Without a doubt the best. Your heart just goes out to him in his final redeeming moments.
Sgt Apone in Aliens.
Had potential to be one of THE great characters
If I were going for a "hero" character it would probably have to be Randall McMurphy, Rick Blaine or some such. "Villains" I'd probably choose Noah Cross or Mrs Robinson.
Although the best characters are often a bit of both aren't they? Charles Foster Kane, Michael Corleone, Scottie Ferguson, etc.
Anyway, to answer the original question: Carl Spackler in Caddyshack.
its kind of Thompson, but not.
Bill Murrey's character in Groundhog Day.
The Doc from Back To The Future.
I also like Sigmund Freud and Napoleon from Bill & Ted's excellent adventure.
the chesire cat from alice in Wonderland.

Nobody rating pulp fiction's characters?
Topher Grace - he's a bit shit.
Keanu Reeves is good in Thumbsucker.
Gordon Gecko - wall street - evil evil capitalist.
Its the interplay and the plot and the feel of the film. I still think his dialogue is so crap. Just too much swearing, really.
The worst character is the bride in Kill Bill and Lucy Lui - Just rubbish.
Its like watching tourettes patients. I can hack language but seriously there's times during tarantino films where you wince because you can't believe he worked swearing into that sentence.
I do really like his films though. Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown are my favourites.
Skyla - Good Will Hunting - i literally love minnie driver as her
Margot - Royal Tenabaums
chaz - Royal Tenabaums
that medic who dies (played by the guy whos pheobes bro in friends) - saving private ryan
Marty - back to the future
renton - trainspotting
Sully (Paul Newman)- Nobodys Fool
Travis (Harry Dean Stanton)- Paris Texas
Kowalski (Barry Newman) - Vanishing Point
yeah it was a toss up between the two but sickboy is a little too arrogant for my liking plus his suit jacket annoys me
tarantino's dialogue is what made him so idolised. he didnt just use dialogue to move the plot along but created something which was believable, which is what made his films stand out, like the start of reservoir dogs and the bit in pulp fiction where there on their way to the apartment talking about big macs. Yeah theres a lot of swearing but i imagine the characters like the ones in his films would swear a hell of a lot.
