Its like a school gang, DiS.

wrightylew [Edit] [Delete] 47 replies 19:20, 26 June '06

The minions make threads cursing bands fuckloads, gaining about 900 replies each time. "I hate the Kooks".

Then Sean or Crablin comes along and says "I actually think they're ok." And suddenly, everyone's plucking up the courage to agree.

Its like a schoolyard or something.

  • I can't comment

because I haven't heard anything by them.

    bobbygeorge | 26 Jun '06, 19:21 | X
    • but if Sean and Colin say it,

      it must be true.

      bobbygeorge @bobbygeorge | 26 Jun '06, 19:21 | X
      • exactly.

i heard somwhere crablin recommended pat benatar.

now, i can finally let you all know that 'love is a battlefield' is the GREATEST song i've ever heard :(

        fihiki @bobbygeorge | 26 Jun '06, 19:22 | X
        • I heard sean and crablin

          first signed Pat Benatar.

There'd be no Pat Benatar if it wasn't for DiS. Thank goodness for DiS.

          bobbygeorge @fihiki | 26 Jun '06, 19:23 | X
      • Yes

Colin just contacted me and asked me to recommend The Zutons to you all.

        Honest.

        Damian @bobbygeorge | 27 Jun '06, 00:28 | X
  • I agree.

But it's always been that way.

    loque | 26 Jun '06, 19:23 | X
    • but

I still don't like the Kooks. I don't hate them, but they just don't do anything for me.

      IrishMagpie @loque | 26 Jun '06, 19:24 | X
  • I still hate the Kooks !

Worst band ( apart from a lot of french ones but that doesn't count ) I've ever seen.
    And I still hate Keane.
    But I stil like Embrace.
    And King Adora.
    And Coldplay.
    And Thirteen Senses.
    Silly me !

    lyle | 26 Jun '06, 19:24 | X
    • Argh Coldplay

with X&Y they actually made half a great album. The first 6 songs are really good. Then they just lost it. The title track to the previous album is the only decent one. And I don't own Parachutes.

      IrishMagpie @lyle | 26 Jun '06, 19:27 | X

      *puts on mum voice*
stop showing off in front of your friends!
you do NOT like king adora!

      Jamie_Summers @lyle | 26 Jun '06, 19:32 | X
      • I do.

And have no friends ( whatever that is... )

        lyle @Jamie_Summers | 26 Jun '06, 19:36 | X
        • You always sound really depressed :(

          loque @lyle | 26 Jun '06, 19:38 | X
          • I try to look that way.

            So it's working !

            lyle @loque | 26 Jun '06, 19:39 | X
    • No you misunderstand me, for the nine millionth time.

The people who DO like the Kooks etc. won't say they do in the 'I HATE...' threads, but they will when the bosses say its alright.

By no doing of their own, but still it goes on.

      wrightylew @lyle | 26 Jun '06, 19:34 | X
      • I've onlmy posted 12567th time

        so you're wrong.
Can't have misunderstood you a millionth time !

        lyle @wrightylew | 26 Jun '06, 19:36 | X
  • Maybe.

I think people exaggerate their hate for mainstream bands so when they say 'actually they're ok' it sounds like a more major turnaround.

I can say with some conviction that sean or crablin have never influenced what I think of anyone.

    Thom_fa | 26 Jun '06, 19:30 | X
  • Ho is Kocks?

    Anschul | 26 Jun '06, 19:30 | X
  • There seems to be a Muse...

    reassessment going on as well.

I dislike both bands though, but horses and courses and all that.

    tom_from_sparks | 26 Jun '06, 19:31 | X
    • different strokes

      for different folks

      jp100 @tom_from_sparks | 26 Jun '06, 19:33 | X
      • the strokes suck tho

that i've got nothing to say song is the worst song ever recorded. i lost my voice heckling when they played it live. fact.

        sean @jp100 | 26 Jun '06, 19:40 | X
        • thats nice

          bigmanwithagun @sean | 26 Jun '06, 19:57 | X
    • I'm sticking to my guns

      and saying they're both over-rated.

      colonol_k @tom_from_sparks | 26 Jun '06, 19:36 | X
      • good for you.

        next!

        fishplums @colonol_k | 26 Jun '06, 19:38 | X
      • i always loved muse

and I always defended them. To be honest, in a year I think the tone will be anti-Muse again. They always seem to get popular here, just as an album is released...

