I am basically unemployable for any job of worth
Is the decision that I've come to after seriously searching for jobs for a few months now.
All I ask is that I find something that is 9-5, Monday to Friday and won't make me feel 100% like killing myself when I get home.
But all jobs that fulfil this criteria are beyond me by the looks of things.
Any advice on finding an alright job would be much appreciated.
I'm angry :(

big issue
its a magazine, a bit like bunty but written by tramps
Can we not joke please?
I'm quite pissed off and I really don't want these feelings to be transferred to people that are actually really nice :(
I felt like this after 6 months
of being jobless last year. Not a lot to say really except keep plugging away and summat'll turn up...
Have you given your CV to agencies?
oops, sorry mate :-(
me apowogise. *puppy dog eyes*
i dont know, i guess until you find something you really want to do, try looking for a shop job thats half way bearable? there are some. the thing is to be lucky and find a place with people you can get on with, which is more important than the job in a lot of retail thingies...
thats how i stomached 5 years of weekends in a curtain shop.
Shop job =
working weekends.
Not only would I like not to work weekends so I can travel to Edinburgh and see Cat reasonably regularly, but I've done the whole weekend (and evening) working thing and it nearly drove me crazy because of the limited chance to have a social life.
Am I just being to picky?
I'm sure there'll be shop jobs that don't require you for weekends.
At the cinema where I work the shifts are different every week. I saw when I can work and how many shifts I want and they sort it. It's really flexable 'cos if you change you're mind, you can swap shifts with other people. I imagine there are a few places that work in a similar way.
curtain shop?
so thats where your hair inspiration comes from.
you're
on the list
up for a high school massacre?
i'm off in about 16 minutes
I'll tell you who'll be up for that

looks like someone on my livejournal
I reckon you should be
applying for an office position as a temp. You'll need minimal experience beyond 'How to turn a computer on' and 'How to make a cuppa', and it'll be a start in the door. Get thee to a temp agency.
Temp:
I'd really need to move back to Leeds.
However, I can't get a rented house on temping because it'll only be for a limited period and I won't be able to guarantee I'll be able to pay the rent for the full contract.
:'(
Hmmm...
Can you get a pub job in Leeds over the summer months to supplement the wages for those times that you may be out of work?
Okay, here's a bit of a plan
I'll call some Leeds agencies on Monday (I'm going away tomorrow) and tell them my position and see what they can offer me.
Hopefully something will come of that.
I'm just fed up of applying for jobs that I know I can do (and do well) and not even getting an interview for it.
:(
That can be bloody irritating, you're right
But letting it get to you isn't going to help any situation. You just have to keep plugging away.
Call the agencies, and see what's happening. Someone out there will be able to offer you something, that's a fact. And it's a start, and you can work from there.
If not, then you can come and live with me and shave my carpet, or something.
If that's not a euphemism...
then I'm an attractive blonde girl with fake tits.
That's what those jpegs you sent me indicated
"I can't get a rented house on temping"
hmm.
i did.
it's a good starting point, bamos
yes.
yeh
this IS a good idea. lots of friends do this and its good experience for your CV
photographer
all you have to do is own a camera
dude
I very much doubt you're unemployable, I expect you've just had very bad luck.
I do temp work in the uni holidays and basically the only things the average agency want is that you've got A-Levels, can type well, and are a reasonably pleasant person to work with. All of which apply to you. Have you tried agencies and stuff? Reed are the one I'm registered with and they're pretty good I find.
Good luck!
reed
are indeed good
they got me
my current job. I was worth £3750 apparently.
Can I buy shares in you?
Absolutely
It's a bit of a risk though - the price of shares can go down as well as up.
Well...
I'm only looking for a small investment at first, if my small investment does well then perhaps I'll start investing more.
I'll give you £10 for 1% of your life and all your future earnings. Deal?
