Anyone giving anything up? I would try to cut out the booze but my birthday is always during Lent so that shan't happen.
I gave up booze once. That was hard.
It's not something you do if you're not a Christian, is it? plus, there's not anything I want to give up!
or Pancake Day or Easter or....
I need to get my Masters Ass in gear. ive had a hiatus before, i can do it again. GOODBYE FOR NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I managed to successfully give up sectarian banter with one of my colleagues / friends, although he was in Australia for most of that time.
Don't think I'm going to really bother with anything this year.
...already gone since Jan 1st sans Beer and Chocolate. Which has dented my wallet as vodka is a hell of an expensive replacement. But I shall be continuing that through Lent, and then knocking the chocolate fast on the head and making a mess through easter.
reckon ill go for givin up shaving
Dairy products for lent!!!
No Cheese - my doctor will be happy with me as will my stomach!
If I was going to give something up, I'd just do it. Lent is a Christian thing right? I guess that's not necessarily bad if it gives the impetus for people to give up something they think is damaging or whatever.
But I have to keep repeating it, I've got an awful lot of text books and bible lessons and sunday school lessons to overwrite havnt I
Ive resorted to PM in people too......brainlove is next........In fact if you dont want a hectoring lecturing pm then I would advise all diser to no longer refer to our major festivals as christian.....
establish a rock link (am I so predictable?....this is why I sometimes have to use cheeky innuendo)
I like challenging myself to do things. I challenge myself all the time, but usually there's not the 5-week limit on it, so I fail. But I always pass lent. I am a hero.
I am giving up chocolate this year. I have a whole box of Guylian chocolates to eat in the next 8 hours, 17 mins.
thats what pancake day is all about....a blow out of what you might have left before the fast
I once worked in belgium , in the middle of a magical triangle Guylian chocolates were made less than 10 km away, Duvel beer less than 10 KM away, and Dowe Egberts coffee just down the road.
please see my post in Proles Lent thread.
Neither is Easter, neither is christmas, neither is pancake day, events that occured previously around those dates have had christian interpretations overlaid on top of them (as is natural by dominant power structures)
.....linked to saturnalia......the lord of misrule......Bran/saturn......santa reindeers fly agaric......flying reindeers....one of them......rudolph had a very red nose......which guides us spiritually to thinking of others, guides us out of our commercial consumerist haze to think of more sobering important matters
but lent fell one day early for that
I decree that approximately near the start date is good enough. I am a higher authority in these matters, than people who say otherwise.
I'm gonna do cigarettes. not that I really smoke much anymore anyway, so at least I know it's doable!
when you are drunk (if you do that at all) Is there a habit you dont like about yourself......a pattern of behavior that you would like to change? you can try to give that up (the ritualistic aspect with limited timespan helps people with this sort of thing....and when the habit is broken then its easier to give up permenantly)
it finishes on easter sunday
on Easter Saturday
because it is easy........why dont you go and look up the definition and origin of the word 'easter' it is in fact one of the least well disguised christian overlays.
is presented as a year zero type of thing.
Jesus was a maifestation, reincarnation of a calindrical solar sacred king who dies and is reborn.......it is a cyclical thing. Europe which was familiar with this kind of model took it like this OK except that the christians say that there is only one and that he was a historical figure, and involved a lot of writing and dogma to it, previously most spiritual do das in northern/western europe were verbal, and much better for it because they tended to be less tyrannical and were always open to more local interpretation, they were also far less authoritative/macho/male/obediance led. Roman empire was the conduit for the spread and decimination of christianity......Rome was very male centric (women were virtually chattel or slaves, as were children. In Judaic Palestein there was far more paternalistic stuff too.
Christianity and male hegemony stamped on more feminine NW european cultures and beliefs further (Rome had already done that anyway (in fact various influences spreading from the south east had always then filtered through to NW europe......Just as the Hellenic greek influences with sky gods had tended to subjugate goddess worshiping greece.
The Jews have an entirely different take on it, yet Jesus did present himself as a traditional jewish sacred king (although in a different mould from the more european interpretation.)
however I would like to point out that your education has enourmous gaps in it.......If you dont believe me or wish to challange what I say then will challange you thusly
and wonder why these things are not taught at school
The first question is easy as I have said it in a few threads before
What does Europe mean?
Great Britain.....why britain?
England......why (easy actually often taught)
Scotland.....why (again easy at first)
What was this land called befor that, and before that, and before that? and before that?
Here is a biggy
Why are there 7 days in a week? (Finding out this will give so much learning)
When did this get standardised?
What was the tower of babel made from.
Why are there a different number of days in each month, was it always so? why sis it change.
Do you know any non roman names for months of the year......what were they called pre claudius?
