and meeting people:
does anyone do this?
does it work?
and get chatting to the barman.
I've done this countless times.
If you like dogs, talk to the dog owner and pat said dog.
Generally a smile will work but sometimes in wierdy cold London, it can be difficult.
weekly/weakly. Just tut loudly at your newspaper. Or laugh at your book and catch someone's knowing eye.
They were late. Bastards. But luckily that Man United 7-1 match was on, so I just kept busy watching that.
I thought this thread was about meeting friends at the pub, but going on your own.
at least once a week with a book or a paper. i have never met anyone by doing this
you don't tut or chortle
seen me. i do both a hideous amount
and you neither tutted or chortled
why not sit at home and drink?
where I do, it's to avoid being there
damn fucking right it is
like a drink straight from work.
because beer tastes better in the pub.
because it's easier to read in the pub than in my house...
is a lot different to sitting in a pub and drinking.
that dog that is in your pic. i always make eyes at the boys with pups with them :)
my opening gambit is always "look at that bellend over there, tutting and chortling to himself"
But I avoid talking to others while I'm there.
get totally wastay at home, then stuble intot the pub, try it on with the barmaid and follow anyone giving out flyers to the club.
usually to watch football, but also to read newspapers and try and find friends. I never do.
with a book to read and my mp3 player, just in case pervy men happen to start talking to me- 'can't hear you mate'.
for exactly the same reason, plus I'm always at least one and a half hours early for meeting anyone
a bit literal?
it's usual that they say 'love' that's horrible. *shudders*
to go out don't you.
when i start hating life.
really, really need to get out
also: i hate myself rather than hating life, ive decided
you'll feel much better....
wheres good to walk at night in london?
anywhere in zone 2 is lovely
i can't even pull a picture on the internet :(
I'm gonna give it a last ditch attempt.
but she terrifies me
i don't meet people.
and see what happens
BET YALL WANTED TO KNOW THAT
If it's near Highgate then walk there
not the heath though-bumdanger!
the other day so I sat and listened to my iPod and giggled at the terrible subtitles on Sky News.
'Johnny knocks bill'
who has actually made a friend from going to the pub alone, surely you might get talking to someone but you'll always be the loner guy in the pub to them.
...due to being an old man magnet. They always talk to me, don't know why as it doesn't happen with any other demographic.
gives me an idea. Go to pubs and rescue people from drunk old men. You're bound to make friends doing that.
Girls: never done it.
Just random cool strangers to sit and chat too, yeah, really easy. I always try to make a point of getting a 'local' near my house when I move somewhere, and talking to the barmen and customers and stuff.
I love the pub culture.
While you're sitting in the corner of the pub mulling over your latest organic vegetable catalogue and muttering to yourself at the choice of music, I'm getting drunk in another corner and chatting to people, making life more pleasant for everyone.
I ended up chatting to a guy called Alistair who worked for 4AD, and we were talking about indie 'back in the day' and Throwing Muses and The Breeders and stuff.
It was an ace conversation.
It's pretty easy to get chatting to barfly gent types if you want to. Bar stool, universal topic (football/politics/issue of the day e.g. thames whale) and you're away. I rarely do this, even though old barfly dudes are sometimes quite interesting.
Order a pint
Play with my phone
I hate walking into a pub on my own when I know that my friends are inside. Or waiting on my own when I know they're on their way.
I think it's a man thing, going for a pint on your own...maybe as my Dad does it a lot but my Mum never...
I normally play a gambly machine if I am forced to be in a pub alone
No-one thinks this. Haha! Look at old Billy No Mates over there, in a pub with a drink!!!!!
Not a problemo.
walking into a pub alone gives me the same feeling as walking past a gang of teenagers on a shopping parade.
by doing this.
...but then remember that, if I were to get chatty with a group of friendly bystanders, I will always deter them when I laugh at the wrong points in conversation.
and it's a choice between that or sit on my own in a hotel room.
The last time I did it was in Bath. I got chatting to a lad, he invited me over with his group of mates and then I got chatting to a girl in their group. After a while she turned and said to me over the din of the music "Are you going back to mine?". I'd only been chatting with her for 15 minutes or so but I admired her forwardness and said that i'd love to. A while later we left and walked back to her house. Or at least that's what I thought we were doing. We stopped outside a club and she turned to me and said "Here we are then" and walked towards the door. I looked up at the sign outside and the place was called Back To Mine. I was absolutely crestfallen! How many brothers have been caught out by that one?