Agencies are good
But everyone (including me) who has a cushy job has got it through pure fluke and nothing else. FACT
I think maybe
you should get a pub/restaurant job in Leeds, and supplement that with temping. That means you'll be there, and can definitely pay rent and stuff, then you can look for a proper job while you're there.
i had this
then got a few jobs by complete fucking luck.
so just wait.
itl all be fine
or start a business innit
I'm looking for a summer job
and getting nowhere :(
bf
9-5 jobs, frankly are either for losers or for capitalist scum who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes. Think about what you like to do and formulate a plan as to how to achieve that.
Photography is a good one. Iknow a few long term losers who have suddenly become successful at thirty+
Thing is
At the moment I need money to do the things I want to do, which will put me in a frame of mind in which I can actually work out what I'm going to do in the long-term.
I think a period of temping and sleeping on friends' sofas may beckon...
yeah! do that
(also come and live in our soon to be spare room kthxbye)
So he can, but I'm not allowed?
You can DO ONE.
I do smell
marginally better than you.
And I don't sexually harass her flatmates...
Both good points
I concede defeat. I'm a terrible flatmate.
Anyone wanna live with an alcoholic fat lad with wandering hands?
PM me please.
seriously
im feeeling wistful at the thought
you don't want to live with us
I thought you were a loyal Sarf Lahdahhnner?
a sweeping generalisation there, grockle
tsk
bf
sometimes a sweeping generalisation helps make a point...obviously that's not 100% truth.
Personally I have no desire to work nine til five, with two or three weeks holiday a year, until I'm too old to do anything useful with my spare time
it's ok.
i'm a fan of sweeping generalisations, personally.
:)
WHERE ARE OUR BACKPACKERS, YOU BASTARD?!
ha ha ha haha
Good question. Somewhere out the back of Burke, I'd say.
Nah
9-5 jobs are for those who have spent months and years doing jobs with other working hours, and got fucking irritated by not being able to meet up with friends when they want, or missing out on stuff all the time. Not to mention missing Soccer Saturday or The Bill.
indeed
if all your friends do a 9-5 job, it would be lonely not doing one. It's actually what I want to do, I couldn't imagine anything worse than having to work from home, on my own timescale. It'd be like being a student again!
Not to mention missing The Bill
so doing photographs for capitalist scum is better is it?
grockle 'ftw'
What have you
tried for?
Having seen his application forms:
Deputy PM
A position on the panel of Loose Women
A scale model of Worksop.
Maybe
he should try and be a scale model of a town less salubrious than Worksop
You can get those models of Worksop...
at Games Worksop. He should try a new town.
Haha
He'd be James Worksop!!!! JAMES WORKSOP!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!
My joke was better.
You just took it down a few pegs.
You are the comedy washing line.
Upon which
I allow you to air your freshly laundered bloomers.
:D
8/10
Mostly
general admin-type stuff.
I don't really have any skills to speak of....
sounds terribly sensible
but when i was having trouble getting job that didn't involve working weekends etc then taking free courses to rpove you can type and you aren't a moron can be helpful...learn direct do some free computer stuff...never actually used them as i decided to do something else after doing the courses...but hey :o)
also get someone else to read your cv/ application and point out where you could sell yourself better...if you haven't already...times and guardian have some useful job hunting websites
Here's my advice:
Think Johnny Borrell. Bluster forward full steam ahead - and even without the talent and credentials - you'll find yourself on the cover of the NME.
If you're going for a retail type job, put on a suit that looks better than the other employees, ask to turn in you application to the hiring manager, shake his hand, smile a 100watt smile, look him in the eye, give the guy the impression you're the dude he wants his daughter to date.
If you're going for a "resume" type job, then use the spaghetti against the wall approach. Fax a hundred resumes. Someone will call you back, guaranteed.
Every one on this DiS board, including you commander!, is highly employable.
I've been living on friend's
sofas for ages now and it's really not that bad.
A great way to spend evenings with a variety of friends! ha ha
I went to a temp agency and they got me a job at amex.
Now i'm full time at amex and i'm on 15 grand a year which is good considering i don't pay rent.
Temp agencies don't always just get you dud jobs so i'd definitely give it a go!
I understand your frustration...
