                      meths @sadpunk | 1 May '07, 13:50 | X
            • Yeah kinda...but then 'GuitarGeek' wouldn't exist if people didn't care

I used to care more about this stuff when I was starting out and wanted to know how they got the sounds they did and stuff.

              TheoGB | 1 May '07, 13:44 | X
              • me too

but it's better just to get what you can out of what you can afford.

                sadpunk @TheoGB | 1 May '07, 13:46 | X
                • The cost argument is different to the equipment thing

I totally agree that if you're talking about 'pub' bands then the more expensive and poncy the equipment, generally the worse the band.

But then there are plenty of bands out there using expensive (but admittedly worn-looking) equipment that sound great.

Anyway, you don't need to buy the exact same pedal as your favourite guitarist to emulate the sort of sounds they're getting...but it's a start to know what they're using.

                  TheoGB @sadpunk | 1 May '07, 13:53 | X
                  • I agree with you completely

what I was saying was just it's often better to experiment yourself and not worry about sounding like records that have cost a fortune.

                    sadpunk @TheoGB | 1 May '07, 14:09 | X
                    • Well, very true

                      :D

                      TheoGB @sadpunk | 1 May '07, 14:16 | X
            • Bands that list their equipment = bad

Except Sonic Youth. They need their gearography just to remind them what they've got.

Bands with good equipment = either rich or care about how they sound

              timhulio | 1 May '07, 13:45 | X
            • I have a guitar.

              It's red.

If I strum it, it makes noise. If I plug it in and strum it, it makes louder noise.

This is the precise extent of my knowledge of the musical equipment which I use.

                • it's not the 90s anymore!

                  sadpunk @timhulio | 1 May '07, 14:16 | X
                • I manage to be proud of it!

Clearly I joke a little - I do know a bit more than that but I really don't know too much about music equipment and it's certainly never been a problem for me.

It depends what kind of music you make, of course (and it certainly helps that I mostly play an acoustic guitar so don't need to give thought to effects) but I genuinely don't think my songs would be better for more technical knowledge about equipment.

I do think sometimes it's easy to get blinded by the science of it all and rely on effects, equipment & technique at the expense of actual songs.*

*Obviously not in all cases and I can of course think of several bands and musicians who've merged good song-writing with good technical playing and good knowledge of effects. I can think of several more who don't.

i want to know how their guitars make that 'wooshing' noise so i can do it myself.
