how safe is hulme? i'm might be moving in to a flat on stretford road soon. would i get killed walking to asda?
i don't know nuffink about manchester, but I would say that you're more likely to get killed on your way BACK from Asda. Cos then the murderererer could steal your food and save himself some money - there's nothing to be gained from killing you before you get to Asda.
on the way to ASDA he could steal his money, and therefore not be confined to having goods from ASDA but be able to use the money in any shop he wishes.
If JacobJones is carrying cash then I'd murder him before Asda. However, if he's planning to pay for his food by card or cheque, I'd prefer to murder him afterwards and take the food.
i never knew mugging could be so complex
I was looking at places in Hulme too. My friend who currently lives in Manc says there are safer places - like Baghdad. But then we lived for 2 years directly opposite a crack den, so I don't know if his opinion can be trusted.
I mean, when I went up there in 1994 everyone was still banging on about how evil Moss Side and Hulme were.
However, they had just started levelling the area with the result that supposedly 'safe' bits like Victoria Park were quickly overrun with drug-dealing fuckheads.
In short, I would have thought the new housing has revitalised the area somewhat. It's fairly common practice: Down here they're redeveloping Kings Cross which has had the direct effect of moving all the scum-fucks into Camden Town. Ho hum... :-(
yeah, but moss side is alot safer than longsight. or wythenshawe.
and for just pointless violence, the worst places i've ever seen are fallowfield and withington.
anyway, this flat is on a main road, i just don't want to be intimidated walking through birley fields. hulme seems to be full of scum, like
See that ironic - because the very same friend I referred to in my previous post said Fallowfield and Withington would be a lot better.
hmmm, whenever i pass through fallowfield on a friday evening i just see horrible random violence. and last time i was in withington i saw some tramp chasing a girl down the street trying to grab her arse. it was sinister.
but some people round there did. Not that I'd ever walk down Dickinson Road alone at night...
i was mugged twice in fallowfield, once at knife point, but was then perfectly safe in West Point (little enclave incorporating levenshulme, longsight and burnage) ... doesn't make alot of sense.
because they're strong student areas. You're more likely to have your house burgled and such, because the criminals see it as easy pickings (drunk, unaware types) and also they know they're not actually robbing any locals.
yeah, but i look about 18 .. so i would get mugged as a student. sad but true.
That's my main consideration - I want all of my stuff to remain in my house. Street violence is secondary to that.
I may be a big pussy in my heart, but that doesn't stop me beating up random folks on the street to bolster my street cred. It's Virginia Company policy: Visit cruel punishments for minor infractions to terrify and deter the rest from attempting the like. That's how I roll.
ah, but burglary is really rare. your house contents are probably safe. it's your mobile phone and your credit card that are the problem.
not in Studenty areas, and not if you don't have bars on the windows and a strong front door and stuff.
Well, it certainly wasn't rare 10 years ago. Loads of my mates got their places done over and we had burglary three times over the two places I lived in Longsight.
nationally, it is extremely rare. it's simply not a cost-effective crime to commit.
Living between Rusholme and Fallowfield - Never
Living between Rusholme and Longsight - Never
Withington - Twice in the space of a few weeks. We came back from the shops while they were doing it the second time! That was fun.
And he's never had a fight in his life. So yeah I guess.
You walk in a very relaxed way. Obviously anyone could be attacked but the people I've known who've been mugged more are generally the type to not walk massively fast and they usually don't look around a great deal, usually look at their feet.
^^^ That's quite vague but I do think there are ways to be 'safer' when you're walking about at night. Looking like you really know the area is one of the - determination when you walk somewhere.
our office is in hulme and i deal with alot of locals and it strikes me that car crime round here is ludicrously high. not sure about street robbery, though.
I just remember mentioning how many personalised number plates you see around there and my mate suggesting it was because they were all stolen cars! :D
Certainly everyone I knew with a car in Manchester had had something done to it, and often visitors would find their window broken or something when they got up the next day. :-(
you are right in what you say, but there are certain points where muggings are quite convenient and no matter how you walk past, you will be a victim. n that.
would i be killed?
Fuck sake, the whole of South Manchester is basically fine. You might get your car nicked and you may get mugged, but you're no more likely to statistically speaking than in London. There are far worse areas in Birmingham and Liverpool.
have you been to hulme? honestly, these people are scum.
and i've lived in north manchester my whole life and never been mugged. but maybe i'm just REALLY HARD.
i lived on it once, and now i work on it. asda's a fairly safe distance away. providing you live near the park/zion centre area. it gets a bit bleugh further towards salford/old trafford.
oh, hold on. i just looked at your map. you'll be fine.
What a stupid question
