is a fascinating topic and can look really smart if done properly. There's lots of rules, though and if you cut corners you are guaranteed to look a bit odd.

Well they aren't. They are shoes for men. They are related to the standard slippers worn by all men during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

They are the traditional black tie shoe. If 'man baby' associations are foremost in your mind, then I guess you'll just have to get hold of some patent oxfords... But they are rather shiny, so you might want to just wear your work shoes...

You should have more confidence in yerself! It's better to get it right than to cut corners. You'll always look more stylish. You really can't go wrong - black tie is so strict that you just follow the instructions and you can't fail to become instantly smart and elegant!
it's only when people start trying to inject their own personalities into things that it gets messy (see fancy waistcoats, ties, white bow ties, white shoes etc etc).
