I have Rain Dogs and Real Gone and loving them a lot at the moment. What TW albums should i investigate next?
But get Frank's wild years and Swordfish trombones first.
1982-1987 seems to be his most consistent period(according to allmusic).
Nighthawks At The Diner
Nighthawks At The Diner.
Nighthawks At The Diner
i should get Nighthawks At The Diner by any chance?
Seriously though, you can usually pick all his albums up for a fiver. I've got nearly all of them now, and I haven't been disappointed with any yet.
You picked up on my subliminal message...
I noticed they were about a fiver on Amazon when i looked so i might get a few(lot) of them from there.
and Heart attack and vine
but yes, get them all.
nighthawks at the diner
All so good.
I NEED TO SEE WAITS LIVE
which ruins the fact that he's an ok artist - but not THAT good.
See also Scott Walker who I adorex10 (own everything he's done) but am not scared to admit his work is flawed - try it sometime, its a good feeling.
opinion not list!
opinion not list!
its ok - i reported myself to the faults dept!
Is your mission in life to be the biggest possible forum tit?
that is a valid opinion on artists who are held in high esteem to the extreme that they cannot be criticised - come on man lighten up - and my own reposte was satire - if I came on here going 'Ive got cum on my Spaced boxset and am doing an xbox from behind' then maybe I would be a tit - youre being too 'Teach' today!
Coming on a Tom Waits thread and calling everyone who likes Tom Waits some sycophantic fakers who want to appear clever? The people you are dissing, with no grounds whatsoever, include me, so I have absolutely no hesitation in telling you to shove that post up your arse. If anything, posting things like that is trying to make YOU look clever and knowing and outside-of-the-herd for having such supposedly alternative opinions.
god lighten up!
clever and knowing!!!!
In my circle of friends i only know two people who like him. Everyone else thinks he is a moany old man with no voice.
I don't know where your idea comes from though. I suppose it might be experience with other people rather than a 'fact'.
I can't stand some of the art-rock crappy bands mentioned on here for the same reason - see forward russia.
and the fact that we can trade mock insults and interesting opinions - without that we may as well be dead - most of my mates like Tom Waits but they're not cunts for that, the same way that i'm not a bleeding vagina for not being interested in him - life eh?
crappy bands - ????? goodness knows what i meant there
i can't think of anything i want more, im not sure if that qualifies as pathetic or not.
but I'm guessing that's not so high on your list, eh...
just out of interest?
Japan winning it on the other hand, i would like to see.
as well Prole...
where has my house gone?
Closing Time (73) and The Heart Of Saturday Night (74) - mainly bar room ballads and love songs sung in a *GASP* normal voice!
Nighthawks At The Diner (74) - live album. Good jokes, few good individual tracks, works well as a whole. Wouldn't recommend getting it next though.
Small Change (75) - Critics either view this or Swordfishtrombones as his masterpiece. To be fair they both are. This one has far more piano. And Step Right Up. Buy this next.
Foreign Affairs (76) - like a brilliant film soundtrack. Potters Field is amazing. A little cheesy in places (see the Bette Midler duet) but also got two of his very best songs (Burma Shave, A Sight For Sore Eyes).
Blue Valentine (78) - My favourite probably. Lots of swagger. Jazzy. Occasionally sparse. Very "1978". Get this too.
Heartattack and Vine (80) - like a mix of the previous two but not quite as good. Some good individual songs. Wouldn't recommend buying it next.
Swordfishtrombones (83) - In places, utterly mental. In other places, not. Totally diverse. The precursor to Rain Dogs, and better too. Get this too.
In summary - get Small Change, Blue Valentine and Swordfishtrombones. You can get all three for about £15 total!
everything. starting with small change, alice, franks wild years, swordfishtrombones, the black rider.
i forgot heart of saturday night. putnam county is my most played song by 10 plays. THAT'S how good nighthawks at the diner is.
that's really, really ace.
