Why is my laptop so fucked?

OvertakenByTractors [Edit] [Delete] 18 replies 01:31, 22 December '06

problems
a) takes about 20 minutes to start up and is generally really slow

b) battery=dead, having only had it for a year and a bit

solutions?

a)harddrive clogged up with downloads, only 500mb of a 70gb harddrive free

b)laptop left on every night without any sleep...must be almost as tired as me

who's like a really geeky IT person here, and wouldn't mind solving my problems (those listed above...)

didn't you just answer your own questions above? or am I being really dim?

    • No no

      those answers are only hypothetical

      • Ah

Can't help, sorry, have never owned a laptop.

Start a new post in the morning when more people are online. I think Theo's the resident IT expert.

  • Well your answers are probably fairly accurate

Actually the battery one may simply be a defective battery because after 1 year I'd maybe expect it to have become shoddy but not to actually have died.

New batteries tend to be expensive and I'd be more inclined to splash out more on a new laptop than get a new battery. (I seem to remember a lot of laptops have a separate warranty for the battery that only covers 3 or 6 months compared to the year warranty for the machine - gives you an indication of battery hell...)

As for your harddrive, why not delete something, then? Though in fact I would suggest you spend £70-odd and buy a massive external drive (assuming you have firewire or USB 2.0 on your machine). Then copy all the shit you need off and just invoke the 'rebuild' option to return the laptop to factory settings. This'll wipe everything and will probably make it run faster too.

    • Cheeeers

i think i might buy/get for xmas a battery off ebay for around £40...apparantly the batteries are "new".

  • im sure they are just designed to slowly stop working over time

for no reason other than to make you buy new ones.

    ThingsThatFly | 22 Dec '06, 14:06 | X
    • ipods

are the worst for that. coupled with the crappy customer service you are forced to buy a new one which is (WOW) slightly smaller/slimmer (WOW) can hold 1000+ more songs... or get a superior product which isn't as hip.

      • I got an i-pod years ago

I use it for around 2 hours everyday, which wears the battery down in under a year. Everytime it breaks down, I go to the site, fill all the stuff in and they send a box for it.

After a week or so, they send me a new one. I don't know if this is because the problem has always been battery related, rather than me dropping it or something, but I'm on my 3rd or 4th i-pod...

    • No, the reason they go fucked is a lot down to Windows

It's major failing (in my view) is that it is rubbish at taking care of itself.

If you've the energy and the wit you should look to reformat your hard drive and reinstall everything about ever 6 months. It does a good job of clearing out all the little fuck ups that build up over time in the registry.

The batteries are really just down to technology. Nothing can last forever like that, but I'm sure they charge so much for new ones in order to try to get you to buy an entirely new PC instead.

      TheoGB @ThingsThatFly | 22 Dec '06, 15:18 | X
      • exactly.

that is what always annoyed me so much about windows, the fact that reformatting was just something you had to do if you didnt want it to slow down to a snails crawl. i used to think xp didnt suffer from it as much as 98 used to. i used to think wrong.

        Heliotrope @TheoGB | 22 Dec '06, 16:31 | X
        • Well actually I think XP probably doesn't

I like to do it every 6 months for other reasons too: it makes you actually think about what you've got loaded that you don't do. You know, like when you give your room a really good clean and throw stuff out?

          TheoGB @Heliotrope | 22 Dec '06, 16:47 | X
          • I think you traumatised everyone

with the 'throw stuff out' bit

I bought an 80gb iPod in October and have never had it working once. One of my ex's is looking after three 250gb external hard drives of mine, all completely filled with backups of my cd's. I asked her to fill my iPod from these as her and her bloke are geeky and she couldn't be bothered

Technology is a load of overated bollocks, I mean, if it's so good, where's my jetpack ?

            cadd @TheoGB | 22 Dec '06, 17:04 | X
          • really?

my parents computer is horrifically slow these days, and its hardly as if theyre constantly downloading hardcore pornography... or at least i dont think they are...

            Heliotrope @TheoGB | 22 Dec '06, 22:40 | X
      • how do you reformat Theo?

sorry for being dim, but my laptop now takes about ten minutes to boot up, and running two things at the same time, even something as simple as playing music whilst on the net, is a joke.

        Parsefone @TheoGB | 22 Dec '06, 17:08 | X
        • restart into DOS

          type
          c:/format/u c:

only do that if you have a proper copy of xp and things though. i think you can do some kind of soft reformat or something silly like that, but this is the best way i think. its definitely the most satisfying.
