would you be surprised.... (iran-centric)

restlessboy [Edit] [Delete] 53 replies 15:08, 4 April '07

if you found out that those captured UK sailors actually were in Iranian waters all along AND had been sent there on purpose by Tony Blair & The Governments in order to spark an 'incident'? Perhaps so they could turn the heat up on Iran in order to increase public support for some kind of planned action against them.

I'm not asking 'do you think this is true?'. I'm saying if you found it was true, whether in a week or in 30 years time, would you actually be surprised?

I would be surprised that educated people thought the best way to "spark an incident" would be to sacrifice 15 of its own soldiers, which it already had evidence that Iran has been feeding weapons and other matériel to insurgents across the border.

    • ha yeah

I bet half the weapons they're feeding are british made.

      • why?

        JacobJones @restlessboy | 4 Apr '07, 15:51 | X
        • because

we sell a lot of weapons to countries who subsequently end up firing them at us.

I'm far more convinced by the Independent's assertion that the kidnap is a retaliation for the US attempting to kidnap senior members of Iran's intelligence service.

I was fairly hopeful at the start of this year that we could avoid war with Iran.

I'm fairly certain now that we will be fighting them in the next few years

    • I find it depressing that I don't

100% believe my own government about whether they were in Iranian waters or not.

but then to think that politics hasn't always been like this is foolish.

          • but why is that depressing?

it's like being dispirited by the fact that some individuals don't tell the truth all the time...

    • I wouldn't be surprised

if they were actually have found to have strayed into Iranian waters (particularly if the woman sailor was reading the map!) but I would be surprised if it was an attempt by Blair and Bush to force a diplomatic crisis and increase the heat on Iran. I really think this would be beyond even them.

            • this is stupid.

I find it utterly hateful how both sides are working themselves up into a nationalistic froth over something that should have been worked out uneventfully three days ago. I'm actually disgusted by how willing the media has been to go along with Blair's line on this.

            • Most ridiculous comment ever

Why do some seemingly intelligent people on here subscribe to such ridiculous conspiracy theories?

              glasso | 4 Apr '07, 16:21 | X
              • because sometimes power structures do organise schemes to decieve some party or other

In this case I do not believe there is a conspiracy, I believe that this is all down to a misdrawn line on a map due to a faulty biro

                  • you've misunderstood

what I'm trying to get at.

for the purposes of the question i'm asking you have to assume it is true.

what I'm really asking is do you think tony blair is capable of doing this?

would you have thought, four years ago, that he'd effectively lie about WMD to start a war? probably not but he did.

                    restlessboy @hollywood_freak | 4 Apr '07, 17:10 | X
                    • I'm also fairly sure

                      we weren't in Iranian waters.

This is a classic move by Iran effectively calling the West's bluff.

                    • I would be suprised yes.

If it was America, perhaps a different story, but Blair/Labour can do without having taking action in Iran, both in terms of public support and a stretched military.

                      • Plus, what everyone else has said

this has quite obviously been orchestrated in order to enhance Iran's power internationally in terms of diplomacy etc.
