what do YOU define Middle/working class etc as?
Inspired by Traynors earlier comments.
I was middle class because my Dad has his own business!
Sounds like bollocks to me.
I don't think. By the traditional standards very many more people are middle class than ever used to be. Going to university would make you middle class.
I know I am middle class. My mum is actually working class, though.
that working class is where you need benefits to get by, or barely scrape by on your wages.
and that middle class is where you live comfortably and whatnot.
And upper class is where you NEVER HAVE TO WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.
else. some people in typically working class jobs are quite well off.
plumbers may earn more than university lecturers, for example.
It's about your living requiring skills that anyone can learn over academic skils that require schooling, etc.
Hence teachers, doctors, nurses, programmers, librarians, would all be middle class, but they clearly earn a living.
It's just that when this stuff was determined working class people were also poor.
a concrete definition then?
as far as i can see, it's a meaningless term which used to be relevant and hasn't died yet.
The terms "middle-class" or "working-class" tend to be used to describe cultural groupings and tendencies rather than any meaningful economic boundaries
You've opened a massive can of worms
If so I am proud...
who argue about someone's fence being 5cm over their property line.
and the lines are there for a reason!
from MY property?
you're only working class if you grew up with a piss bucket in the bedroom so you didn't have to go to the outhouse at night.
...or summat like that anyway.
but well above lower.
whatever you think you are, you are.
Both my parents are from working class socialist families so I've grown up with that in me, even though they did alright.
Pretty much everyone is now old "middle class" nowadays so the threasholds should be altered: Private school means middle class. There. Unless you got a scolarship.
To be honest this conversation is gonna go on forever and is ultimately pointless, Britain is far too hung up on class.
in my book.
posh state school = middle class.
i'm middle class, but similarly my parents are from working class socialist families, so i've been brought up to have more left-wing values than many of my peers.
i think class is a pretty unavoidable part of british society though, the whole country/political system was built on it.
private or public school?
public... i'd say no. most of the people at mine weren't upper class, the fees were around £5000/year.
What public school did you go to?!
I'm only trying to cover all bases for you. x
but I'm posh.
How many doilies do you have in your living room?
no biscuits either...
Working class: keep coal in the bath.
Middle class: keep ciabattas in the bread bin.
Upper class: keep mutant DNA in their cells.
there we go.
This bloody thread again...
But I retain my right to be miserable!!
