Why do we still use them, they're shit aren't they?
Does anyone still use them?
Tell me goddammit.
USB pens and yousendit are where it's at.
spreadsheet of records on one. I get scared by the prospect of putting information on a CD or something.
The 21st century scares me in general, actually.
was when I was writing my dissertation, which was four years ago. They're fun to take apart.
for a long time.
but i like that they're still there. sometimes its best not to discard something shown as reliable for something flashy and new...
maybe I'm just prejudiced.
Anyway, as physicists, we always used to change him to Einstein in the department at uni.
What the hell are you people on about?
God, someone sent me that fucking email about how you can still read words if the first and last letters are right and the others are jumbled around.
Jesus, he's been on the internet as long as me! :D
I'm going to have to sulk now.
but if you have and MS Office products go to the Help menu, then click 'Turn on Office Assistant'.
Prepare to HATE!
On word. I turn him off when he appears unbidden, and he does this annoying little WAVE before vanishing. It's so annoying. The wave is just the final nail in the coffin. Of irritation.
I think maybe I did this by not installing him in the first place, or something.
I recently pulled Typing Tutor program off a disc that must have been about 13 years old so my mum could use it on the PC I've left at her place. It was all present and correct and I was amazed.
A CDR would be unlikely to still work after that much time, I think.
I keep meaning to get a box of 10 'just in case'...
out of my depth.
I'm leaving. Can someone start a thread about a simple topic please? I'm confused.
I was hoping it might become a thread for rubbish things that we still use... like erm, floppy disks.
Floppy disks like the big square ones? Like a sort of special plastic envelope. Don't touch the shiny bit!!
One of the best bits of WarGames is when he pulls out those old 8-inchers. Marv.
Marv is easier to say and type than marvellous.
teenage boys pulling out their 8-inchers "marv".
So everyone just starting burning things to CDRs and then throwing them away after one use.
to sharpen the edges and then frisbee them down the office and seeing how far into the wall you could get them to stick.
...or buried in someone's head.
As for floppy's I've lost count of the trouble I've got in putting work on floppy and finding the disk is corrupt or otherwise malfunctioning on the day I need it. Same with CD-Rs. If anything CD-Rs are worse.
I use my iPod now. 60GB of playing around space is a spicy meatball.
