Why do they have caribean accents? I don't get it.
Flag of Barbados
I thought this was going be about whatever group of bellends have been plastering London with "Say No To Trident" posters.
We need a nice big draft. Thin out their numbers a bit.
in London on Saturday when that Anti-War/Trident/Everything protest was on.
and CND. I would have gone but i wa stuck here. Even i Thought the whole thing was a bit silly, as it had both 'no trident' and 'troops out' on its agenda.
I happened to be in Madchester for that last one. My crew went off marching, while I thought I was safe, chilling out in the main square reading the paper waiting for them to get it out of their system.
Hadn't even got to page 4 before some schizo lunatic comes and sits next to be and takes up the best part of the next 2 hours with batshit insane rambling about war, peace, his relationship with God, his relationship with his ex-girlfriend who - for some mysterious reason - will no longer grant him access to their young child.
I would've told him to fuck off, but he had one of those 'I Have A Knife' faces. And it would've let the Socialist Worker goons in, all of whom were giving me dirty looks for having the nerve to read the Times in broad daylight.
its just theyre obsessed with selling papers themselves, so they dont like the competition. You were unfortunate enough to meet one of the nutters.
theyre not. i dont like illiberal people.
I'm very old and wise. So trust me when I say the internet tough guy thing is very, very old, and very, very tedious.
You know where I am if you wish adhere to your own principles and respond to that post in a sensible and civil manner.
i didn't see it as an 'internet tough guy' thing because neither of us is new on here or actually dislikes the other one. hopefully.
Kiss From A Rose by Seal just came on my Winamp. It has soothed me.
I accept your apology and hope we can make out sometime.
I'd probably like you less if you weren't.
I have a problem with these ads. They seem outmoded, even the lilt ladies have pissed off and yet advertisers see fit to regress and promote this stereotypical idea of west indian people. I have no idea why they're using cod caribbean accents and (in the case of the black guy over exaggerated)
Trident in this country is an operation to investigate black on black crime especially people from the west indies. Maybe that's the connection.
Apart from this they are fucking annoying.
even if your family weren't west indian, you know.
that's why I said that aside they are extremely annoying ads.
it just sounded like when people go 'as a woman, i have a problem with... whatever' when they actually mean 'as a right-thinking person who is sufficiently aware of the issue, i have a problem with it'
in the sense that he personally is identified by the stereotyping of a cultural group he belongs to. people complaining about the stereotyping of other cultural groups is often very annoying.
Anyone with any social conscience should feel bad whenever any group suffers some form of malicious prejudice (racism, sexim etc). We are all part of society, and therefore all responsible to an extent.
but on some issues, people take offence on behalf of others without good reason. doing this is bad, because it just fuels the 'anti-pc' lobby.
even though they know its going on, just cos they havnt got the "authority" to be offended by it?
no. im saying that people who are personally members of social groups who are being stereotyped for whatever purpose are generally better placed to gauge whether said stereotyping is offensive or not.
isn't necessarily useful or real.
as examples (which sounds kinda daily mail, but whatever, there is accuracy): the whole thing about christmas lights/'winter festival'. questions over the acceptability of displaying st george's crosses in certain contexts. these are small examples, but theyre examples nonetheless.
and they have seemingly no reason to use west indian accents. there is no purpose being fulfilled.
but i dont think they are racially offensive. i suppose you should have more say than me because its your background being stereotyped, but the sad fact is that all advertisement relies on stereotypes. maybe its a sign of progress that west indian accents are now game, when a few years ago 'fussy liberals' might have found offence where there was none. i suppose i just wish advertisers could be more imaginative
trident the nuclear missile, or trident the police operation, or trident the horrible chewing gum?
accents for comedy effect are irritating and overused.
They're awesome. Shut up, mon.
It would only be more insulting if the guy had a rasta hat and walked in a rythm with accents on the 2nd and 4th beat.
which Raises several questions.
1) Who the fuck pitched the idea?
2)were they perchance dressed like this:http://kkk.wanted.eu.org/obrady.jpg?
3)How does a supposed stand up comedian who is clearly a racist parody relate to chewing gum?
it's just a terrible, terrible advert, and a pretty ignorant one at that. it's embarassing.
It is a shit advert but the tag line of 'something something for the nation', said with a Jamaican accent reminds me of a song or similar. It may be an unwise attempt to reference something.
