Music Social More…

A point.

Although people like The Killers aren't constantly 'breaking new grounds', they are producing music which thousands love to listen to.

Someone with a band full of nerds playing glockenspiels may well be called 'inventive' and 'original', but it doesn't make them good. No-one will be around to listen to their second album, because the scene will have passed by then.

  • But.....

surely the people who liked a band's first album would look out for them in the future, even though the scene has passed. They might not like it, granted, but they'll still listen to it, having liked their previous work.

  • Confused as usual.

Popular does not equal good. By that rationale U2 would be the best band in the world, wouldn't they. Thousands love to listen to them. Many thousands more than the Killers. So does that mean that just as the numbers of listeners The Killers have makes them superior to the hypothetical glockenspiel band, by your fucking dumb theory U2 are better than the Killers by however many more people listen to and love their music?

    • to be fair

it's all a matter of opinion. I'm sure more people think the Killers are good compared to a small indie band that we would consider better. I mean there is no worldwide definition of "good music". I would say Muse are good. You would disagree. Wrightylew would say the Vines are good. You would disagree. Not trying to have a pop, just trying to make sense out of what im typing....

      IrishMagpie @John_Brainlove | 7 Jul '06, 00:21 | X
      • I think audience numbers are completely unconnected to quality.

So I completely disagree with everything Wrighty says.

      • things aren't necessarily popular

because they are good. don't forget how much money major labels spend on marketing!

        crablin @IrishMagpie | 7 Jul '06, 01:10 | X
  • Doesn't necessarily mean they're not good.

Are we talking about anyone in particular?

Surely "the scene having passed by" is more of a problem to Killers-type bands who are more in thrall to fashion? Smaller indie acts tend to carry on with small audiences for years in soem cases. (That wasn't intended as a criticism of the Killer per se.

They've written a couple of great pop songs. Sadly they've also written "glamorous indie rock n' roll" but you can't have everything. On a pop level "Somebody Told Me" and "All The Things I've Done" are ace but I'm not sure they'll still be around in 2/3 years time.

  • how is this "a point"?

    what "point" are you making?

also, i'm confused - when you talk about scenes passing bands by and nobody listening to their second album, you ARE talking about The Killers, right?

      • I enjoy most bands on some level

even the Killers and U2. But it's just glossy, hyped, and unfulfilling. I would struggle to get through an entrie album's worth of either band.

    • hmmm

        oasis??!?!

        -Raz- @crablin | 7 Jul '06, 01:10 | X
      • Yeah.

I thinnk Wrighty has a completely distorted view of any kind of (actual) alternative music, why it exists, why people like it, what kind of people they are, what their motivations are etc etc etc. He seems to thin everyone who likes anything off the beaten track is some kind of jaded attention seeking scenester. It's really quite vitriolic and bitter and I don't quite get where it came from. These entrnched positions come up over and over about people only doing things because they want to be seen a certain way or whatever. It's so misguided.

    • Point - Counterpoint

A band doesn't necessarily have to be breaking new ground, as you say, in order to be good. Case in point is Band of Horses debut. As derivative as the music is here BoH are keenly able to put their own stamp on it, thereby creating a finished product which is greater than the sum of its parts. And it's each individual's evaluation of this process which separate good bands from tribute wannabe's. You might not agree the Band of Horses album is any good, just as I'd say the Killer's mediocre at best. My point, again, is that good is good. Autolux is great. Razorlight are shit.

Conversely, a band which strive for breaking new ground doesn't automatically score points with me either. Some I get, some I don't. Fiery Furnances I don't get. Architecture in Helsinki I quite like.

Wrighty, my friend, relax. Your tastes are going to evolve, and because you're a big music fan you find yourself on DiS to laugh, argue, DiScuss etc bands with others equally passionate about the music they like. That's why we're here. It's fun! It's not a contest, merely an exhibition. No reason to always be comparing your tastes with Mr Brainlove's or anyone else's. Take a deep breathe, relax and stop taking everything sa damn personally. Just cos I think the Killers are shite doesn't mean I think you're shite cos you like them, although... nah, I'm kidding.

I gotta go. My girlfriend is pissed I'm spending my evening typing instead of ...erm, whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing with her. (ahem!) Good night, kids. I'd logged on to regal yous with an amazing thread I just invented and you'll all ignore...but you'll just have to wait till tomorrow fer that. Nite, nite. :-)

The more you try to be clever, the more, the more, the more you look stupid.
