DiS short of writers?

Kevtheone [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 11:05, 16 June '04
This site used to be pretty comprehensive for reviews, but recently album releases from Ash, The Charlatans, Hope of the States, The Beastie Boys, and also soon-to-be-released Badly Drawn Boy and Kings of Convenience have gone unoticed it seems. These releases are some of the more mainstream ones as well, theres probably quite a few more I've missed.

I know that nobody writing on this site gets paid, and that writing on here is something they do as well as a dayjob so not verything can be covered, but is it worth looking at taking on more writers?

A good point and what happened to the DIS reviewer competition?

That was months ago and there's been no word since. I'm sure there were lots of entrants but I didn't hear a thing after I sent in a review and a 400 word 'rant' (the requirements of the competition).

I would happily contribute any kind of review if needs be but I'm sure the DIS people hear that all the time, probably why they held the comp in the first place.

Damn it, always get those two mixed up!

Thanks! You've blown my chances of being a DIS reviewer now!

I am now a filling well of disappointment.

Well, there's definitely been a few new writers whose pieces have only been appearing here since about March. I'm guessing it's probably them...

Ah so you did, sorry. It was ages ago and I'd forgotten I'd read it.

          Cheers for the reply.

yeah in all seriousness, it would be nice to hear the official line direct from the top. I'm sure there are lots of us who spent time to come up with something good to enter

          • Re: DiS short of writers?

It wasn't a COMPETITION it was a call to arms. And we had an utterly ridiculous amount of emails. I currently have 400 or so emails from people waiting to join dis, and it's a queue kinda system, one which i dont have time to go through at the moment (bear in mind all the extra workload of answering newbie questions, trying to work out which people have joined and not done anything, getting to know the people as people, etc, etc...)

We did add several people who haven't done anything and several more (about 10 or so) who've been very active and probably seem like part of the furniture already.

The trouble is, DiS is not run by a full-time team of people and in order to expand in the right ways, priorities, for me at least, have shifted towards a few things which have the potential to pay my rent and bring in enough cash to take on some staff - so the folks who do bits in their lunch breaks and at weekends can get their hands dirty allday, everyday with no distractions like 'work'. And as such, we'll have a new editor who'll be the very first member of staff proper as of mid-July. Part of his job will be to go through all these "I wanna join dis" emails and find the best ones.

Everything's so backwards and i hate being rubbish, but I'm trying my best and trying to work out how to make everything more organised so things run more smoothly, but currently it's near impossible to keep up with the 1000 or more emails a day and the crazy amount of pointless phone calls and then the arguements all the other crap people probably assume we have 10 people to deal with. But sadly, we don't. We've got some great people here who do what they can, but the boring stuff isn't really top of their priorities...

Hope that answers some of your questions,

            Sean

We didn't get sent the Beastie Boys (or if we did, I aint seen/heard it, nor sent it to a reviewer).
Hope of the States we didn't until a few days before it was released. And Andy only got it to review at the end of last week.
I did Ash early so we could do the very first review of the record - as there's a whole fanbase who wanted to know what it was like first.
Who cares about Badly Drawn Boy? Or has he changed that piss stench tea cosy hat of his?
Few people were talking about doing Charlatans, but to be honest, it's a bit of a let down.

A lot of people I reckon, thats why someone is going to the trouble of reviewing the album, and many will buy it.

That's all understandable Sean, cheers for the info.
Although I'm sure it was a competition ;-)

I write to my MP daily. Well, I used to until they took out that injunction. Pity. I'm sure Robert Kilroy-Silk's a huge Corrs fan. He probably doesn't particularly trust them, but I'm sure he loves them. Appartently Patrick Bateman's a huge fan too.
