and they need to send someone in the army somewhere.
Why shouldn't he go. He is in the Army.
Point well made
he's a perfect target for a kidnapping, and he puts other members of his regiment in even more danger.
I think he is very unlikely to be kidnapped.
They won't know exactly which soldier he is.
The one with the stretch Humvee.
Alternatively, they'll just exclusively target gingers.
isn't that like, un royal?!?
he could be seen as a very desirable target, thus putting the rest of the regiment in a lot more danger.
Too much of a trophy target.
why he wants to do it.
It's a tricky one, because he will possible further endanger the lives of others in his unit.
stated that if he's not allowed to see any 'action', he'll quit in protest.
However, if he's driving around doing Jeep Patrols like a regular squaddie, he'll be dead in a week, and the whole world will know about it.
They're going to have to make Harry think he's serving his time, same as everyone else, whilst ensuring he's 'safe' at all times.
Harry just complained about the lack of servicelast time he went shopping and he couldn't get served in Tie Rack
of an 11 man, 4 vehicle, reconaissance unit.
'over the top' etc. Alternatively, he won't be anywhere near the action and will be given lots of medals and proclaimed a hero
they all predicted 9/11, WW2 etc and they say he will get killed over there and all hell will break lose... nice.
i hope not : (
i've always had a soft spot for harry
no he does not!
he's kinda cute...
do something other than sit on his arse all day. Respec'
the persistent talk of him being shooed in through exams he wouldn't have passed, doubtful ?
he's better than us, isn't he?
that Major whatsisface
because he has to, apparently this war(according to gov't) is justified. He's just doing his 'duty', in accordance with the concept of being a soldier.
and be at the mercy of you government to decide which people you should be killin' is not a choice I respect.
given it some serious consideration.
I tried to join the RAF at 16
Still not really sure how I ended up in the MoD.
built a shield/fence yet?
I was 4th in command of official statistics, civilian branch.
the GRU ?
What a snazzy logo, I want one
Plus what if you're only of sufficient capabilities to do something as brutal and perfunctory as killing someone. I don't really think Harry has had any deep thoughts about this anyway...If no-one were willing to stand up for England in such a capacity where would we be?
How cool is that?
i knew this. in response to all the military coups in LA they just decided to get rid of it. excellence.
have potentially the biggest army on earth...
can enact full mobilisation of all it's citizens.
China obviously has the largest standing army
if China wanted they could get well over 50% of their nation fighting for them, in any case the current standing army of China might even be bigger than the population of China.
However in actual terms if every nation brought in conscription then the biggest nation (China) would have the biggest army.
Maybe Switzerland could mobilise their army quicker but they would still get beat by a proper nation. The idea of the Swiss being a impenetrable fortress is quite misleading.
I mean Switzerland.
Anyway I'm sure the army of the PRC is bigger than the population of the ROC :)
Taiwan has more people than the Chinese Army.
Switzerland's ability to mobilise about two million soldiers in approx 24 hours (Israel can probably do this as well) put the Nazi's off invading.
Not an impenetratable fortress, but a daunting one.
on Taiwan (Republic of China).
The Nazi's could have easily invaded Switzerland they weren't put off by its military might. Rather in times of war it benefits both nations to have neutral states for money transfers, meetings etc. They didn't have any desire or see any benefit out of invading Switzerland not that they couldn't.
Still my point is that whilst Switzerland could maybe mobilise a big army faster than anyone in a long drawn out war (providing no nukes are used) they would most likely lose to a bigger state.
the swiss were instructed to ignore any messages saying the country had surrended, and were told to resist to the end: the nazis could have conquered the territory but i doubt the swiss would have ever stopped resisting; one of the founding tenets of their identity is being independant.
The swiss army DID put them off.
but every country practically has plans to invade every country and in war time even more so. The fact is there would have been no financial or racial gain to be made for Germany to invade Switzerland. Sure they would have been hard to beat (what with the mountains it would probably be like Afghanistan is now) but eventually the Germans would have won.
so murdering someone or cooking them lunch all amount to the same thing at the end of the day.
Which is kind of true, but incredibly depressing.
However when morality,(as it's tending to nowadays) has no religious basis, why can't we commit acts of murder..etc
You're preaching anarchy. Anarchy would quickly lead to survival of the strongest and to a form of facism. Which would be bad for you (as a woman) me (as a pacifist) and the vast majority of the human race.
