Who's opinions do you value more? The people who post on the boards or the actual writers? On a whole like.
who recommend me stuff they think i might like.
i have discovered so much stuff through people on these boards.
but those I do tend to take notice of are "Fans". I'm only really talking about music here though.
I use the "recommended" thing too. its been really succesful so far
I can't be bothered, last.fm is better for that i find.
recommendations come from
So much stuff gets mentioned on here!
theres a massive "wisdom of the masses" thing that you get on the boards cos theres so many people listening to so much stuff, and agreement coalesces.
but most of the writing on the boards is a couple of lines long, saying "yeah, this sounds like a and b and i like it. here is a myspace link" whilst the reviews go in depth, but generally dont make it that easy to listen to the stuff.
</board user and writer>
generally stuff which diver recommends I tend to like, but I discovered many a band through the forum here. So in general the fans I'd say, but I still love to read reviews and generally respect what the writers say, whether or not I agree. Debate; it's what this site is about, really, secondary to music.
well, mike diver. because whenever he reviews stuff he usually says stuff that turns out to be right and stuff.*
* - apart from crimes by blood brothers and good shoes.
thats been my best way to discover stuff so far
MORE FUCKING PODCASTS
if your lucky a new band might pop up if there is enough attenion
but saying that there are some writers who are pretty spot and if they like bands will champion them. some friends of mine have been lucky to been championed by a radio 1 dj
has been from hearing other board users bang on about someone until I can't ignore them anymore. To be fair though, there are far more of them than there are DiS writers.
but i like the hold steady and atreyu and mcfly and whatever other bands i like that people are mean to me in the playground about.
You are dead to me now.
with all the reviews that thommo writes because i think he's an excellent writer and he has good taste.
I must admit that most of the recommendations that I follow up from this place are from the boards here, but some of those writers can write a good article.
i'm speaking truth without pay! he went to my school and i first looked into DiS after being linked to one of his articles by fishplums.
but yeah, most recommendations i look into are from the boards.
on dis records, but i do like a lot of the reviews, which are refreshingly unpretentious on the whole.
martha and really like jeniferever, its just the rest i'm not too keen on.
i thought this was a speculative post about a Festival hosted by DiS where the fans can pick the line-up, ATP-style.
That would be good....
as we'd all vote for JAG and Jaime Sample.
Then random stuff from the boards + lastfm
If a certain band is talked about a lot I will investigate.
VERY good reviews often make me look into bands, but I don't usually have the patience to read reviews unless it's someone I'm already aware of or the review seems controversial from the comments afterwards. Also: I rate thommo and mike diver.
Apart from the odd jewel in the dirt here and there (Martbovski, Nobby Stupido, The Glory etc.).
The reviews are really crap usually.
Ones that stick in my head as being terrible are:
The Cribs - The New Fellas
Howling Bells - ALBUM
And probably a lot of other things.
So did Mike Diver, if memory serves.
