Fact-o-rama - 05/02/07

joeymahone [Edit] [Delete] 32 replies 10:49, 5 March '07

Back like cooked crack, y'all. Today's infonugget, with joint credit to Mr. D. Fawcett: The Canadian one-dollar coin has a picture of the common loon on one side, and is consequently referred to as a loonie. And the Canadian equivalent of Poundstretcher? "Loonie Shops". Those crazy Canucks.

since Theo claims to only read Fact-o-rama when Guntrip's at the helm, I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly call him a big momo, just to see if he responds. 5616!

    My fact for today is:

On this day in 1966, a BOAC Boeing crashed into the side of Mount Fuji.

    • 124 people died.

Bit of a grisly one, that.

I think it's good that Fact-o-rama has a serious side.

        • Speaking of funny names

today in 1973, the Symbionese Liberation Army leader Donald DeFreeze escaped from jail. Amazingly, that does appear to be his real name.

          • What

amazed me more was that apparently the man in charge of said jail was a Kenny Jailoperator

  • That's one of the better fact-o-ramas

    I usually only like Guntrip's

    yo_soy_welshmun | 5 Mar '07, 12:12 | X
    • :(

He had a part role in this one, which explains your approval.

      joeymahone @yo_soy_welshmun | 5 Mar '07, 12:15 | X
      • More references to Poundstretcher

that always brings the crowds in.

        yo_soy_welshmun @joeymahone | 5 Mar '07, 12:17 | X
        • I'll give you a related fact, then

There's a Poundstretcher on Kilburn High Road, but if you go further down there's a 99p shop and then a 98p shop. So bizarrely, the Poundstretcher marks the pricey end of town.

          joeymahone @yo_soy_welshmun | 5 Mar '07, 12:18 | X
          • you're being very unoriginal today

            5/10

            Brooner @joeymahone | 5 Mar '07, 12:21 | X
            • I promised that the loonie fact would be today's

but normal service will be resumed tomorrow. Even though Yo Soy won't like it.

D'you want some 5th of March facts? On This Day In History: Five Americans were killed by British troops in Boston, including a slave called Crispus Attucks, furthering the anti-British feeling which would eventually lead to the American Revolution (1770); Samuel Colt made the first revolver (1836); Italy began using airships for military purposes, the first country to do so (1912); Elvis appeared on telly for the first time (1955); and 35 pilgrims were crushed to death in Mecca during the Hajj (2001).

              Better?

              P.S. Your mum.

              joeymahone @Brooner | 5 Mar '07, 12:31 | X
          • See, I like that

I'd probably shop in the 99p one. You don't want to look too posh.

            yo_soy_welshmun @joeymahone | 5 Mar '07, 12:22 | X
            • A healthy balance.
