What do ya reckon?
*cough* PM me *cough*
new album, innit.
is it any good?
on all counts
definately not worth the wait
You think? Why? I've listened to it almost constantly since I got it, it's stunning! It's a far better album than Lateralus, and it's almost as good as Aenima. What don't you like about it?
wherease previous albums jumped around in terms of velocity, bpm etc, 10000 days just seems to flow on by. There are no songs as catchy as 'Parabola', there are none as heavy hitting as 'Ticks and Leeches' and a lot of it sounds like album tracks from 'Aenema'. other songs, such as 'The Pot' go back to the Undertow sort of sound, but dont hit the marks that tracks such as 'Prison Sex' did.
the time changes have become predictable, no sense of suprise.
i also dont like the vocals on most tracks, it seems like Maynard is trying to disguise his voice for half of the album.
i also dont like the lyrics on most tracks, especially ones like on the eighth track.
there are some good tracks dont get me wrong, i love Right In Two and the single is growing on me. The Pot, which i noted earlier is quite good. maybe the problem is i expected TOO much of a progression.
is more immediate for me than anything on Lateralus
its definately a TooL single, but id say that Parabola was more immeadiate, the same with Schism. actually, i think i did already say it.
you're going to review it for DiS then Jordan?
I personally think you're talking crap. Why can't you ever judge an album on it's own merits, rather than always trying to compare it to something else?
For Tool there is no comparison. Tool is about destroying your ego, Maynard uses his voice as an instrument in the band, rather than being the lead singer of a backing band.
In case you didn't know, with Lateralus, the vocals were just added onto the end, with 10,000 days, like aenima, undertow and opiate, all songs were written with Maynard there right from the start.
so why are the last two paragraphs relevant? if you are saying Maynard uses his voice as an instrument, then fine, i dont like the way he plays his instrument.
and why does it matter whether vocals are added onto the end or place there first either?
and i am judging the album on its own merits. its not like the album disappoints me because how good their other albums are. the album disappoints me because of the quality of it.
ps- no, i wont be reviewing the album for DiS. i suppose there is no point as it will be full of 'crap' (eg, opinions different to yours)
but its prettyy fantastic. sounds like the song lateralus to me. its utterly immense. I cannot wait for the album.
...give my opinion of it yet. Tool always takes me a lot of listens to fully 'get' and form my opninion on it. My opinion so far is that about 20% of it is immediate (some awsome riffs such as in Vicarious and Jambi), whereas the rest of it hasn't grabbed me yet, but I'm sure it will come May 2nd and I give the actual CD a few proper listens.
...to not get excited about this album, but I'm failing miserably. When is it out officially?
1st May. You can't not be excited.
Vicarious is an awesome song, but I havn't heard any of the other tracks yet.
Lateralus was the best album AS A WHOLE piece of music.
AEnima however had the better big tracks (Third Eye, AEnima, Pushit), but some of the other tracks were a bit dodgy and obvious in-jokes.
Tool always try to challenge how we look at metal/rock, and that's why people get divided over their albums (apart from Undertow!!). People still argue over Zep albums, Beatles albums, Doors albums.......Tool are one of the best metal bands around because they challenge this strophic writing technique that so many bands use.
If anyone says "I don't like them cos they're Metal" has to realise that they are trying to put a message across about very complicated issues (both lyrically and musically), and they just happen to be loud.
Of course, there are other great rock/metal bands around.
Down, for example, are the best thing Phil Anselmo has done for a good few years. They not really metal: stoner rock is their tipple. Just like Kyuss (Queens of the Stone Age's better previous incarnation).
But that's a whole other thread.
But what has happened to metal and rock?
I saw HIM on TV last night, and thought it was the most lackluster performance since Busted went on stage after chasing the dragon (alledgely). What a lame piece of crap.
This pop-rock, endorsed by Geffen and all his Axel loving friends, has gone far enough.
Oh, I'm off to have a think.
You're talking about Tool and Down, the same two bands I can't wait to see and won't stop going on about. Well done
the return of your favourite king crimson tribute band. woop.
When will this band stop releasing this type of self-indulgent records that basically, use the same riff as they did on Forty Six and Two?
Adam isn't the best guitarist ever, but I prefer that because it means that you don't get any widdle!
the only solos are drum solos!! hurray!
they need to stop using the same riffs and melodies. Maynard James Blablabla was singing these melodies on the last APC album.
