Interior design thread
I'm moving rooms in my house - have decided to move into the larger room of the two. I want to get it really cosy and comfy.. it's basically painted a really cool dark grey shell, with a bed that is cream.. I am thinking lots of colour - gold, rich pink, aquas and royal purples... brighter colours. I also want a big fat fuck off mirror...
ANYWAY - I want to actually get a hold of some second hand furniture (dressers, picture frames, lamp shades) and do some re-upholstering myself - I'll have the room and the space to do it, and I love a bit of good DIY sometimes.
Can anyone recommend:
- shops I can get some great second hand furniture (in London) from that I can pull apart, paint and do things with? I look at EBAY but it seems that all the good stuff is like, miles away and I don't have a car to be able to go and collect these things....
- any tips on re-upholstering furniture (I have a basic idea but if we have any particularly hands on people on DiS, I'd love to get chatting)?
- is it cheap to hire things like nail guns and so on?
Thanks!
Rose
freecycle
I presume is in london and/or london areas too..it's a yahoo group where people offer furniture/stuff they don't want and you can get it for free. It's like an anti-ebay movement job.
^^^^
I was just about to suggest Freecycle too.
If you want to re-upholster stuff yrself then just pick up a good strong staple gun. Wilkinsons have good ones quite cheap altho i'm not sure if they have shops in London :-S
Thanks - I've not heard of this freecycle stuff
I've got lots of ideas on what I want to do / achieve.... I also need to find out WHERE I can get sheets of perspex cut out to size (ie, I want to use a sheet for the top of a chest of drawers, and then line each individual draw, so clearly visible through the perspex, with great patterns of fabric...
I guess perspex and solid glue go together......
freecycle
is great you register with your local one.
You have to offer something for free first. Then you can ask for something.
when i get back
from my interview for the interior design job i applied for, ill let you know if i can help! (i think tha place im going specialises in materials ect)
as for changing colours- are u going to be sleeping in the room you want to paint bright colours?
obviously, its a matter of personal taste, but i would recommend keeping bright colours to a minimum- they might disrupt your sleep!
Ah - that would be wonderful if you can give me any pointers.
In terms of colour, tho, I am keeping the grey shell - I quite like masculine colours, but wanted to bring in the other colours into other things, for example, bed linen, soft furnishings, lampshades (I want lots of cool lamps in my new room - at least five), and well, to make a collage / piece of several lamp shades upside down to hang from the centre of my room… Also, I want to buy a second hand chaise lounge and cover that too….. In terms of mirrors, and old gold gilded frame is what I want. I guess it will take time, but I want to create a 'foofy comfy boudoir' for myself… I can't see me leaving the house anytime soon and now I will actually have 'room' to do things like this (other room was a lot smaller), I shall enjoy it.
Good luck with the interview - and yeah, would totally welcome any pointers you might be able to offer me.
:)
well for starters
check second hand, antique shops.
i know of loads around here (surrey) that sell things like chaise lounges and large, old mirrors.
furniture charity shops can also be surprisingly good.
as for colours, id say stick to 2, (maybe 3 at the most) base colours, to keep it simple. (when you have too many colours in your palette, it makes it even harder to make decisions about furnishings!)
secondly, some designer tips: make a mood board. this can be REALLY helpful.
look through magazines and cut out pictures that sum up the colours, textures, and mood you want to go for.
(not just interior magazines- any will do)
THEN youll have a great idea of exactly what look and feel you want to go for.
hope this is some help!
:D
good luck- decorating is fun!
that's a really really good idea...
the mood board... Totally. Thanks so much - am going to start doing this straight away...
And Surrey isn't that far - can you let me know what second hand antique style shops there are around? I really REALLY want a chaise lounge... Hmmm...
well i know
for a fact theres a place in esher high street called 'memento' that has a really old chaise lounge in the window.
theres a massive antique store in kingston, in old london road that could sell one.
im not an antiques expert, so there are probably better places in london somewhere but i wouldnt know where to recommend.
try ebay though, you never know!

cool - thanks!
:D
no probs
lemme know how the mood board making goes
:)
Onya - if you get that job and you get any samples
of materials and can sneak them out, I'd be ever so grateful.. but there are some great fabrics around Berwick St in Soho.. I've started my investigative process already... I want lots of heavy, thick, rich in colour brocade.
