I'd love to get to see her, although EVERY single review/comment/story I've heard about Cat Power live has been terrible. I hope it is all a lie, and you have a wonderful time and come back to say how much of a showgirl she really is!
3 times. Once was one of the best shows I've ever seen, once was just absolutely bonkers as she completely lost the plot and once was was mind numbingly dull.
Basic point - is shes on form there's no one better. If she's not it'll be rubbish and you'll leave after half an hour.
she puts on a good show about 1/3 times. The other 2/3 are interesting and memorable but will also most probably irritate the hell out of you. I think she's more on form now than she's ever been though.
friom her last show in Paris...
I've seen her twice : first time she had excuses but second time was just awful.
And from what I've been told she can act very badly with the people from the venue when she's not in a good mood.
Last time I saw her (at the Barbican coincidentally) I was on edge the whole way through. She almost lost it half way through but managed to pull it back.
it was like watching a ticking bomb intently and waiting for it to go BOOOOM!!
i actually prefered the bits when she was alone to when she played with the band even though it was obvious she needed them to be there. love and communication was phenomenal though.
my god her voice is sublime. and with a voice like that you really don't need to apologising all the time.
she really, really shouldn't dance though.
was love & communication?!
i'm gay for cat power right now.
wasn't some of the dancing sign language and hip hop irony?
i liked it. was better than her just holding the mic.
although you're right about them needing to be there, you get the feeling it could have fallen apart a bit without them.
I liked the dancing! I found her madness endearing.
But yeah, it was all lovely in a kind of nervous/anxious way. I could have watched that for ages.
that she needed the band there. When she was alone, as good as it was, it looked like the other Cat Power gigs I'd seen in the past was starting to creep back up on me, especially when she kept adjusting the mic.
But yeah it was still brilliant. Love & Communication & Where Is My Love were fantastic.
all "The Greatest" when she was playing with the band.
Then when she played solo she did 'I don't blame you', 'Hate' and a couple more that I don't remember. She changed the lyrics to Hate to "I don't hate myself and I don't want to die" it should be noted also.
the Greatest live made so much more sense.
and love & communication was SERIOUSLY THE BEST THING EVER.
i'm trying to conjure up part 2 to my review of seeing her play it all stripped down in Dublin.
love,
the fanboy x
Wha?
I didn't know about this :(
yup
rescheduled from the gig she cancelled earlier this year.
there might still be some tickets going. check the barbican website.
..

i've heard exactly the same thing
so whatever happens it'll be an interesting experience...

