Its really good: discuss
deconstructing anything can make it seem stupid.
Friends is amazing. Sure its not that intelligent, and the stories usually are pretty contrived, but its amazing. Perfect balance of comedy/"drama", characters all work well together, and its genuinly good to watch. 6-7/10 for wittiness aswell.
Yes, but it can also make you appreciate just how clever something is. It depends on the argument of the person doing the deconstructing. For instance, Charlie Brooker once wrote an analysis of the pre-title scenes in Friends which made clear just how clever the set-up was.
(Pigfoot's about to call me and/or Charlie Brooker a cunt. Watch.)
For me, Friends is usually really good when it gets on with being a comedy, and pretty crap when they get bogged down in romantic/sentimental storylines at the expense of the laughs. Especially all that Ross 'n' Rachel shit. Give me a break.
quite enjoyable. i like it, even after quite a few million viewings.
That's 3 episodes.
Some of it is genuinely brilliant. More often than not though, the characters are really irritating.
not annoy you a bit?
that, the oc and everybody loves raymond are some of the best american shows ever. ever ever.
Infact. all of those you mentioned are rubbish. Mine are incredible.
is the worst programme ever. Its not even as good as King of Queens
I don't think so, Tim...
its watchable, and i enjoy chandler sometimes, but watch it now, and see how character a will say something "funny" to character b, and they will insert a shot of character c finding it uproarous
then think about what was said
and you realise it wasnt that funny at all, and really fucking obvious, and generally patronising towards anybody who isnt really really boring.
and rachel is SUCH a cunt. she treats everyone like shit
although if judging it on its later episodes it would be close.it did have a period of good jokes and storylines, but eventually got mired into predictable one sided characterisation. and most of the characters are fucking cunts
fuk da h8rs
and i'll show you a liar
there wouldnt even be a flicker of a smirk on your face for a whole half an hour?
liking a program and finding passing amusement once in half an hour?
i still think most people dont watch it by choice but when do encounter it find it enjoyable
Better watch that satire! Any more edgy and itd'd be classed as a lethal weapon.
no-one's ever said that before.
that's been sadly lacking in the world since Bill Hicks died.
but I will be when they get those damn T-shirts printed
You go girl.
you can always trust on good old friends to be on when there's nothing else on the tele box.
people who say its shit are indie cunts : )
i should stop dissing what i am myself...
im listening to britney spears 'BOYS' you cant stop me dancin'
Easy to watch when you're bored. A couple of summers ago, my ex-housemate began watching the entire 10 series in chronological order. My other housemate asked her what she was planning to do when she finished. Her response?
"Watch them again :)"
be fair, it would take so long that you'd have forgotten what happened in the first ones by the end.
every joke was either "Could you BE any more (blank)?" or alternatively, an ordinary sentence with overemphasis, thus indicating a joke, but there would be no joke. If you actually think about whats being said its really not very funny.lol. I didnt mean that to sound patronising.
its all just manipulated so you think that there has been something funny said, but its normally just someone having done something slightly out of the ordinary
I just think the charactars work well together, they create a whole world in which each character has their own, clearly defined role, the humour carries this well, and it doesent try to be that clever whilst remaining entertaining.
because i know comedy relies on context, but friends TOTALLy relies on something thats not happening on screen at that particular moment. its subversively subtle to the point its actually convincing you its funny!
the characterisation is what makes it funny, and what has made it so popular.
two pints of lager
i spose its been running long enough to suggest people watch it
they keep making it
but its one of the greatest shows ever?
they create a whole world in which each character has their own, clearly defined role - why is this good? apart from to make a patronisingly numbing, pointless experience?
the humour is nothing
why is not being clever good?
its pure televisual mush. you just lie there and its rubbed in your face. its like shitting your pants and enjoying the warm squidginess
how its good mindless telly for when you dont want to think, and i liked it before i noticed the a) canned laughter/reaction shots when its completely not funny at all. situations that if you found yourself in in real life, you wouldnt even notice that it might be funny and b) COMPLETE cuntishness of rachel, and thus implausibility of any of them actually being friends, especially not such exclusive friends
the humour is not particualrly intelligent.
The programme as a whole is.
And something doesent have to be clever to be good.
even brainlessness can be clever
i actually did a lol at that simile.
clearly not the best programme on tv, but i enjoy watching friends while i eat dinner.
when you're concentrating on something else then
are the ones with Joey in. I <3 Joey. The rest are annoying. In order of annoyingness:
Ross, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Phoebe.
is the worst!
when people allocate everyone a friends character to be i always get Phoebe :(:(:(
in that case. so long as you're not constantly being 'kooky' in an exaggerated and contrived manner?
shut up you all suck bigtime
POINT AND LAUGH
is fucking atrocious. absolutely shite that wanted to be seinfeld, but failed miserably.
is as funny as a small child diagnosed with terminal cancer.
massive backlash in this thread. I really like Friends, it's reliably funny and feel-good and sometimes that's enough.
The clue's in the profile pic.
recognised her at rota! i should have guessed when she kept talking about that autobiographical film of hers/his!
characters in descending order.
That is The Correct Order. Challenge me at your peril!
they have all pretty much destroyed their own careers, apart from jennifer aniston who keeps out of my face.
suffered the Seinfeld Curse to an extent. I mean, how could anyone watch Matthew Perry play a character who isn't Chandler?
but that's just WRONG!
Joey is the only funny one.
third?! She's SO rubbish!
^ THIS is the correct order.
But I don't have one. They're all POOPY.
I'm confused now.
think I might have that. What are the symptoms?
Imagine how this thread makes me feel.
wholeheartedly. Its like Hula Hoops, you can just keep consuming more.
Probably the worst programme ever. Mind you this is probably down to overkill. I didn't like it at the time, but now I hate it and it's ugly E$, twenty-times a night slag-face.
one of the best sitcoms of the past 30 years - how anyone can deny that is, just, like, unbelievable!
Chandler is the best character from series 1 but then Joey steals that torch in the later ones.
watching Friends is the TV equivalent of listening to Keane or Coldplay. But I like it.
I see someone has invoked the Seinfeld Argument up there ^^^^
I first saw Friends and Seinfeld around the same time and didn't like either although I found Seinfeld marginally less likely to make me put my foot through the screen. The problem I had with Seinfeld was that at the end of the episode they thought it was a good idea to show a clip of 'our' Jerry doing his standup which was usually about as funny as Everybody Loves Raymond divided by infinity.
if it's 7:30 in the morning and you're just of bed before work.
