The product doth be greater than the sum of its parts. Gestalt.
Am I making sense?
No. OK. Take Courtney Love for example. A complete mess, que no? Dingy, even. But I've played a few songs off Celebrity Skin in my own unique interpretation and I can tell you there is very definately talent behind the songwriting. How is this possible, I wonder?
a) If not for late night drug abuse, rock stars may very well find a cure for cancer. I mean if Heddy Lemar invented radar gadgets between movies, why not?
b) No question. Musicians are smarter than yer average bear!
c) We British are not inclined to make sweeping generalizations! Especially when we haven't a clue what the fuck yer talking about.
d) Musicians who're successful are often inflicted with a mild form of idiot savant. In '76 Bowie is quoted saying he had to reteach himself how to go grocery shopping. We were not surprised.
Perhaps you can think of additional explanations. Cos, here's the crux of it. I'm damn near genius. But I write shitty songs. No, no. Bad example. I'm not anywhere near "genius" nor am I a serious musician. OK, just pretend. Being really, really smart doesn't mean diddly when it comes to being a musician. If you're BSP's Yan it might help, y'know, dropping some weird old classic lit reference, but generally speaking there isn't any correlation.
What's the point here? None. There is no point. It was either this or start a thread on why the new Rocky movie could be the first sign of the apocalypse. Truth is I just wanted to use "gestalt" as a thread title and this is was the best I could do. Sorry.
Or you can *DiScuss the intellectual input of songwriting from whatever vantage point suits yer fancy!*
