it's all about biggie
highly overrated, yes. if im gunna listen 2 that sort of thing, pixies is my flavour. but wait......are u talking about the 60s flower pop band?
An interesting assessment you have there, but an assertion made from blocks of falsehood.
Try Mr. 2Pac, now THEMS some licks.
overrated. could never really get into them myself.the grunge genre of music never did it for me. sonic youth and pixies were/are excellent but were never really grunge.
that is all.
and that's all you need
DiSclaimer: from what i can make out, raz isn't the kind of dude who just regurgitates everyone elses musical opinions, and frequently likes to take the piss so this isnt necessarily levelled at him.
that out of the way, it seems pretty fashionable to shit in nirvana all of a sudden. 'in utero' is one of my favourite albums (yeah i know, 'yawn', whatever), and as bloated and overproduced as nevermind might sound, it changed my life in a measurable way when i started listening to music a decade or so ago.
i like 'em.
So I've never really understood why everyone thinks nirvana were so good. They sound like a pub band with a good producer to me.
Pearl jam > Nirvana
But terrible lyrics...Why do people acclaim him as a lyricist?!?
as has been said. the thing is to try to make sure that their overratedness does not make you overcompensate and scream 'crap'.
as for biggie... i dunno
Nevermind - ace
In Utero - acest
Unplugged - acest +1
Wishkah - ace
Incesticide - alright
does NOT translate to having to like a band. Go home.
You are a plum. Go shoot yourself in the face.
ace of base
I imagine that makes us both 25. There was a time when I would listen to both Nirvana and Ace of Base and appreciate them both equally.
That time has gone now.
when ace of base were around. i didn't listen to nirvana till yr 7 though. it was a dramatic shift. but i still like both bands. nirvana are overrated, but not shit.
Poor mans Tad
to that there peter doherty y'know, he's like kurt cobain - but alive!!! arf
fook it, they were of their time, and possibly haven't stood up too well along the way - like when you know youre right was unearthed it immediately felt decades old...! They were important for a long time but have been reduced to nothing more than HMV memorabilia for teens too lazy to look for someone that's still around and matters.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
They were a middling act in America and only slightly bigger over here (and thats only because the NME loves a headcase). If he hadn't blown his face off then they would have amounted to nothing. Even Pearl Jam have a better back catalogue.
consistently outsell nirvana ?
either way all three are pretty darn good
but Ten has currently shifted about 1m more copies than Nevermind..
any other band in the last 30 years. Amazingly important. Killed off hair metal and overblown rock.
And, they are fucking amazing. I always thiink "ah, I can't be bothered to listen to Nirvana" but then you hear any of their tunes and they're always fucking brilliant.
I don't know why, it's simple stuff, nothing that original but somehow they're head and shoulders above so many other bands trying to compete.
Nirvana were good! In Utero was my favourite.
Biggie was great too.
why do Bon Jovi still sell out stadium after stadium around the world?
the general public are idiots.
who still play to arenas the world over
*cough* mudhoney *cough*
*cough* JANE'S ADDICTION *cough*
are from the same scene as nirvana?
ok thats bollocks.
its like trying to defend the maginot line defending my earlier statement. people will just go round it.
were better than nirvana.obviously.
is better than Nirvana
because there's always gonna be soft rock wankers. But it really opened up the masses eyes to what a modern RAWK band should be like. It's the spate of copycat crap that you have to put up with these days.
*Thinks of Nine Black Alps*
A bunch of 12 year olds who weren't even born when Nirvana were active? Or the readers of Guitar Bore Monthly?
I think that they are a decent band that were really good at what they did. Saying that I don't get excited about them in the way that I once did. Nevermind is undoubtedly immense.
and although i agree that nevermind was/is certainly overrated, and certainly not their best album by any means (that goes to in utero. i dont reckon unplugged counts as a proper album, does it?) i still love listening to it because it reminds me of when i was fifteen and realised that this was better than muse.
last album chronically disappointed me. 6/10 band for me
but they aren't mindblowing
are crap. Like my old bandmates.
were/are quite good.
grunge was a fucking plague on the earth. And i only know about the big guns in that scene like soundgarden, pearl jam, alice in chains and they were all shit. Just think how bad all the copycats must have been.
that you think that all those bands were 'shit'.
alice in chains are music to kill yourself to, but genius. admittedly i lack knowledge of soundgarden.
so much as fantastically written songs dressed up in noise and distortion.
and I think both in utero (and to a lesser extent) Nevermind still stand up incredibly well today. As a songwriter, cobain was remarkable. In many other respects they aren't notable, but the songs are.
pearl jam, alice in chains, nirvana all sound very different to me.
but i think the commonalities were more in ethos (i.e. this whole 'killing hair metal' thing), location (and often personnel) and time period than anything else.
They were fucking great!
They got so big because the fucked up twat killed himself, plus the tunes are a piece of piss to play, facilitating easy cover versions.
They weren't a patch on pearl jam, soundgarden and tool, but not many bands were.
because they weren't a multi-million selling band before Cobain killed himself.
i think you'll find 'in utero' charted number 1 in the UK and the US. which was released a good while before he redecorated his kitchen.
were pretty conservative I reckon. Cheesy like.
it's just horrendous when songs are simple and easy to play!
Pearl Jam have always been middle of the road bores who happened to dress like a scruffy grunge band.
