"Ten compete for BBC Sport award "
Zara Phillips
Darren Clarke
Andy Murray
Joe Calzaghe
Ricky Hatton
Nicole Cooke
Monty Panesar
Beth Tweddle
Phil Taylor
Jenson Button
Button, Panesar and Murray have won nothing; Clarke didn't perfom better than the other golfers in the Ryder Cup team; gymnastics is keep fit, not sport; show-jumping belongs on 'It's A Knockout'; the boxing vote will be split beteen the two boxers.
Therefore, the winner is either Taylor or Cooke.
I meant who should win
i've only heard of
andy murray. sports is for pooftas.
you win
the piggiest foot of the year award.
the programme
is SO painful to watch.
three hours of telling everyone how great they are. it's shit.
That's what I was thinking
Bizarre argument really. I would say that as Tweddle has done something that no British gymnast has done in god knows how long, then she should be in with more of a chance. Obviously she won't be, as the public seem to think that Darren Clarke will appreciate some sort of sympathy vote. Which I'm sure will make him feel really really good...
My winner is either Calzaghe or Cooke. Personally.
Phil THE POWER Taylor
should win. For the fat men of sport.
And add an exclamation mark
More peolpe would tune in to 'Sports!'.
drop the programme
i say.
and drop sue barker from ever appearing on tv again, except at wimbledon.
I love Sue Barker :(
i don't like seeing
elderly women flirt..
sue
wanks herself off about ally most nights.
Zara Phillips should win
Ask Rachel.
Show jumping is entertaining
because seeing a posh tit fall off a big horse is a good laugh
It's also an
incredibly skillful and highly demanding sport that requires months of training and years of dedication - something that Zara Phillips has undertaken in abundance.
She's followed in her Mother's footsteps and enabled Britain to be number one in the world at a highly contested sport.
My girlfriend has learned me good.
.
"incredibly skillful and highly demanding sport that requires months of training and years of dedication - something that Zara Phillips has undertaken in abundance." and that she can afford to do because her mother is bank-rolled by British tax payers.
^this
she's obviously a talented sportswoman, but she's also had the best posible circumstances within wich to start and it's galling to sit here having to pay for her to play at being a sports star when there's so many better things the cash could be spent on.
Zara Phillips Princess Anne's daughter?
is she a sportsperson now? How weird. I didn't know that.
Has been for a while
my dear.
oh
clearly I am behind on my Royal Family news. I only know who she is because she was always in my local pub at home being posh.
Except foxhunting
Aha!
Button
did win the Hungarian grand prix.
but I agree he doesn't deserve an award for one victory.
No he didn't
that was Andy Murray riding Zara Philips' horse.
It
really is quite a weak list, mostly due to the fact that there weren't many British sportsmen or women that shined this year. I would give it to Calzaghe on the strength of his win against Jeff Lacy alone, he totally outboxed and outshone a man that was supposed to be his toughest test yet. Possibly the best British boxing performance of the last decade.
If not Calzaghe, then Phil Taylor. Whether you consider darts to be a sport or not, I can't imagine anyone else that proved themself to be the best person in their field for the last 10 years winning world championship after world championship being ignored quite so much.
I'd kick Jason Mutton up the arse on the way out and tell him to get a hair cut
Also, when
was the last time a shortlist for this award didn't include at least one footballer?
Good times.
Gymnastics
IS a proper sport.
Zara Phillips
ISN'T A SHOWJUMPER!
GAH!
Although if she wins, it'll be an absolute travesty that Pippa Funnell didn't as she was truly the best eventer in the world the year she was up for it. Zara has done well, but she's no Pippa.
^^^ POTD?
oh give over.
no
now stop it.
^^^^ POTD?
Eventing is by far the least
elitist of the equestrian disciplines, and it's got a heritage of unknown riders and horses making it to the top.
It's full of wonderful fairytales and the such.
Zara is incredibly talented, and yes, of course it helps to have money, but you must bear in mind that anybody that has two Olympic standard parents has a pretty good chance in their chosen sport. Both Captain Mark Phillips and Princess Anne were phenomenal eventers.
It's not an easy discipline at all, takes incredible amounts of hardwork, years of preparation and it's dangerous.
Plus, fact fans, one of the very few sports were men and women compete equally against one another.
plus, it's actually a sport Britain do consistently well in!
You just made me choke on my tea
Oh shoosh.
I've been riding for 14 years
and even given the best horse in the world I doubt I would make it round an Olympic cross country course.
There's huge amounts of skill involved, skill isn't gender specific... riding is all skill and things like strength make little difference.
Non-riders can't even begin to comprehand how difficult it is "oh, don't you just sit there?"
I would have thought there are very few, maybe zero, modern Olympic athletes who get anywhere withou
Yeah, in the old days when it really was about amateurs taking time out from work, but nowadays, the only way to compete is surely to have the facilities, coaching and time to really work at it. Unless you can get sponsorship in some form, how can anyone without wodges of cash really be expected to compete in any sport that has the slightest requirement for equipment/grounds?
