Nah. You're probably right.
Trapper has just opened a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer]
Hawkeye Pierce: I see you are a beer drinker, sir. Would you care for a martini?
Trapper John: A martini? Yeah, I'd love a martini.
Hawkeye Pierce: [to Ho-Jon] Ho-Jon, get the gentleman a martini.
Hawkeye Pierce: I'm sure you will find them satisfactory. They're quite dry.
[sips from his glass]
Trapper John: Don't you guys use olives?
Duke Forrest: Olives? Where in the hell do you think we are, man?
Hawkeye Pierce: We have had to make certain concessions for the war; we ARE three miles from the front line.
Trapper John: Yeah but without olives,
[reaches into coat pocket and pulls out a jar of cocktail olives - drops one into his glass]
Trapper John: a martini just doesn't quite make it.
[Hawkeye and Duke stare dumbfounded at the olive
I was just raving about Short Cuts to my friend at the weekend.

Nick Cotton in Eastenders?
M*A*S*H only yesterday
(favourite childhood sitcom)
like the film
The film is INCREDIBLE. Especially the end bit where they finally get to leave Korea... Sigh...
He made some unarguably great films, such as MASH, The Player, Short Cuts etc and yet he also made some right old bollocks (OC And Stiggs, Pret A Porter, Cookie's Fortune etc). And either genius or bollocks could occur at any time.
I can't work out if he is a good director who was prone to terrible lapses, or a crap director who occasionally hit things right on the button.
Philip Marlowe: Excuse me, I don't see any Courry Brand cat food here.
Supermarket Clerk: Some what?
Philip Marlowe: Some Courry Brand cat -
Supermarket Clerk: Could you spell that?
Philip Marlowe: Courry Brand, C-O-U-R-R -
Supermarket Clerk: Oh, we're all out of that. Why don't you get this. All this shit is the same anyways.
Philip Marlowe: You don't happen to have a cat by any chance?
Supermarket Clerk: What do I need a cat for, I've got a girl.
Philip Marlowe: Ha, ha. He's got a girl, I got a cat.
is bound to have bad patches where they go off form. On balance, Altman's a genius though.
