Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, early Genesis...
Prog Rock is awesome.
Who's with me?
Pure Reason Revolution, Mars Volta.
you got me on 'Floyd and Mars Volta...should i check out Rush? i find the cheese factor FAR TOO HIGH with Yes - Jon Anderson annoys me immensely. I have a PRR promo thing...6 Cautionary Tales...i think...should i listen?
listen to it forthwith. by which i mean NOW.
One of the most influential bands of all time, definitely had an influence on Mars Volta.
You can find all of their albums in Music Zone for £6. Try 2112 first.
early pink floyd, psych era led zep, and more recently mars volta, maramduke duke, 65daysofstatic, janes addiction and oceansize: the thing which comes from that is PROG IS NOT DEAD IT IS EVOLVING!
Looks like a good book!
I quite like some of their stuff.
Kyuss prog rock? If so its the best music ever!
But they fucking own!
they're just different. very different.
radiohead - boundary pushing musicianship and concepts
bearsuit - songs about space. costumes.
then everything is prog.
someone in a "prog" band's birthday. the artwork was fucking great.
come on. progress doesn't have to be forward...
ELP and Yes are toss, but I love 'em.
Wish You Were Here is one of my fave albums. Amen on Deep Purple's too- I heard their Live in Japan CD and they do a 20 minute long version of Space Truckin' which is INSANE and brilliant.
And modern day stuff- Tool, Oceansize, Mars Volta, Amplifier (maybe) all ace.
I LOVE the prog.
wish you were here disappointing. Yes, shine on is one of the best things ever, and yes the title track is amzingly beautiful.
But the others are a bit meh...
Very Tool influenced but still fantastic. Totally agree with Tool, Oceansize and Mars Volta too, love all three bands.
ELP and Yes are definitely not toss, you gotta listen to to them innit. They're fantastic.
Dark Side Of The Moon is my fave Floyd album, obvious I know, but it is pure genius!
the scope of it is just amazing. i do love dsotm though.
i need to buy all the other albums at some point...
I said I love ELP and Yes!
It's everyone else I've met who's said "What the hell?"
Sorry, I didn't word it very well.
Pink Floyd, Yes, Mars Volta, Pure Reason Revolution, Tool, Radiohead, Secret Machines.
Fucking awesome, all of them
You sicken me.
in the court of crimson king is one of my fave albums of all time. its one of those albums that is so well crafted that it makes you question every other musicians talents.
Secret Machines as prog? I'm not sure...
so it's open season.
I wouldn't call them 'prog'. ;-D
they do kinda do concept albums. does prog necessarily have to be overblown goodness?
CAN PROG BE POP?
took me an age to get into.but so good.
i was raised on the stuff
pink floyd, hawkwind, etc
the mars volta live album?
no...i've heard varying opinions of their live shows...so im kinda wary of it...tempted though...
PRR are poo!
PRR are ace!
this could go on for a while...
i may have to buy it...
its the sex.it jizzes over their other stuff.
Prog rock = a very bad thing
some people say PRR are poo. But they aren't. They are great
answer me THAT?
brought up on Yes, Pink Floyd and Rush
so yes, i love them.
Marillion bored me live.
Rush stunned me live.
Check out Soft Machine; especially the Peel sessiions. Mew are progging along nicely at the minute.
i like the odd prog track, people like The Nice, Deep Purple if you count them, some early Genesis too. But otherwise i think Rik Wakeman and want to hurl things from my throat.
Well they're both great bands, whether prog, progressive or probiotic.
by King Crimson
dearie me, it's gooooooooooooooooooooooood.
's solo albums, are usually hilariously shit.
hes probably my second biggest keyboard hero of all time, but he didnt half create some religious bollocks.
Looking at some ofthe song titles now "the snow lion" etc...officially daft as.
However some of YE$'s material is insanely good, i think if rick wakeman wasnt a bit of a fucked up christian things could have turned out better, reading his biography he's a bit weird...
Pink Floyd have never really stunned me in the way i feel they should have, i can enjoy them, but i think they surpass any band in the hype stakes apart from perhaps The Beatles, and as yet i feel ive yet to truly enjoy them, despite having all the albums, dvds' and 5.1 remixes.
Im not sure about the mars volta, theyre not what id traditionally have said was prog rock, but then i dont like them...at all.
Definately worth it for the album art like!
tool, mars volta, porcupine tree, i love em all.
ycni:milo + purereasonrevolution are ok too.
Never was a floyd fan, are radiohead prog? i would say soundgarden are pretty damn prog too.
but prog? what is it? owt other than 4/4? or just better than yer average shite?
Operation Mindcrime is a genius album.
is loosely based on..
- Irregular/Unregocnisable time signatures
- Classical/Religious Influences
- Mythological Influences
- Irregular selection of instruments - eg flutes, medieval instruments eg lute
- heavy use of synthesisers
- each recording probably uses a fuck load of tracks in the studio
- songs often comprise virtuoso style solo passages on each instrument
- complex use of harmony, often similiar to that of early 20th Century composers
- complex polyrhythms
- elaborate stage shows, more akin to theatre than to a traditional gig
- concept albums
- albums that are comprised solely in one tonic key
- homoerotic stage costumes
- sometimes no clear melody or "riff" to a song, emphasis often placed on rhythmic devices or complex harmony structures than melody.
Prog = Progressive
