Pakistan are 10-2 already. True story.
i would be confident we would now win, but as we are england, we are going to fall apart with the bowling soon.
The Cricket Cup Trophy? The Test Ashes Series Challenge?
Go team! Hit a googely maiden over wicket for six!
and it is still early morning.
it's the whole text speak generation thing.
if i write 'hu' from now one, virtually slap me.
against sri-lanka. we were doing amazing then we ended up with a draw.
i watched england at lords a month or two back and we were amazing, but after flintoff declared it all went down hill....bad tactics freddie!
are amazing, but our side is greatly weakened, yes okay injuries and what not, but were going down hill, because of it.
they're doing well so far. A series win against Pakistan would do their confidence no harm, ahead of the Ashes. They'll get humped there though...
are at home this time, and they'll be determined to make up for last summer.
I think we'll run them mighty close again if we can get Jones, Freddie, Hoggard and Harmison fit. Don't forget, we only need to draw the series to retain the Ashes.
We've got injuries, when players come back, we'll be stronger and we'll have good young players who have now had their chance, through injuries, fighting for places.
truly international class bowlers.
That's my main concern.
Anderson to get fit again. Mahmood needs some good coaching, I don't know if Kevin Shine is as good as Troy Cooley. We'll find out though.
we've not become a bad side. I think this spell of injuries may make us stronger in the long term, as young players are getting some invaluable experience that they wouldn't have had the Ashes winning team stayed fit.
...is an absolute dream of a spin bowler for England. If the Ashes team can regain fitness, who on earth has such strength in depth AND youth across their potential squad? Very few teams.
England should be set up for big things for the next decade really....but then this is an England team still.....
england wasnt a fluke at all last year. perhaps there is sense in what your all saying.
He can field and he's put in some useful innings with the bat.
it would be good to have two fit test class spinners.
Panesar needs encouragement and support, he's already a better bowler than Giles and he's only 21. He'll keep getting better as long as his confidence doesn't get shot to pieces in Australia.
he is 24. Time flies.
'Capable' and 'potential' are all very well, but I demand results!
for someone like Ricki Clarke too. He's only 24 and his batting and bowling seem to have improved a lot this season (it's only division 2 though).
but he's actually appeared to knuckle down this year and he should only get better.
the other night, truly outstanding, and seemed mature for his age. And his interview made me grin.
He's my new second favourite cricketer, behind Liam PLunkett.
grasp the chance as well. Sure, he's untried, but the talent there is unquestionable, and he's got the sort of personality that could have a laugh at the sledgers and not get upset by it, which is where Monty scares me a bit.
a 20/20 game, at his home ground wasn't it? The Ashes in Australia are gonna be a whole different kettle of fish.
Australian crowds can be tough.
will mock his feilding!
Harmison and Panesar are on fire.
holy shit, what a performance.
i have my npower board with 6 on one side and 4 on the other!
to judge how bad a pitch it is until we bat
and it's going to rain all weekend
....you know you're in trouble when you start repeatedly losing wickets to Kevin!
how long Pietersen will last at the crease.....
time for england to face this obvious uneven bounce.
will even out eventually. If they lose from this position though, they'll be disappointed.
and I agree with everything Pigfoot has said. Good work.
...else we'll be screwed by the weather. Which means I probably won't get to play on Saturday either. Downer.
Mr B. George, have you played much so far this season? My batting average has skyrocketed to 15. Mmmm.
...i've only just considered how spectacular that colapse was, what with lunch intervening. 90-2 / 119 all out. Athers would be nodding in approval.
I just wish he could do it more often.
...Harmo is amazing on his day, Hoggy is amazing on his day, Panesar looks more and more like the world-class spinner we've lacked for so long (if the King gets fit we might have a half decent spin attack going there), there's a lot of top bowlers at our disposal, not unlike the aussies and windies in their glory days.
...has gone to shit.
Tresco does look out of form though. His hundred against Sri Lanka wasn't entirely convincing either.
lets not forget he's the fastest England player to 5000 runs or something isn't he? And he was immense in The Ashes.
...that was more of an unneccessary outburst towards Tresco than anything else.
...Alistar Cook is amazing.
every inch a test batsman. He is going to score A LOT of runs for England.
will faze him either. I think he's a certainty in the team from now on.
bless him, took two amazing catches today and i think someone should point that out. I like him.
but his batting now looks to be shit. I hope he can get a big score because he needs the confidence. It doesn't look like Fletcher is going to drop him.
