Broken Social Scene
away with you
I can't believe there isn't a few songs you wouldn't like a lot.
I don't like 65 Days of Static much.
You can't just say Battles are 'crap'. Even if you don't like them that much you have to admit they're technically astounding and highly original (except that song that apes Pekin-O, badly)
Snorable fashionable and disposable.
or Battles? Because Battles don't have a myspace, and their hardly fashionable.
to bobbygeorge about BSS.
I don't get the fashionable bit. Watcha mean?
And for the record, I don't like BSS that much either...
but they do have a couple of really ace straight up rock songs that I think wrightylew would like.
they're not official but they stream official (albeit, badly chosen) Battles songs.
Don't like them but they aren't crap !
http://www.drownedinsound.com/artist/view/7078 ... are dreadful.
can shoot me and throw me off a train, but .... Volcano!
what Lyle said.
There are a few artists that get talked about on here that I think are total arse - but its all a matter of personal opinion aint it.
are amazing, i genuinely can't see how with their back catalogue you can't find something truly amazing in it
but BSS? Nah you fool!
But I wasn't impressed with the album. Battles are great though, in a 'I'm cleverer than you' kind of way.
isn't that difficult !
while i think the self-titled one is good, You Forgot It In People is actually magical.
Granted, I only listened to it once though!
I'll give you forgot it.... a go then!
whose opinion are you basing this on?
anyway, Broken Social Scene are f'king awesome. quite simply some of the best pop music around.
are awesome. Seeing them at ATP confirmed that. I'm sad to see no one has taken my Volcano! bait
NOW that's a good band name...
it doesnt have Wolf or Tape in it.
Wolf say Volcano! Tape for bait ?
the capital 'V' at the start, renders this argument...
Volcano! that I was talking about
being so damned good, Broken Social Scene would've been my highlight. Fire Eye'd Boy! Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl! J Mascis! Shoreline! ohhhh..
you can't go being roooood about BSS.
They truly are exceptional.
Volcano Im Still Excited.
volcano! have a signed document from Volcano, I'm Still Excited!!! that gives them immunity from ever being sued for the name.
but still, a good fact to pull out the bag
i don't see the point of this thread though. You're basically lumping all of DiS into one person and saying that person is wrong when they disagree with you on a matter of opinion.
It's kind of a public service, keeps people alert.
I like BSS (they were really good at ATP), but I wouldn't say they were one of my favourite bands.
I really don't like the latest album with the exception of "bandwitch" but you forgot in people is a great album.
And which battles songs have you heard? Because i'd say they're hit and miss too.
DiS popular bands, but BSS?? What are you on? They're great. I'm sure there's loads of other 'crap' bands that you could have picked for this thread.
Usually he's shown his crap little face by now...
in varying degrees
whether these are DiSish bands or not I'm a litle unsure (in some cases)
you're right there.
I forget where I heard about them, I did say I was unsure of how DiSish those bands were, its so hard to decide what is a DiSish band (apart from obvious ones like 65DOS and Volcano!)
The Spinto Band are ace. Ace Ace ACE
And Broken Social Scene? Their self titled album is the best thing I've heard in the last year. It's an amazing album. Not a weak track on it
a lot. spinto band are dull though. i don't care for les incompetents either.
I guess Emmy the great...she isn't total crap, but it doesn't match up to the press releases for me.
me and grockle stand together alone on this one.
I'm suprised so many people dig her...just mediocre music thats been done many times before, but much better.
It must be single indieblokes fantasising about pulling her at one of her gigs.
no, shes pants.
I'd consider any time spent listening to her insanely mediocre cliches, time stolen from me, that I could have spent listening to GOOD music...fucking wank
I bet you've either a) met her b) are friends with her or c) have seen a picture and thought...mmm she could be the future mrs wo.
am I right?
even better...you play in her band.
Honestly. No offence pal, I'm sure she's lovely and all. I've played in bands with people whose music was shit cos I liked them too...
Theres a lot to be said about music made by your buddies
just because music connects with a guy and its by a girl, it doesnt meant they wanna jump their bones.
women express emotion in many different ways to guys. emmy does it with a wonderful surreal edge that bright eyes or someone like that could never muster.
if you don't like m.ward or neutral milk hotel you'll not understand.
bollocks. I'm not being sexist.
Its just that
a) shes cute
b) her music isn't that great.
I don't like M.Ward or Neutral Milk Hotel, you're right, but that's 'cos I'm an intolerable snob about music that isn't from the sixties...
So...I might be 'wrong' about E the G as far as an opinion could be wrong, but maybe I've been spoiled by the fact that women generally have to be 10 times better than men to get anywhere in the music business...hence Margo Guryan, Judee Sill, Joni Mitchell being so fucking good, etc
have you heard Almost Crimes or Cause=Time? I can't see how anyone could not like them! Ah well different strokes for different folks etc.
