Vinyl has come back in a big way. If bands started producing short runs of numbered cassette tapes, would you buy them?
because I still listen to tapes in my old, old car. I don't think many people would though, as the sound quality is undeniably poor.
I love cassetes!
they're really bloody cheap, but you can get get great sounding cassette tapes now. they do degrade quite quickly though which is a downer.just wondering, we might do a short run of say 100 to try it out
They do have a certain charm to them.
Plus there were all those cassette-only labels back in the early 80s, so maybe you could make references to that.
or sound quality or any of the things vinyl has which has made it come back.
Generally, a bit of a pain in the arse. I'm trying to either replace all of mine, or rip them.
One great thing about them 'back in the day' was that you'd actually listen to albums all the way through and wouldn't skip tracks for fear of a) caning the battery in your walkman or b) missing the start of the next track.
I'd still buy them though, yeah. If I liked the music and it was the only way to own it.
goodbooks did didnt they?
cheers for the opinions. seems like it's maybe worth a try but only ever as a short run. the benefit being that it still has a novelty factor and is so damn cheap. vinyl is still pretty expensive to have pressed but maybe that'll come down with more bands doing it now
Are cassettes cheaper than CDrs?
cassettes have ever really appealed to me. I've been gutted too many times when cherished recordings have been lost because they're too unreliable.
that the Futureheads sent out before their first album was released.
but we might as well get all dewy eyed about wax cylinders.
good link above. enjoy it i did
However http://www.undereducated.com/ are putting out a series of split cassetes that seem doing well.
I personally wouldn't by them, rubbish sound quality without the aesthetic qualities of vinyl. Plus if you're self releasing CDrs you can make some pretty lovely artwork for them.
i'll check that out. i just wondered really whether it'd be worth doing mainly for a novelty factor. a short run. bands are always looking for other bits and bobs for their merch. we're trying to do a little comic or paper too but i don't really think it'd end up working. anyone know any places tha do cheaper vinyl pressing services? the ones i've checked otu so far, it seems to cost bout 700-800 for a pressing of 500