I graduate next month and want to swap my part-time job for something grown-up and proper but 3 months of searching and applying hasn't led anywhere.
It's so hard to know what people want...tick the boxes, do the person specification, have relevant qualifications and experience and the still want your blood.
Good luck with the hunt...if you find somewhere good see if they want me too!
When i was in this state
I went to Spain, thanks to the British Council. Maybe a change of scene would be good? If you get a decent bar job or tutoring job or something, you could rent a place for sure, maybe in Leeds or Edin. AND have time to consider your longer term options.
A few chats with people who know you best can help narrow down your options, too and throw up some ideas you may not have considered. Thanks to my sister's words of wisdom I'm now doing more study to get the job i really want. I was seriously considering working my way up in the wine trade too...so always consider that, as the chances are you won't get your dream job straight away.
um, long post alert!
If you're looking to move to Leeds
The Uni has loads of admin jobs going all the time. Weekends and bank holidays off, you also get the Tuesday after the bank holiday off as uni staff are spoilt! The place I've just got a job with are pretty big and looking for admin staff too if you want me to give you their details?
Good luck!
Yes please
If you could PM me that'd be great :)
Thank you :) :) :)
I've also been applying for loads of stuff with the uni, with varying degrees of unsuccess...
just keep at it
make a list of jobs then scribble out what you could/couldn't do
I've got an interview to be a dental nurse tomorrow, there going to pay for my training and shit :)
never thought of doing anything like that, but its mon-fri 9-5ish, and better than sitting in a call center
Good luck man
Yep, I've been there and done the call centre stuff, really don't want to do that again.
What experience do you have to have to become a dental nurse?
NOne
just three GCSE's/standard grades. thats for a trainee dental nurse anyway, but most dental nurse positions are trainee. i've found three in the last week. not great pay but after your qualified (for Free!) you start racking it in, plus you can then go on and do other dentisty things without being a dentist, result. found mine on gumtree and jobcenterplus
<deep breath>
riiiight. What you need to do is this: register with as many agencies in Leeds as you can. Go for the biggest ones too; Reed, Adecco etc. If they want you to go in and do tests, do them - it won't be wasting your time. Just set them all up over a few days so you can hop from one t'other.
Then call them. At least a couple of times a week. 'Have you got any new work suitable for me'. Get the name of the person you speak to at each agency every time you do this, and then the next time - no more than two or three days later, call THAT same person again and don't speak to anyone else if you can possibly avoid it. And then again, and again. The chances are, if your surname doesn't begin with A, B or C, you're further down the list than many others, so if you’re not oozing with office qualifications and experience, they’ll get to someone else first. You need to be in the subconscious of many agents as ‘that nice boy who seems to call every two or three days that I can never seem to find anything for’, because they’ll WANT to help you and/or get you off their back.
Also, many of the big agencies can give you free training in excel, word, powerpoint, office, etc. I know my agency can give me an online learning facility so that I can do it from home. If not, some will let you sit in their offices and do the training. Then if you tested at 60% advanced knowledge in word when you first registered, and you’re now getting 97% after your training, make sure you let all of the agencies know that your scoring has improved. This will make a MASSIVE difference. Keep a copy of the printed out test results to prove to them by fax (or preferably scan and email). If not, you may have to physically then go back again to each of them and do their tests in person, which isn’t really a hassle – they pretty much all use the same software so you’re unlikely to flunk it.
Also, when you speak to them, just ask if they have anything going in their office too. They may just need phone cover for a few days, and it gets your foot in the door/gets you liked by them.
So yeah – get yerself trained up well and keep calling them. It’s a numbers game, that’s all. Good luck xxx
what
do you actually want to do as a job? Ultimately. This would be a good start.
"something that is 9-5, Monday to Friday and won't make me feel 100% like killing myself"
Not possible.
I would imagine
that the fact you haven't had a job for a few months is quite an off-putting factor for potential employers. You should really take the first job you can thats remotely bearable and keep job hunting. Use the job you then have to demonstrate your abilities in subsequent interviews by identifying improvements that you would make etc. given the opportunity.