I like Apple or a Gun by volcano! but that's about it. And I haven't really heard anything I like by them.
That guy from Les Incompetents voice really grates!
Impossible. And what a contrived response.
no, they are shit.
Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down up his head...
Ever heard of 'The Scaffold' featured Maccas brother, and made a song called 'lily the pink'
they'd have been ashamed to release that. Fucking rubbish
wouldn't say they are particularly loved on here though. Whenever I get off on one of my anti beatle rants, at least a couple of people agree
have an average rating of 8 from 67 users.
So Larrikin Love. They're fucking shit.
And what's with all this about 65DOS?!? They're incredible.
I'm not too sure about Guillemots though, I really don't 'get' them at all. I just find them a bit boring.
Boris are shit. Seriously.
Forward Russia. I've tried, really tried, because I greatly admire their DIY stance. But they're shit.
The Guillemots, Les Incompetents, Larrikin Love, Fields and Regina Spektor seem to get ecstatic responses on here and I'm very meh about all of them. The Spinto Band do have that one song with the kazoos.
Volcano are much better live than on record.
Xiu Xiu. Grow up, you guys.
to get into Forward Russia either. I've listened to a few tracks, but it didn't really do anything for me. I'm sure they are great live though (as everyone says they are)
I'm just sick of reading about them on here. I know that with each new release they push the boundaries of popular music further into unchartered territories, but they just don't do it for me like Def Leppard do.
'sjust pop music, maaaaaaaaan. It's not trying to be big or clever. Not many bands do three minute pop songs as well as them
See: Brown Boxes, Mandy (YES YES YES) or Crack The Whip for proof of this
but Ive never been able to get on with animal collective. I've tried but they leave me cold
They collectively suck.
I don't like Forward Russia either. Lots of bluster and no tunes.
!!!, mainly because the singer sounds unbearably smug.
Death From Above 1979
well, we still have a similarity of 0.2611.
DFA1979 are like party-tastic greatness!
Word, they're dancetastic!!!
I agree with the other ones though. I haven't really heard enough Forward Russia to make a judgement. They seemed alright.
I'm actually the only person in the world not to like McLusky. But really, great song titles aside, what's the appeal?
Fuzz bass! Noise! Screaming! Most of the songs are really catchy too and that helps.
Forward Russia. I thought I was alone in not liking them. I did give them a good try. Oh! and Emmy The Great as well.
Take heart from the fact that I think I agree with you. Yes.
on two singles, so I need to research a little bit more to prove it to myself. One day, I hope to have a catalogue of hate as thorough as yours :)
Itsuko Got Married and Steven Fucking Spielberg. Sorry, I lied about it being two, it's actually three.
someone who is both a liar AND an Inspiral Carpets fan...
One of the best singles bands of the early 90's. Yes.
go on the name a lot of the time. The ultimate time-saving device :)
I won't be seeing them though, so you can tag along with me as we explore something with a vague tune that sounds less like a cat being dragged across steaming hot shit.
i'm warning you.
Please GOD no.
tears from my eyes.
i take insults towards Bearsuit as insults towards me. Although worse because i'm worth insulting and they're not.
i'm sad like that.
it'd be good if they played again, Oxford loves them too it seems.
i think Truck just don't think to ask the 'Suit though, really.
P-C never asks them apparently.
isn't it about time someone cut off your ears? You don't deserve them.
but seriously, I've got a point.
keep hearing great stuff about them, but there myspace tunes put me off.
see them live.
you are laughable, bearing in mind you rate the libertines, the vines and franz fucking ferdinand so highly.
they are a good band.
I was sure they were shit!
now there's a band I'd gladly tear my eyes out before seeing live again.
Are you stupid? I guess so.
After all, you think Coheed and Cambria made the best album of 2005(!!) and you like Finch and the Mars Volta. These bands are actually responsible for three of the very worst albums of 2005. You have no concept of good music.
That might be insulting coming from someone with good judgment.
Why didn't you ask me why I didn't like the pixies? Instead of having a go at my music taste...
Grow up man.
As I suspected, your musical taste (or lack thereof) provided a clear answer to the question. Furthermore, a grown-up would not be afraid to defend the music they like. I have no problem doing so.
To be fair, I am quite happy with my musical taste, and I don't particularly believe I have a bas taste in music.
I also don't understand the relevance of your last two sentences.
I am usually not this patient, but I will attempt to break it down for you.
You said that you did not think I should have taken a shot at your musical taste. You then instructed me to "Grow up man." The last two sentences reflected my disagreement with you on both issues while also taking you to task for thinking you were in any position to tell someone else to grow up. It wasn't that hard to follow.
