On this day in 1915, D. W. Griffith's film "The Birth of a Nation" premiered in Los Angeles. A technically innovative depiction of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction period, the film's premiere was greeted with protests by the newly-founded NAACP, and it's remained controversial due to the depiction of blacks as uncontrollable violent rapists and its lionisation of the Ku Klux Klan.
I haven't seen it, by the way. Silent films? In the words of Albert Steptoe, "I don't go to the pictures to read."