Which is neither here nor there at the end of the day, but, as already mentioned, a very depressing and ultimately futile way to think.
Sorry but personally only I have the right to determine who and when and if I should kill anyone.
Because I would have to take responsibility for it.
That is not an endorsement for everyone to think that though.
but stop misusing the word 'anarchy'
the issue at hand though, we could be having the same debate if he'd chosen a dangerous civilian profession but was being prevented from doing the dangerous bits? although i suppose he wouldn't be potentially endangering the lives of his collegues then, but you get my point.
He's not the only one to be in the army is he now...
the funeral will probably be on a Saturday and TV programmes will have to be rescheduled and I won't be able to base my day around Football Focus and some football matches will possibly be cancelled.
Those were my immediate thoughts.
not the heir. so it doesn't really matter.
but really it seems like he'll undoubtedly be putting his regiment in danger
off with 'is 'ead, record hits on YouTube, internet banned, it all ties in with all the other conspiracy theories
I didnt think of that, that'd certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons........perhaps it will make the americans extra careful.
Best comment so far!

How the mighty red army has fallen!
Source: Maps of world.com
with Ethiopia, this does not surprise me.
plus they don't have sophisticated weapons like us -- men are cheaper.
besides their name ;)
It's not really that much of a surprise.
I should think about things more closely
Their population is only about 4 million, according to Wikipedia. If there was a chart of troop numbers as a percentage of population, I'd guess they'd be very near the top.
This is the problem with statistics.
THEY'RE ALL DIFFERENT!
Depends if you're counting reservists, air forces, navy etc etc etc.
all they have to worry about now is a few chechens and guarding a couple of thousand rusting nuclear weapons. not rolling over western europe at a moment's notice.
i think its crazy they should be pulling out not going in.
it'd put more "important" people in the front line, leading to less war.
He's not a vulnerability. He's not a liability. He's going out there because he's (probably) a damn good troop commander doing his job, just like all the other troop commanders out there, who're doing their job.
Do you think in WW2 the sons of the war cabinet were off fighting on the front line?
Charles Ingram Courtenay Wood, for example, served for 3 years in the Middle East
There are doubtless many other examples.
I would have been a very slack howitzer.
conscripted armies are of a lesser quality than volunteer ones
that's not so much of an issue
surely no matter how rarely you might use your army, you still want it to be excellent. right?
in fact i think we should keep making the army smaller and better, until it's down to just one guy who can take on the entire eritrean army by himself and win!
but who would it be? :)
I would then be able to make the decision who when and if to kill someone.
and it would be right because I would take responsibility for it.
with great power comes great reponsibility.
but the rich historically have always been able to weasle their way out of conscription.
Good point. It'd be best for all concerned if the insurgents and extremists handed in their guns and surrendered now, rather than risk topping that ginger party slut of a prince and incurring the wrath of the all-powerful Middle England.
When you put it like that, I'm actually tempted to pitch up to Sadr City and ask if there are any jobs going.
I wonder if "THEY" have realised that the older he gets, the more obvious it is going to become that he's James Hewitts kid, and they want him to have an "accident" before the secret gets out?
having seen him talking on the news tonight, there is no way he isn't charles'...
so a friendly fire incident IS on the cards then
grockle has just suffered a tragic accident in a taxi.*sobs*
i think it is an utter disgrace that the media are making such a hype on him going to Iraq, i think the discussion of one particular officers postings is wrong, he is in the army and therfore should expect to be posted, furthermore they will be looking out especiallly for him in Iraq and he is more likely to be killed. If he is then a huge problem is created. It is awful to think one officers posting is being questioned in the media.
noone cared when i spent 11 year on the front line in 'nam, shiiiiiiiiit!
I see absolutely no reason why I (or anyone else outside his friends and family) should value his life any more or less than any of the other soldiers out there.
However I don't like the publicity about his movements as I think it's risky. That said I think chris_is_cool is maybe naive to blame the media for the hype. I've no doubt the Royal Family & The Army have played a huge role in getting this story out for PR.
What disturbs me most of all is Prince Harry's enthusiasm for going to war. That strikes me as a pretty naive and foolhardy attitude.
he wouldnt join the army. thats what people do in the army.
as for your first point, i agree with you, but the reality is that people do, and that may cause problems. the fact that they shouldnt is irrelevant.