I, unlike yourself, am unable to defend my own music taste. I don't believe defending my music taste has anything to do with the 'argument, In other words, I don't feel I need to defend my music taste. I think you unnecassarily called it into question, when you could have just had a go at my disliking of the Pixies. It was an immature way of defending a band you like.
Defending your musical taste has a lot to do with posting on a music-related bulletin board (I didn't think you were new to this, but maybe you need a reminder...). Furthermore, once you pompously decided that you were in a position to tell other people to grow up, it became necessary to point out that if you are so grown up, you ought to be able to justify your own musical taste (particularly on a fucking music message board). However, in these particular circumstances, I have the luxury of not needing to defend the Pixies at all since it is so very obviously your musical taste which is at fault (check your profile again for details).
interested to know your views of my tastes then? as you are checking profiles.
you will see coheed and cambria AND the pixies. does mean i have shit taste aswell?
I'd say that dichotomy suggests someone who is probably musically confused. To be certain, let's examine the big picture. Sure, you like System of a Down (shit), but you also like Jeff Buckley (good). And yes, maybe you do like the Polyphonic Spree (shit again), but you also like Interpol (good again). As I look over your list, there continues to be a puzzling, although admittedly intriguing, mix of crappy and good bands. So my initial instinct was right: you are confused, but hey, you're trying.
And yes, I am a poor typist
Who also likes Jeff Buckley and Interpol have a shit music taste.
First, your profile fails to include these alleged facts. Second, it really is too little too late. Look at your band list. Judas Priest? Okay, Halford can sing. The rest is silly.
But if you check my full list of ratings, Jeff Buckley is clearly in there. And I'm sure there are other artists you like...
I looked at the whole list...and the bad seriously outweighs the good. Dream Theater? Some sins cannot be forgiven.
I've lost the energy now. I've calmed down...
are you to slag of some of my favourite bands??
what do you listen to, i notice no ratings at all. and as for my mix, i just like a hell of a lot of stuff. so sue me.
and for the record, system of a down are fucking incredible.
I am Mike, and I didn't just slag some of your favorite bands; I also praised some of them. By the way, System of a Down are incredibly BAD.
I will be adding the bands I like to my profile in the next day or two. Keep checking back. I realize I have been lazy in that regard. I promise I will get around to it.
to seeing if you are an indie music snob or not.
I don't need to defend my music taste. I don't like the Pixies, everyone knows that, and the fact that you are brushing off my thought because I don't have a music taste is somewhat arrogant and also extremely fucking rude.
At the end of the day, You started the argument by having a go at the bands (or albums) I like, you didn't defend the Pixies, therefore i don't need to defend Coheed and Cambria or The Mars Volta. It's fairly simple...
"...I don't have music taste..."
- I like that you seem to be admitting this without much coaxing.
"...I don't need to defend Coheed and Cambria and The Mars Volta."
- You know, the more I think about it, the more I think you may be right. I mean, it really would be a waste of your time since it would be virtually impossible to do with any success. That said, you are clearly without credibility, and therefore your inclusion of the Pixies in this discussion is utterly ludicrous. Thank you for making this easy.
calm down guys.
The only thing you pick up on... is a typo. See my comment up there.
are crap too
I'm not just saying it for kicks
I just really, really struggle to see why they are held in such high esteem
Oh well, horses and courses
He might damage them.
The rest of your taste appears to be fairly good. It may just be that the Postal Service damaged your ears and/or brain. They've been known to have that effect on people.
Hopefully one day it'll all click and I'll fall in love with them
*puts on Give Up*
Some people don't like some bands, whereas some other people do.
THE INDENTS MAN!
I thought I was long rid of that Froggo tag
Damn that disguised amphibian hooker...
Thanks for stating the obvious. You're performing a real public service, not to mention the fact that comments like that really forward the discussion on a music message board.
Thats a constructive conversation
Lightning Bolt. I can't see what the fuss is all about.
Mogwai, Slint & GY!BE.
I've never been a big fan of the Pixies. The reformation gigs were awful, too. They looked as if they'd rather be anywhere else (well, that's based on the one I was at and footage from Coachella).
The Mars Volta, as a spectacle - an inspiring, all-consuming ever-expanding beast of a band - spank the crap out of the dull indierawk of The Pixies FO'REAL. The Mars Volta could widdle and wobble while I fill my brain with ale and I would be very happy indeed.
Of course, they're not a patch on the nevergonnaleavemystereoever At The Drive-In. Gosh I HEART that band still...
I fucking hate the Mars Volta, they do nothing for me whatsoever. Their live show made me want to pour nail polish remover into my eyeballs. I'd rather listen to Miles Hunt shit into a tin can from the top of a wardrobe.
Opinions are fun
I agree with whoever said 65daysofstatic.
Their album actually sounds like the soundtrack to Quake 2.
good game that. NiN did the soundtrack to Quake 1, apparently.
