castro built a nation healthier and more literate than america despite having teh most dangerous job around.
pinochet was worse.
Stalin took the USSR from an Agrarian society to a Nuclear state withinh 25 years.
Progress shouldn't blind us to the evil that some leaders do.
You'd be able to read the most wonderful literature in the world: Gabriel Garcia-Marquez! Julio Cortazar! and the wonderful poetry of Pablo Neruda! What more could you possibly hope for?
Any person should be complete for life. They'd never need to do anything ever again. Trust me.
all share some political sympathies, some of their works are completely apolitical - like Pablo Neruda's love poems.
I threw the rod back and got the hook caught in my wrist.
[i.e. I don't understand?]
Garcia Marquez is amazing.
One Hundred Years of Solitude is just about my favouritist thing ever.
have you read any other spanish language authors....seriously recommend soldiers of salamis by Javier Cercas... and shadow of the wind by carlos ruis zafron....
Shall check out the former - muchas gracias!
Until late 2008, I would be very grateful. It's just I'd like to visit Cuba, and it's probably best-experienced before said inevitibility.
yes, Castro is probably a hundred times worse. Open your eyes folks. Honestly.
"castro built a nation healthier and more literate than america despite having teh most dangerous job around."
Just like those wonderfully clean bathrooms and medical centres the Nazis had in all their concentration camps. Wonderful.
the old havanna of child prostitutes and the mafia?
are you not a fan of chavez either?
any such speculations (even though my "is worse than" was speculation too of course as I'm in no position to judge morals). This lefty ignorance just offends me greatly having been born in a communist country, luckily (illegally) fleeing when I was young but hearing the constant stories of how terrible it and all the endless lies about it all were.
People really should try to read both sides of the argument in matters like this and not just jump to the popular opinion.
That's all I'm saying.
But Castro overthrew a horrible, authoritarian regime, with the aim of helping the Cuban masses. Pinochet overthrew a democracy, and we can probably safely say he didn't give a fuck about the welfare of ordinary people.
Yes, a lot of things changed. Yes, Castro has done some awful things. But that's enough to separate them in my view.
Castro has probably perpetrated crimes on an equal scale to those of Pinochet. But at the same time he has worked hard for the good of the majority of Cubans, something Pinochet never did in Chile.
they both claimed to have the national interest at heart but are both self interested. why choose to stick up for the anti-american one?
Needless to say I would most probably have a very different opinion on the matter.
Whether Castro was a 'good man at heart' is also irrelevant. What I said is that some of the policies persued by Castro have hugely benefited the people of Cuba, Pinochet on the other hand decimated Chile economically & socially.
but Chile under Pinochet was an economic miracle.
that he was poor economically is rubbish and chile was regularly held up as the one place where the washington consensus had succeeded.
but certainly not comparable to Pinochet. AT ALL. I truly believe Castro's heart is in the right place.
Castro killed thousands.
Pretty good comparison I think...
end of discussion.
Not end of discussion.
I don't really believe Castro has anyone's good intentions at heart.
If he had then surely he would have ceded power to a fit leader?
it'd be lovely if the world worked like that, but it doesn't.
That's a fair point.
But I still loathe Castro...:)
He has killed perhaps up to 10'000 political opponents.
MAINLY in the first 10 years of his regime.
has a point. castro is certainly no worse than what he replaced but allende was actually a fairly moderate social democrat.
[Look at the TIMES people.] Thank you, sorry, etc.
you said "Castro overthrew a horrible, authoritarian regime, with the aim of helping the Cuban masses" and i think that's garbage.
I do it all the time.
of being in power, many political dissenters were killed
Castro imprisoned 'social deviants', those he believed to be CIA or counter-leftist or 'fascists'. Pinochet murdered opposition as well.
Where it gets ethically murky is whether 'we' live in any greater a model of society and are in any position to judge. Either's social stucture is flawed, but in comparison...I dunno.
DiS' posting system means that's to EVERYONE. how diplomatic : D
why did you bring thathcer into it? you're surely not saying pinochet is worse because he was thatcher's mate?
