Is the oboe one of the saddest sound instruments in the world?

Or is it the French horn or even a combination of both?

  • until the player is very very talented

the oboe sounds like a duck with difficulties

Subtle application of the oboe and French horn can produce devastating musical devastation with devastating consequences.

Consult the theme from Terminator 2 for the former and the Judy Collins version of "Send In The Clowns" for the latter.

    Devastating.

    • how about the original Emmerdale Farm theme

for wind instrument interplay akin to Heathcliff screaming out Kathy's name in a minor key roar

The emotional impact is ruined by switching to a major key at the end, falsely leading viewers to believe that everything will somehow turn out alright in the end, when in fact the very nature of a soap proscribes against anything turning out at all. And in Emmerdale's case, each episode being slightly worse than the one that came before it, the theme tune itself could be construed as one giant musical lie.
