is a pox on English Literature
have you not seen those pictures of her in her new film she is HOTT
I said her work is a pox on English Literature
but yet i still don't understand why i haven't just proved you wrong.
I'd like to make it clear that this was a joke.
The Brontes are ace! Wuthering Heights is like, my favourite book ever! Jane Austen is pretty much dull, wet, boring shite though.
and I just feel that the Brontes (basing this purely on Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre) have more depth and substance to their work than Jane Austen ever had.
Jane Austen gives female authors a bad name. A point I was trying to make.
I don't agree with you, but "Jane Austen is a pox on English Literature" is a great line.
and it's almost worth getting hit for
people getting so worked up about literature. Not even in the three years of doing an English degree.
I genuinely feared she would hit you. And then me.
"Yeah that's right, fuck off you arsehole. WANKER"
gold, absolute gold.
She is right though. On both counts. But not on Jane Austen, who is about as important as Judy Bloom.
is essential reading esp for preteen girls. Dear God it's me Margaret told me more than my mother ever could.
is essential reading for girls who idolise Oprah Winfrey
you are WRONG
do you like reading about washerwomen and horses?
I love Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice and Emma.
Or funny like not?
maybe you don't get it?
the prototype Jo Brand
these 'men' are just retards.
brooding man on a horse
if we could?
someone. One day Sarah, one day.
Like a jockey?
and he'll be dripping wet. You'll see him from a distance, galloping towards you on his trusty steed.
alight and be a 5"2, toothless Irishman
then it's good enough for me
The sole reason Bath is so insufferably middle class.
she is going to rise to the bait?
I hope she does.
a sitting target for more flimsy feminist flotsam
jane austen was a great writer.
perhaps, but with insufferably dull ideas on life and plots
that sold very well. its very common these days. nothing special in her books.
of her day
i read the lovely bones. it was shite. really really really shite. fucking rubbish.
and I like to celebrate veracity
other shit books:
da vinci code (of course)
QI - the book of general ignorance. good programme. shit book.
underrated books - porno by irvine welsh.
'The portrait of the artist as a young man' by James Joyce
having said that, 'The story of tracey beaker' was much better than anything austen ever wrote.
just remembered a harry hill burp bit, where on WAGS boutique they said "trinny and susannah can't come because she is abroad".
my favourite thread ever.
but it would be if we just got that response
its pretty damn funny anyway.
i especially like my contributions.
in case you run out of toilet papaer.
You're often wrong.
Tell me why I am wrong in this instance.
But I'm not in the mood.
I don't blame you dear. Get the kettle on eh?
I'm a cad like Darcey, so the horse gets nowt. Men eh?
of a man who sports with any woman's feelings; and there may often be a great deal more suffered than a stander-by can judge of."
and poorly executed simplistic feminism
Hardly Mary Wollstonecraft
but for when she wrote she was insightful and witty.
titty, maybe even too much.
Oh fetch the doctor!
one of my favourite quotes ever is an Austen quote:
'There is safety in reserve, but no attraction. One cannot love a reserved person'
of female masturbation?
had been that bold
What is it about reading Austen that makes girls so violent?
striking. All the talk of reservation...
Basically she writes like a bored housewife that isn't getting any. And if you can relate to that then more power to your elbow.
had little choice than to be a bored housewife.
are happy being bored houswevives
many, not so much. What were we talking about again?
Can't you read?!
I never learnt to read. Jane who?
but the intentions behind the reserve seem unreservedly almost violently sexy. She just didn't have the balls to write it did she?
passion, if you lay everything bare on the table...what are we as readers meant to do then? She phrases things in such a sense as to create intrigue and encourage the use of our own thoughts. Basically: Mr Darcy, can you not see why he's so appealing?
but so many women eulogise her as an essentially feminist author. The only way I can see this is that she was a rare published female author at the time.
she was good. I'm not into the feminist debate.
to get some synthesis here. I don't think she's a bad writer, just that the plots are boring, and the writing is ultimately dishonest in its nature.
but I'm headed to the pub. bye
Anyone wanna come?
can we talk about Judy Bloom some more?
but he's still wrong.
and I'll show you who's wrong
on women except provoke anger
than provoking sheer apathy like I do.
I'd rather have women think nothing of me than want to hit me. I have been hit a fair few times by a woman. Its no fun.
not nearly as good as jane austin though.
to stop raining
NEVER SPEAK AGAIN!
I have a 10 minute walk to the bus stop. The draw of Neighbours may help me over the fear of the wet and cold.
her and Lucy will form some sort of alliance now.
Just wait till she seees Guntrip's profile: http://drownedinsound.com/user/view/2309
I can't believe it took her this long to find the thread. You and Devonmalcolm are gonna catch it now.
I LOVE YOU <3
they all need beats.
at first i thought he was just trying to make me jealous of his kopparberg : (
"she was a great feminist author"
You really did. I understand that you were drunk
these boards smell sometimes
She could sign her letters Jane Austen, Montego.
so she can't sign anything.
the books are unreadably tedious. I'm a philistine, aren't I?
you're so wrong.
have u ever really tried to read pride and prej? u have to get into it ofcourse.
and Mansfield Park, and Northanger Abbey. I had to give up on them because they were so dry. It was an effort to make myself read them.
i find them sharp and witty and exciting.
im such a girly sucker for a love story though. and i love period drama.
generally are dramas
P&P is one of my favourite novels, even though I'm not a fan of period stuff. It's brilliant!
i've just like alot of her recent posts. seems like a cool girl.
I embrace your wrongness
And you're not a philistine, just normal. Even I, sort of, don't kind of really, generally, maybe mind the odd five minutes of film
brontes = not so
Northanger Abbey = pastiche.
Plus, she should've listened to the BBC and written in the Darcy lake scene.
I know we're trying to be controversial at times but that is simply the most wrong thing I have ever read.
if she was around today though she'd write shit-chick lit.
Worst classic female author - Virginia Woolf - I can't stand her ridiculous motifs like time in Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse is painful reading aswell.
would austen write 'shit chit lit'?
by being writing trite, boring and insipid books.
i'm sick of her novels.
though i don't hate her all that much.
gosh i'm so crap at typing.
