just lazy and if nando had the pace he had, he would have been cracking in the prem
he's a striker who's built his reputation on who he's playing with. when he's they key guy up front he disappears.
does it take to change a lightbulb?
At least six if you're a scouser
reckon that Liverpool have massively overpaid for Torres. But we'll see.
But I can't really see Liverpool being much different from this year - numbingly boring to watch and a third or fourth place league finish, miles behind the top two.
when it was thought to be 26 million... Obviously they don't think he is a waste of money.
reading some of the liverpool forums. the dippers seem to be fucked off they've only got torres in the wake of the tevez news.
I like the idea we'll be playing something inbetween Roma's "no striker" system and old Dutch style total football next season to an extent. After all, we could comfotably have an attacking 5 where all the players can play anywhere in the attacking third, and rotate effectively, Evra and Neville giving even more width with Hargreaves able to hold, and still have Nani, Anderson and (hopefully, if we don't do anything daft) Rossi to come from the bench, who are equally as flexible.
That's really rather scary.
I think Torres will get 20 goals max in all competitions next season. As has been said widely on here, Liverpool really need a couple of top class wide men to service the strikers. They're overloaded with central midfielders and 10-15 goal a season front men. I don't think they've got enough at the moment to challenge United or Chelsea.
I also think that a lot of people are writing Arsenal off a little to early. OK so Henry's gone, but Eduardo looks a good signing. He may take a while to get fit, but if they get Van Persie fit for the start of the season, I still think they'll be top 4.
it amazes me how many people think Torres will be amazing for liverpool. Does anyone actually watch spanish football? 15 at most next season.
As for Arsenal, I'm not going to re-iterate things I say time and time again. Just watch next season. If people on here actually watch football.
Christ almighty. We finished 4th (on goal difference) last season, thats a huge gap to Liverpool.
But yeah, Torres innit, I heard he was well good. Should get Liverpool challenging, even though they haven't got any decent wide men at all.
Kewell: does he play?
Riise: Left back
as Giggs, Ronaldo, Robben, Joe Cole etc.
I was struggling to think of a top drawer Arsenal winger. They're overloaded with central and attacking midfielders as well.
over Pennant and Kewell/Gonzales any day.
Plus I reckon Gerrard will be playing on the right a lot next season. Kewell can be scary when he is fit... I doubt that will happen though, Gonzales is going to leave and Rafa said in the press conference yesterday that Liverpool are looking for new wingers :O
Liverpool did however just sack off the last few games because they were already guaranteed 4th place at least...
without the injuries Arsenal would've been pushing for at least 2nd last season, without a doubt. it was only a lack of goals that was the problem, really. there wasn't a game that went by that wasn't thoroughly lamentable. if Eduardo works out and Van Persie can play more there's no reason why we can't challenge for the title.
down to the fact that our front pair were injured for more than half the season. Chelsea without Drogba or Man Utd without Rooney & Ronaldo would look a pretty different prospect, don't you think?
i think the fact no one expects anything will work in our favour, but it is football.
Arsenal will be the dark horses this season. Which is ridiculous when you think of how good we are.
why thank you Glen.
that I am really really excited about fantasy football starting tomorrow?
