Repo Man is on this Friday on Film Four.
I think i've heard of it.
This week I watched Graden State and Old Boy - the latter was very good but nowhere near as great as it's status claims. Garden State was a bit 'we're all quirky and dysfunctional cool, this is what we do' pointless fluff, overrated.
about Garden State. why do people love it so much?
In terms of quirky US indie films I probably prefer it to "Lost in Translation" but like it less than "Wonder Boys".
people keep telling me it's dull. I love The Wonder Boys but to me Garden State just seemed to be a bit empty and quirky for quirkiness sake like someone remembering their twenties through the eyes of MTV directors. None of it's particularly believable especially the romance. It's just something to watch and pass the time with. Eternal Sunshine is a far superior tale of romance and dysfunction.
What is repo man anyone?
starring Emilio Estefez (sp?). They are 'repo men', i.e. they repossess cars where the owners haven't been paying their hire-purchase.
As I remember something semi-supernatural starts happening?
One of the cool aspects of the movie is that, to avoid product placement, all items have white labels stuck on them. E.g. beer cans are covered in white paper which says merely 'BEER' on it.
and find Garden State empty and quirky for quirkiness sake (as I also do) it's possible you'll share the same view as me with regard to Lost in Translation - i.e. that it's forgettable and emotionally unengaging. Although Bill Murray does (as always) but in an excellent performance.
Repo Man is a film but not one I've seen. It has one of the best TV censors ever when the word "Motherfucker" is overdubbed with "Melonfarmer".
that's also a very try hard film, quite scrappy but watchable. A lot of these films seem to have no real conclusive ending.
Has anyone seen the following and are they any good:
The Life Aquatic
I think the Edukators is an excellent film. I've not seen Junebug or Thumbsucker. I didn't rate the Life Aquatic at all - I thought it was really messy, overly-quirky and the script was flawed and felt like he needed a redraft or 2
is the best punk film ever.
It is in my top 10 just because I find it so entertaining. Plus it is the most quotable film ever.
The Hermanos Rodriguez Do not approve of drugs
Neithe do I but it's my birthday...
provided by one of the film's sponsors. you see them in every car (and eve nthe policeman's motorcycle).
The 'pick'n pay' brand was also from a south african supermarket chain but i don't think they were sponsors...jsut one of hte producer's thinking it would be funny.
It's a completely plotless film and its surreal effects wear off quickly if you pay too much attention. But watched stoned the soundtrack and the weridness of the film sort of meld together and its a fun film
Cox's other famous 80s film is a complete mindfuck...brilliant