For football
though, you only really need an actual ball and some wasteland.
I'm not rich.
I'm good. And have a horse.
And have plenty of friends who are also not rich and are incredible riders.
As Pigfoot says though, unless you're lucky picking up a star horse, the really good international standard ones do tend to cost a bit...
...as Theo said, it costs a fair amount to get to the top in nearly any sport.
Not Table Tennis.
or Darts or Snooker.
That's your argument out the window.
nearly any.
LEARN TO READ.
I just named the first three
that came into my head. I can go on.
Or did I only name the only three that don't fit your criteria less than a minute after you posted it? Man I'm good.
What about...
...motor sports, or a lot of winter sports, and sailing and anything else that requires a lot of equipment.... they all cost a lot of money...
I'm not saying riding is a cheap sport - but it is an incredibly amateur sport apart from the very top riders, and in all honesty, whilst they're not poor, a lot of them certainly aren't rich-rich, Zara is more of an exception than a rule.
Lots of top riders just grew up in the right environment, with supportive parents/horsey families, had a lot of luck with ponies, and then worked incredibly hard to get to the point where they had an international horse.
Plus, very few top riders actually own their own horses, and most have to run businesses (horse sales/training centres/breeding etc) in order to afford to compete. The prizes aren't big.
People's stereotypical view of equatrianism as a rich persons pursuit is incredibly distorted.
It's not as good as Table Tennis though,
is it?
i'm with fiona on this one
neither rachel or fiona are 'rich' and they both still have horses.
i can't speak for fi, but i know for a fact that rachel is incredibly good at eventing and riding and she spends three days a week teaching other people to ride, something it's taken her since she was very young to achieve.
i'm proud and wish that those who know little about the world of horses would leave off a bit as there's more to it than polo and money.
Mmm, polos
They also eat appples, let us not forget.
Can you please
leave us to wind Fiona up in peace?
Oliver Skeete managed it?
never competed in the Olympics though.
Nor did you
I just wanted to type Skeete. Great word.
How do you know?
Because I just typed it
it's clearly a great word. Look for yourself!
Skeete.
By George, you're right!
if someone owns a horse
then they are rich
if they say "but I don't have any money" the answer is "you have a fucking horse, you idiot"
also... sailing is very well publically funded for young people, until you're 18 you don't need to buy a boat, and by then if you'rew good you can get sponsorship.
I don't know if the same is true of horses. But I don't know any plebs who ride horses to a high standard and I know loads of plebs who are good at sailing.
horses make you poor
but i have enough money right now to own a horse, should I want to... i'd have to live very simply, but even on my tiny minumu-wage wage, it's possible.
yup.
true fact:
i went to school with monty panesar in bedford.
he was in the year below me.
i never spoke a single word to him.
the only
reason i remember him was because he was one of the only sikhs in the school.
the school was racist, not me.
I'm going to beat prole to it
(well, prole and the rest of The DiS 'pool contingent)
Where's Peter Crouch?
Ok, being serious now, Where's Steven Gerrard? If jensen fucking button can get on the list on the basis of winning a single Grand Prix, then surely a FA Cup winning player can get it? (not to mention he was one of few decent world cup players...)
To be fair
In general, Button had a very good season - completely 100% destroyed his teammate, and consistently came 'best of the rest'. I reckon he deserves to be there - motorsport is always so underrepresenteted [woah fuck I went wrong in that word somewhere]. I mean, Schumacher never won the international award - crazy.
Bugger all that.
Give the prize to Phil the Power Taylor. It should have gone to Monty but if Duncan cocking Fletcher isn't going to pick him, fuck it.
Yes...
but the car has been developed around him for several years, Barrichello had to come to a compleately new team with a car which he admitted didn;t suit his style at all.
Jenson Button will only ever be quite a good driver, nothing more.
The Motorsport nominee should have been Dan Wheldon (I mean howm many British sportsmen win the Indycar title and the Indy 500?) or Andy Priaulx (Has won the World Touring Car Championship for the 3rd time in a row)
...
a) Yes, but the margin that Button was better by goes beyond that.
b) I reckon if Honda can keep up the progress he could be WDC in a couple of years. He has the potential to be very good [...and I don't like him, so that's saying something]
c) There have been numerous British people that have done well - Lewis Hamilton too. But people still reckon 'there's no skill involved', which is a shame.
Where is
Steven Gerrard? He won the FA Cup Final.
Overseas personality
Schumacker won the world title SEVEN times and never won this award. Once, he was beaten by that yob Ivanisovich who won one tournament all year, coincidently, a torunamemnt that the BBC broadcast live.
what's
going on with your spelling?
So,
the posh girl won it.
Ha!
