stuff about pinochet is a lie.
just as a word of warning.
a lot isn't though.
also worth pointing out that he was more popular in chile than the government he replaced.
but one of the people who tends to turn up and offer accounts of how she was tortured was a friend of my family out in chile and basically she was having tea with them when she was supposedly being tortured.
so just take everything with a pinch of salt really.
but yeah, i have no idea why she'd do it.
but it's a fact that the leadership before pinochet was worse.
or at least that's my understanding of it, based on my family's experience, and that pinochets comparable popularity went further than the middle classes and he stopped a lot of very serious problems regarding food and the like.
this is all subject to being dragged up from my memory so don't hold me to it.

Pinochet's atrocities were major news items around the wrold at the time. He destroyed democracy in Chile. He got away with it because a fascist Chilean state suited the US.
I don't think the US specifically cared whether it was a "fascist state" or not, it could have pure liberatarianism and they would have liked it, it was about economics and the ability to invest not social or political policy.
In any case I'm not really sure whether Chile under Pinochet fits the definition of fascist (the word gets thrown around too much nowadays) more just a junta state.
In any case first Friedman and now this, it's a good year.