the videos
on You Tube that I've seen of her performing recently has been excellent.
Check this from last Tuesday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iNOpxFeYio
I.....
.....adore her on that video!
Also someone who went to Bonnaroo said that she was excellent, and he put it down to the fact that she is probably laying off of the drink nowadays.
me!
so so excited
not what I heard
friom her last show in Paris...
I've seen her twice : first time she had excuses but second time was just awful.
And from what I've been told she can act very badly with the people from the venue when she's not in a good mood.
There are tickets and I'm coming!
!!!! :o)
It would be good
but 17.50 is too much for me at the moment. Enjoy!
especially
17.50 with the fear of the gig being shit...
That's why I won't ever go see her again...
Yeah
Last time I saw her (at the Barbican coincidentally) I was on edge the whole way through. She almost lost it half way through but managed to pull it back.
When she's good though it's amazing to watch.
Look at it this way
you'll be free to celebrate Sophie's birthday rather than being a big SPLITTER like the other evil people on this thread.
Boo! Hiss!
When's Sophie's birthday?
I have a nasty feeling it's this weekend isn't it?
i thought she was celebrating on friday?
i didn't realise she was doing something on wednesday.
i plead ignorance guv'nor...
Ah, I understand now.
*tuts at accidental, even though he wasn't aware of when Sophie's birthday was*
Her birthday is actually Wednesday
But we'll be at the Barfly on Friday. The point was to come to a pub and be celebratory...
YAYYYYY!!
:D
oops
that was to hannah. :)
I'd be tempted but
Not at that price
Not after hearing The Greatestest: wasn't a patch on You Are Free.
I like The Greatest
more than You Are Free.
But Moon Pix and What Would the Community Think are far far better again.
I CAN'T WAIT.
Hurrah!
you forgot the covers record!
although you are free would be my favourite one of hers.
Yeh.
I have no idea why I don't like You Are Free much. I should like it more.
Maybe I should listen to it again
but the great thing about You Are Free was the ecclectic nature of the songs. The Greatest all seemed to be sounding the same...
you are free
is boring, she hasn't done anything good since moon pix
I really like You Are Free
He War and Maybe Not are great tracks.
Moon Pix is still the best though.
no !
It's 'what would...'
first 4 songs on What would.....
*drools*
MEEE!!
can't wait!
ok, so
the plan for tonight is to meet at 7 at the barbican.
hannah82, button, homsick_tom, fionapinkstars and possibly me if i'm on time are going to be there so come JOIN US.
Nononono.
I need foooood.
I need a plan.
I'm going to leave work early.
Erm.
She's onstage at 8.30 right?
oh, you don't like my plan :(
well, there's the riverside cafe at the barbican which sells nice food?
I'm still ROFLing at "if i'm on time"
There's a possibility you WILL be?
:-D
YES!
i am by nature a punctual person. really i am. i just tend to adapt if i think others are going to be late.
YOU'RE MEAN. :(
Its because I'm always late
thats why! I know...
see!
I'M NEVER LATE
Well, I don't strictly finish
until 7.
Is it cheap?
It's not a bad plan as such.
I've no idea about the prices?!
Could always grab something from Tesco on the way and eat outside?
that could be a plan.
I'll need to get food as well.
You all finish earlier.
Come to Old Street! We can have ultra-cheap-pizza, or thai or something nice.
I'm lazy!
And need real food.
I'm being rubbish aren't I?
I could come to old street
that might be the easiest/quickest option.
erm, ultra-cheap pizza and thai are both fine by me.
We'll see what i have for lunch.
There's plenty of cheap things we can at around here.
you could go to charlie wrights
for super-cheap yummy thai.
I couldn't betray
yelo like that. It'd be wrong.
that all sounds good!
as long as it doesn't involve falafel or strawberries because i'm eating that now.
yelo?
where's that? how do i not know about this place. is it any good?
HOXTON sQUARE
ohhhhh
i didn't know it did thai. hmmm...but it's in hoxton square. must be kinda pricey.
It's usually around the £5 mark
depending on what you have.
It's very very good though.
jag.
hahaha
THANK YOU!
Everyone
email me when you've made a decision on where we go tonight please!
I'm so busy in work today can't wait to get my minion!
well, that was intense...
it was like watching a ticking bomb intently and waiting for it to go BOOOOM!!
i actually prefered the bits when she was alone to when she played with the band even though it was obvious she needed them to be there. love and communication was phenomenal though.
my god her voice is sublime. and with a voice like that you really don't need to apologising all the time.

HOW AMAZING
was love & communication?!
i'm gay for cat power right now.

yeah the best stuff was without the band
although you're right about them needing to be there, you get the feeling it could have fallen apart a bit without them.
I liked the dancing! I found her madness endearing.
But yeah, it was all lovely in a kind of nervous/anxious way. I could have watched that for ages.
it was clear
that she needed the band there. When she was alone, as good as it was, it looked like the other Cat Power gigs I'd seen in the past was starting to creep back up on me, especially when she kept adjusting the mic.
But yeah it was still brilliant. Love & Communication & Where Is My Love were fantastic.
Anyone got a set list?
I'm just interested in what sort of stuff she plays live. I'm glad no one wasted their money, then. :-)
it was
all "The Greatest" when she was playing with the band.
Then when she played solo she did 'I don't blame you', 'Hate' and a couple more that I don't remember. She changed the lyrics to Hate to "I don't hate myself and I don't want to die" it should be noted also.
yeah, i noticed that
she played quite a few covers as well like blue moon and hit the road, jack.
i'm still amazed at how incredibly insecure she is and how upfront she was being about her problems with alcohol.
Ah well,
given my love of You Are Free and my un-love for The Greatest probably for the best I didn't go.
but
the Greatest live made so much more sense.
and love & communication was SERIOUSLY THE BEST THING EVER.
i'm trying to conjure up part 2 to my review of seeing her play it all stripped down in Dublin.
love,
the fanboy x
I just want more now.
How did it go so quickly?
