are there other cities / towns with a "The"?
why so special?
is 'The State of the Vatican City'
no doubting that one.
Well its called Den Haag in Dutch, so I guess the rest of the world just has to use the literal translation - The Hague.
Thats not much of an answer really. And its almost certainly not the one you were looking for.
Maybe Hague/Haag means something, i.e. Centre, so its called The Centre?
which I always find a bit weird.
'The Ukraine' in front of a Ukranian, they would likely stab you to death. I remember hearing on tele recently that they don't like it.
I'd like it if I came from The England, it would make me feel special.
It'd also be better if I was called The James.
And yeah, I really don't get it.
I drove through it once. Pretty houses.
Its the political capital of Holland
I'm ridiculously embarassed. sorry.
number of times people confuse Holland and Denmark in conversation really amazes me. Tell people you are from Denmark, they will later on refer to you as Dutch...
if you like it so much
I can't believe I wrote that...
named 'Des Graven Hage' or 'The Count's Hedge' after William II, Count of Holland began construction of a castle in a forest. How the name changed, I don't know.
Bit crap really isn't it. It's like calling London 'The River'.
although Porto in portgual just means 'The Port'. I suppose you could call edinburgh 'The Castle'. Endless fun, erm...
I think some Welsh places are called "The xxxxxxxxx" in Welsh
isnt it? 'The Hedge', not as good as living in Leghorn...
with a Le, La or Les prefix
