As opposed to being forced:

http://www.dickensworld.co.uk/

Opened in my hometown - can't see how they will EVER make money back on it. Worst idea ever?

    • I don't think it's a bad idea

      but I'm not sure it's a £62 million idea.

      • it was probably

originally budgeted for £24.63, but then there were overruns...

      • My feeling too

We already have a Dickens Christmas festival, and Sweeps festival. There IS naff all in Chatham though...

        that did alarm me slightly.

But kids have PS3 now and the Dickensian craze must have withered after the release of 'Blur' surely?

    • It's for Americans

      Mr_JDTraynor | 29 Mar '07, 21:44 | X
      • But are Americans even

        that interested in Dickens?!

        bunique @Mr_JDTraynor | 29 Mar '07, 21:51 | X
        • No

a Dickensian of Blighty luv-a-duck, yes.

        • When Dickens was writing his books

they were serialised in newspapers before being published as books.

Crowds used to wait for the steamer from the UK when it arrived in New York to get the latest episode.

          • Apparently he was an even better orator than he was a writer

although I imagine you already knew that.

          • I used to have

a properly covered complete set of Dickens books on my bedroom shelf. Never read them, but they looked nice to visitors, or at least would have if I'd ever received any.

            simon_t @Mr_JDTraynor | 29 Mar '07, 22:42 | X
          • Yes but that was rather a while back

I absolutely love Dickens personally (wrote my dissertation on him) but not sure he's relevant enough to get people flocking to a "theme park"

            bunique @Mr_JDTraynor | 29 Mar '07, 22:45 | X
    • It'd probably be better

when it's a bit rundown and full of poorly maintained animatronics. That always gives attractions a certain 'edge'.