        IrishMagpie @colonol_k | 26 Jun '06, 19:39 | X
        • no, it's before an album is released.

when the singles are seized upon by the general public it's "TROOPS! RETREAT! THEY HAVE SOLD TOO MANY!"

          fishplums @IrishMagpie | 26 Jun '06, 19:42 | X
    • I can never decide about Muse.

sometimes I think I really like them and feel compelled to go buy their back catalogue, other times I find them annoying. They're magnificent live.

      Thom_fa @tom_from_sparks | 26 Jun '06, 19:38 | X
  • i think

there are some people that tend to follow what Crablin or Sean says blindly or not say anything positive about a band until they have (of which The Kooks is a good reference), but i wouldnt say these were the majority by a long way.

For the most part there is a lot of solid arguements from both sides on any band no matter how 'big' they are.

    Jordan_229_2 | 26 Jun '06, 19:38 | X
  • It's total bollocks

Find me some evidence, like people posting in that thread as if they'd always liked them who previously said how much they hated the Kooks.

    TheoGB | 26 Jun '06, 19:38 | X
  • sometimes it's like a concrete jungle...

    sean | 26 Jun '06, 19:40 | X
  • Maybe in some cases but I dunno..

...I mean I posted on Crablin's thread but haven't on any of the "I hate the Kooks threads" but it's definitely not 'cos of who posted it.

It' just that I'm pretty neutral on the Kooks and don't care enough to start arguing with people trying to defend them but I like a couple of the songs enough to say "yeah, they're alright" in response to someone. Which is what I did here.

On the whole I just steer clear of "I hate the..." threads 'cos they quickly get really dull and repetitive. Even when it's someone I don't like (i.e. all the Sandi Thom ones the other week) the threads quickly became the same opinion repeated over and over again ad nauseum.

And I'm more likely to post on "I like the..." threads 'cos they tend to have a wider range of opinions and therefore discussion.

So surely it's not so much the school gang mentality so much as that people who are neutral about bands can't be bothered to argue negative opinions but are happy to back up positive ones.

It's surely the same in conversation? If you're talking about music and someone criticises someone you don't care too much for but don't actually dislike, surely you don't usually try and force an argument. But if someone says they like someone you like a bit then you might agree n'est pas?

    • im with this guy

      on the hole

      Jordan_229_2 @theguywithnousername | 26 Jun '06, 19:46 | X
      • ^ thats rough

but yes, as am I. I dont bother with those 'I HATE' threads so much, theyre repetitive, almost entirely predictable and often lacking any sort of substance. Endlessly listing the things that I hate on an internet message board, so that people can say 'Oh I hate that too' or 'You're an idiot, I love..." is more depressing than most things that I can think of.

        bigmanwithagun @Jordan_229_2 | 26 Jun '06, 19:51 | X
  • I agree

If a lesser-known poster has said this, he would be outlawed and lynched.

          • true.

even though it wasn't the right cereal.

AND his rock hands jive dance at the end was a bit half-baked.

            fihiki @IrishMagpie | 26 Jun '06, 22:07 | X

            • i know it was weetos

surely if you've put that much effort into the video you'll at least buy the right cereal....

              IrishMagpie @fihiki | 26 Jun '06, 22:24 | X
              • I thought it was rice crispies or ricicles

but to be honest I wasn't paying that much attention.

                Thom_fa @IrishMagpie | 26 Jun '06, 22:50 | X
              • Effort does not equal money, Magpie.

We spent about 25p each on the pink bowls, so I wasn't willing to buy a box of Frosties.

It'd be pretty blasphemous. I eat Weetos at least twice a day. Its a homage, you could say.

                wrightylew @IrishMagpie | 27 Jun '06, 00:08 | X
                • damn

                  now I want Weetos

                  • The subtle,

but refreshing cocoa taste, relaxing the taste buds. Slowly softening in the sweet, sweet milk, the hoops of passion are inviting to all the five senses.

                    LOL!
