i work in a library and R&J season sucks. partly because EVERYONE wants to get their hands on books we only have a couple of copies of and partly because THEY AREN'T EVEN PARTICULARLY GOOD BOOKS

one of their summer choices was by Colin Meloy's sister Maile, which is surely worth something. The kind of people that actually watch that drossy program are being spoon fed the kinds of books that they're likely to enjoy. Those of us who are perhaps more into discovering real literary gems don't take heed of best seller lists anyway. eg. 'the Da Vinci Code'- a pile of cock sucking shite.
They pretty much run the best seller list.