...has always been judged a little harshly. He has come on leaps and bounds over the last season or two though, i agree.
I'm sure he's due a good knock too.
favouritest thread for a while.
...since we weren't being shit when under strength against the Indians ( i think).
Is it me, or has test cricket since Micheal Vaughn took the England captaincy got an absolute fuck-load better?
but I think Nasser Hussain deserves a lot of credit. His attitude seemed to transform the test side. I have a huge amount of respect for him and I'm not sure he's got the credit he deserves yet.
Your right about Nasser and Fletcher and Nasser's stepping down honourably was also inspired, the man deserves a knighthood.
But my point is that Test cricket in general has improved as a spectacle in recent years. I like to think that other test sides have had to change due to England's resurgance, but thats probably a rose-tinted view.
possibly primarily one player - Adam Gilchrist. The Australians started scoring at almost four an over in test cricket and could attack knowing they had someone like Gilchrist coming in at 7. He would then take the game away from the opposition at a run a ball. He'll go down as one of the best players ever.
Other teams have tried to follow suit and I think only England and India under Ganguly have been completely successful.
Steve Waugh was captain so he was responsible but he could change the tactics knowing he had Gilchrist coming in at seven. Ever since then, every team has tried to find a wicket-keeper who would get in solely as a batsman. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have managed to find one.
...was a major factor actually, and I've forgoten about him somehow. He does seem to be a different kind of player to the rest of THAT aussie era. And England took it on further.
...to an extend its KP and Freddie playing their game. But Vaughan seemingly tactically reinvented the England side utilising those batsmens qualities and his on-paper embarrassment of bowling riches, and suddenly test matches are like watching a beautiful one day game that lasts for 5 days. If you get my meaning. And it seems to have rubbed off on everyone else to an extent.
I was asked to play for a team in Raynes Park a few weeks ago but I couldn't play that weekend and the last two weekends I've been away. I WILL get a game soon.
Good work on the batting average though. I think mine would be about 4. One good boundary, out next ball. Every innings.
..."wow Adam, that was probably the best shot i've seen all day" is usually the last thing I hear from the umpire at the non-facing end prior to getting out to some stupid looping non-bowl nonsense that makes 2nd's cricket harder than 1st in my opinion*
My brothers have both got centuries this season, the bastards...
*read that as I suck but am good with excuses
6-19, that's just a tiny bit good.
he should play sans-beard more often.
I just saw the score, what the hell happened?
good to see he's learned from his mistakes in the last game. Pick your fielder...
I forgot about the cricket. What's the cocking score?
that's good. I will go to an appropriate website to discover more intense details.
Me, Pigfoot and Snow_brigade are providing a better commentary than that Test Match Special lot.
Henry bobbygeorgefelt are we? Mmm. It better be more amusing than the guardian.
...nothing like being brought on to replace an injured fielder at Short Leg to cheer you up following being dropped.
Really. Silly Mid On/Off, Short Leg, etc. Why? I can never concentrate on the ball cause I'm petrified of losing teeth or the use of vital joints.
Oh, the pain. It's almost the bicycle crossbar incident all over again...
didn't see it. Was it as bad as it sounded?
...i read about that too, didn't see it. "Fuck off Inzi, why don't YOU field there"
I missed it?
I love cricket controversy.
and I know it would interfere with the sight lines.
It's still brilliant that a window causes such controversy though :)
make a fuss?
...he should try playing at Mountsorrel Castle CC in North Leicestershire. They laid their track West-East so that the sun sets behind the bowlers arm if you bat second. Genius.
....which way will this go?
...England can close today ahead with just 2 wickets lost, then I'll be AMAZED if they find a way to avoid victory against a Pakistan side who really have no answer to Harmo on this kind of wicket.
They got to 90-2 with no apparent dramas, and then died. There's nothing stopping us doing exactly the same.
there'll be the traditional 'lose a wicket just before close of play and send in Hoggard' scenario?
...they paid to see Hoggy's stand.
Anyway, we've got Steven Harmisons reverse-sweep materclasss to come hopefully.
I suppose I best run off home from work now where I can watch this properly.
Best. Thread. Ever.
Someone pinch me!
The pitch is made for Harmison and he needs a massive game. We have just got out their weakest top-order batsmen and a make-shift opener. If we can get Inzamam and Yousuf out cheaply THEN I'll be happy. Their batting line-up is very strong.
Well, that was a decent end to the session.
