but you could say that about anything really expensive. Like, why would anyone pay £300,000 for a Ferari when you could spend £100 and buy a Fiat Panda like mine and it does more or less the same thing?
that's what im going, y'see. that might not apply to everyone. in fact, i think i'm probably spoiling the point, because there are many perectly valid reasons why people might buy new computers. in fact, im thinking of doing so myself.
I do know people who would pay that much for a guitar like that.
Did I even tell you the story of a friend of my dad? He was about to move to Spain with the missus and was in the process of selling the house and getting his affairs in order. One such affair was a cheque for £20,000 which was supposed to go towards the house they were building.
Only one day it disappears and they have no idea where. His wife goes spare looking for that cheque until one day she's in one of their spare rooms and she spots two guitars she's never seen before.
At this point I should mention this guy collects guitars. He has about 100 that I've seen, and as I found out when I innocently enquired if I could have one, the cheapest is worth "only about £800", so you can understand that his wife thought it significant that there were two guitars in the house she hadn't seen.
She asked him where the guitars came from.
"..."
She asked again.
"...bought 'em."
For how much?
"...10 grand each."
That money was for the house. Why did you buy them?
"...they were good."
I think in the end they were 1956 Goldtop Les Pauls with the original hardware and sunburst finishes. They sustain forever. Very sweet, especially to collectors. But they went back and he was in the doghouse for a couple of weeks, so it doesn't really matter.
a Fender Tele and a handbuilt tele thinline sitting in hardcases at the foot of my bed and an Epiphone Les Paul and an Ibanez Flying V sitting in hardcases in my living room. I haven't even opened the cases let alone played them in months. Another six guitars of varying value lying about unplayed as well. Also quit the guitar class I was running on Mondays. That's what happens when you get involved in DiS romances with hearthearted mentalists :p
Last Martin I played was nice but someone had kicked a fist sized hole in the front of it
I've recently been playing a blue Rickenbacker 4001 bass that used to belong to JJ Burnel of Stranglers fame - it was the actual bass used on the recording of Peaches and if you strike up the bassline it's well weird because it sounds EXACTLY like the record - as you'd expect really but spooky nonetheless
I refuse to accept that as an answer.
probably a millionaire
who liked guitars
That would be it
i'm fairly sure
there's one that looks like that in cash generator just now for but a fraction of the price.
Ry Cooder - he likes guitars

exactly!
and why would anyone buy a computer that actually works when they could continue to use a 5 year old one that's falling to pieces?
umm..
