Pyroclastic flows = V bad
Shards of red hot glass travelling and close to 300 miles an hour
= certain death
you're basically fucked if it blows.
But generally, if you are very near a volcano when it blows, yes
Type of magma and the level of viscousity, i.e. stickyness. The high the viscousity, the worse the eruption. The magma type depends on the base rock that has been melted to form the magma.
Plate tectonics - Italy is at a plate margin, where africa is moving upwards and getting forced under europe. Called a convergent boundary, these are where the majority of the worlds violent volcanoes are formed
Type of eruption is also important
When this one pops, 600,000+ Italians will die
Its long overdue
not the death of 600,000 italians. That be very wrong of course
it was really cold and windy. FACT.
which is no bad thing, as long as they evacuate.

if you squint on that page about Vesuvious, it looks like the 'boot' of Italy.
this was in alaska in 1990
not many people about fortunately
that is, minus the casualties.
I love disasters. Without the casualties. Obviously. Ahem.
except their casual ties, obviously!
"The 1883 eruption ejected more than 25 cubic kilometres of rock, ash, and pumice and generated the loudest sound historically reported — the cataclysmic explosion was distinctly heard as far away as ... the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius (approx. 3000 miles or 4800 km). Atmospheric shock waves reverberated around the world seven times and were detectable for five days"
Sadly, no photos

in the middle of the night, by the room shaking. and i ran into my parents room. so, i SWEAR there was one. mid 80s, irish eastern seaboard.
but they do happen in britain, whne old fault lines slip. Never massive though, as the British Isles sit in the middle of a tectonic plate
This article mentions a quake that seems to tie in with your nightmares (6th paragraph)
made of magma, melts Alaska.
Who knew? Volcanoes
almost fell off after the dudley quake.
it rattled my radiator, I woke up in the night saying something is wrong....mrs knees said it was a train or a lorry, but like an animal i felt unsettled
