yes or no?
Islands are good, but WWCOHWWG? is a stone cold classic.
praise the lord
but it's a bit all over the place isn't it? sometimes structure is there for a reason.
just highlights how brilliant a record without traditional structure verse/chorus/verse etc. can be. That's the charm of the record, it's a sprawling masterpiece.
or just without any structure?
couldn't really be seen to work against it. It flows without ever becoming even slightly messy.
I'll have $20 on The Unicorns winning by a country mile.
i prefer listening to Return To The Sea to listening to WWCOHWWG?
Return To The Sea is more fun to listen to. I fell in love with it instantly. Who Will Cut Our Hair... passed me by without grabbing me the first few times I listened to it.
But I don't know if it's better or not.
The Unicorns' stuff was darker and odder.
It wasn't all funfunfun like islands are.
They're both great for different reasons, I'm not sure I prefer one over the other.
i prefer islands.
but i prefer the unicorns.
is an utter masterpiece. But I think Unicorns are probably my favourites. I think it's a little dangerous to compare the two so directly. They are obviously DIFFERENT BANDS and the feel of the two albums reflects that. I imagine Islands will have greater longeivty (sorry, I can't think how to spell it) though. Nick Diamonds seems more suited to The Industry than J'Aime and Alden Penner. I think we can expect some interesting stuff from Islands in the future...
..unless they tour themselves into the ground like The Unicorns did.
Alden is still doing stuff, he's playing 5-6 dates in Canada with Brendan, although I think he is actually a janitor to earn $$$ :)
Jamie is moving to Australia and marrying his 18 year old love interest.
So yeah, I guess that all of them ended up wanting different things in the end. I just think that Nick is the most motivated, and wants the most from it - however with the Unicorns he couldn't get that out of 2 others (well 1), and so I can see it being hard to get it out of 5 or 6 in Islands.
There's no comparison though. The Unicorns were MUCH better than Islands, even Th' Corn Gangg stuff was more exciting than the Islands album, that's not saying the record is bad - it's *good*, just not great.