Yeah yeah Im trying to intimidate you a bit but Im also trying to say that Im not making it up, and to make you realise that your education is not a logical one, it is a legacy from one which hisotrically doffed its cap to the doctrines of the power brokers.
You would think that you would learn your own history, but you have not
Look at any history account of this land and you will find two great barriers, pre roman and pre norman conquest.
It is so sad as to why there is no pre roman british history taught, or interpreted..............my big question is WHY (Is the lack of written documentation from the time a good enough reason to not study this period) Its actually a joke.......to me its like an elephant in the car, you all know more about the eygptians, the greeks the mesopatanians the assyrians, the chinese than you do Britain, yet many British christians will happily ignorantly tell me that I dont know what Im talking about, i personally find it insulting and ludicrous.
I bend over backwards to try to not insult or upset too much christians I meet in real life, I never insult them, I always try to find common ground, by saying things like 'I agree totally with the teachings that I percieve to be atributed to Jesus' and Im being sincere, but I find that, that same care, is not extended to me, or others, (OK some of them are cool) but often they seem to be supremely arrogant, with littel reason, it sems that ignorance and fear seem to mainly feed religeous arrogance and intolerance.
This is the reason I get all huffety about the festivals and whatever being casually designated as christian by athieists, because actually some of the festivals could be lovely and great fun if they hadnt got tainted.
pay attention to winter solstices and equinoxes
also imbolc begin of feb, later ending up as candlemass birdgits day brides day st bridgits day.
Things to do..........go and dress a well/spring/waterfall (throw nice flowers in it, chant a blessing, or clear it of winter debris......fix that dripping tap......secure our water)
spring equinox........observe that since daylight hours now are greater than sunset hours, most birds ovulation now kicks in and egg production can commence (yes their cycles are driven by light being increased) Go out for an interesting and exploritory walk, learn yourself some native local botany, flowere identification is easy at this point as there will not be to large an abundance compared with later, try to identify something that you can eat, try to identify something that you can dye with, try to identify something that you can heal something with.
Beltaine (I personally tend to hold that it is later than May 1st (calendars change) Since I do this myself mostly, I allow when the hawthorn (may) blossom is most impressive, (the queen annes lace.....cow parsley, will also be really impressivly white at this time as well.....this is a white festival).
This year I really really will succeed in doing the fire without any modern accroutements. I will use various types of wood that I have collected for this fire, there will now be loads of wild food, I will only eat what I collect. I will urge the sun to be good...........this is when traditionally greenwood marriages were made......i.e. possible try outs......people would go off after beltaine and have out of 'human wedlock' trysts (Of course people do it all the time) but this would also be a sacred kind of thing.......the moon that will appear this month is also known as the meade moon......honeymoon.......a time for couples......a spiritual time for couples.....sacredly.....not institutionally or according to human society stuctures.
this will end midsummer (solstice) when some people will jump between two fires (and get infused with their smoke)
at midsummer one of the sacred solar kings is going to die and their tannist (or twin will be in the acendancy) this will be repeated in reverse at the winter solstice.
The suns daily age will now decrease till midwinter solstice
There are remnants of this in british folklore and rhymes, in the midsummer it is represented as Oak and Holly kings. In midwinter there are tales of the robin and the wren fighting.
And so the year turns, I will talk a little about the rest of the year later, please bear in mind that I am only giving you all smatterings of popularly accepted pagany stuff here, many people on here probably do know stuff like this, I know full well certain people who will know, its just that this sort of stuff is all more truly british peoples culture than what is foisted on us by central authorityies..........believe me I am perfectly agreeable to incorporate warm beer and local cricket matches into this collection of Britishness.
the chinese give up lent, their randroards will take them to court?
Lent can do one.
and got a bizarre urge to give up everything you've all mentioned, well, dairy, beer, cider, chocolate..
Then I'd be well skinny for a month or two coz that is pretty much all I consume.
I might just give up chocolate & cider & beer.
So no beer, cider, wine, bread, cheese, mushrooms, Quorn, marmite, soy sauce etc.
I have just had a carrot and celery juice. It weirded me out.
If I've already eaten porridge is it too late to give up yeast?
Porridge is yeast-free (unless you had cheese in it).
make you more or less likely to catch Thrush?
Although I have a yeast imbalance in my stomach, not in my pants.
good, a yeast imbalance in your pants is not nice. I'm just having food wars in my head, and dairy can be both pro and anti yeast. Yoghurt Vs Cheese.. who wins? Does it have to be a blue cheese? You don't have to answer me, I'm clearly babbling shit. :)
are of differing opinions re: yoghurt.
I don't like yoghurt though, so it's not hard for me to say No to it.
Both agree on no cheese at all though.
sort it out now.
