Which is nice.
i picked up that issue but haven't read it all yet.
i never see it anywhere...
in the old blue last, and i think you can still get it in rough trade.
the luminaire, the spitz and beyond retro.
is bloody great. i'd pay for this schizzle.
their features are toppo-notcho.
it's the best music press out there. By quite a way. I love their layout and they always interview and feature great bands. Like the Archie Bronson Outfit who should be about 20 times larger than they are curently.
got bored in Fopp and picked one of these up and ending up just standing there for ages reading it. right by the door, i felt like an idiot looking back, but it was a really good mag.
and they slated off teh Raconteurs which is something that no other bloody music press seems to be doing - THEY HAVE ABOUT 2DECENT SONGS. jeez.
i'll be the first to mention what it actually says.
it basically denounces mystery jets (and i'll have to type this all out as its so luidcrous): "Rich Hippy kids who live in the Soho of the southwest, Twickenham. Don't make me laugh. ROmanticising about Eel Pie island? It's about as bohemian as living in Notting Hill! Musically they are a total shambles, like early Scritti Politi before they discovered melody. Stylistically they look like the Levellers dressed by Hackett. Which couldn't work.
And there is something very suspicious about it all if you ask me, The Swedish retro pop act The Venus, who briefly visited these shores last year, had an old dad playing the drums, but the rest of them looked sharp and sounded like The Small Faces and The Kinks. Fair play. It was a gimmick, not disguised. Their dad was the drummer in an original beat combo in Sweden in 1965 and it just worked.
I reckon the Jets must have some sinister connection with the media mafia"
then goes on to slag off Battle, and, using these two bands as examples, says that thats why the NME is shit.
then goes on to say that instead of the nme, you should read STool Pigeon, Under the Radar, DiS, icast and Gorrila vs Bear.
so a big lol. firstly its a piece of shit article (everything about the mystery jets bit is inaccurate of just embarrassing, and badly written), and secondly, it slags off MJs (hardly shunned by DiS, with the 9/10 review of the album) and Battle, who are super-lol-ably managed by former DiS editor Gareth Dobson, to go on to praise DiS.
it was written by "The Eighties Pop Star".
but yeah, SP is generally great.
in my opinion, Scritti Politti were at their peak 'before they discovered melody'!
before or after melody-discovery? cos thats GREAT.
but simply put - mystery jets are, undeniably, a very melodic band. apart from maybe Zootime
