An Open Letter To VH1 Viewers

I feel I should point out the following:

A. "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you" is clearly not 5th best lyric of all time. I think you know that really don't you?

B. "One life with each other, sisters, brothers" is clearly not even the best lyric in the U2 "One", let alone the best lyrics ever.

I'm prepared to admit to quite liking the song (although I think Johnny Cash performs it better than U2 do) but surely

"Have you come here for forgiveness/have you come to raise the dead/have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?" is a much better lyric. In fact I'd say the line in the poll is one of the weaker lines in the song.

In conclusion your "Nation's Favourite Lyric" poll was quite, quite rubbish. I'm sorry, I'm probably a snob for saying it but that's just the way it is.

    • .......

i hate people, they always make me angry to be part of society.

if someone said that was their favourite ever lyric to my face, i'd find it hard not to swear at them.

    • Is the full list anywhere online?

      As above.

Also its VH1 man, what did you expect!!!

      godisinthetv @theguywithnousername | 17 Apr '06, 15:38 | X
      • I don't think it is.

I did shamefully have a look at VH1's website but I couldn't see the list in full. The top 5 are on BBC New's entertainment section.

Obviously I knew the poll would be pretty bad but I hoped the winner would be something where I'd think "well, that's a bit obvious but I can see why people went for it" rather than something that just left me thinking "What? How is that even a good lyric?"

        theguywithnousername @godisinthetv | 17 Apr '06, 15:44 | X
        • True

I just dispair at most of these polls to be quite honest, its all so subjective.

          • hahhaha

The top five lyrics in the VH1 poll were:

            1. U2 - One. "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers."

            2. The Smiths - How Soon is Now? "So you go, and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die."

            3. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit. "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us."

            4. Bob Marley - Redemption Song. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds, have no fear for atomic energy, 'cause none of them can stop the time."

            5. Coldplay - Yellow. "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you."

Yellow!Even Coldplay admit that lyric means nothing!

            godisinthetv @godisinthetv | 17 Apr '06, 15:50 | X
            • So basically...

1.Not the best line in the song.

2.Doesn't really make sense without the "There's a club if you'd like to go/you could meet someone who really loves you" bit.

3.Didn't Kurt Cobain get pissed off 'cos no-one really understood what he was saying with this?

4.Bob Marley was undoubtedly a great man. He was also, I believe, a man who smoked a lot of pot. I feel these lyrics have much more to do with the latter than the former.

5.As you say, Coldplay admit it's pretty meaningless. Are there people there who actually believe that the stars shine purely for their own benefit? It wouldn't shock me if Johnny Borrell did but I'd hope few others do.

              theguywithnousername @godisinthetv | 17 Apr '06, 16:11 | X
              • 2

Number 2 is good, but like above, it need the club bit, or its confusing.

              • mmm

yes, nice bit of pathetic fallacy there from mr martin, bless his little cotton socks

                alexduck @theguywithnousername | 17 Apr '06, 20:39 | X
    • "I know you well, I know your smell"

      should clearly top the poll.

      piptasia @theguywithnousername | 17 Apr '06, 15:41 | X
      • Don't tell me

"It's a common fetish for a doting man to ballerina on the coffee table cock in hand" was #2? Or possibly "I saw your face in a crowded place"

        JohnM @piptasia | 17 Apr '06, 15:43 | X
        • Luckily James Blunt...

          at least wasn't top 5.

Then I might actually have cried.

          theguywithnousername @JohnM | 17 Apr '06, 15:45 | X
        • It was

          "You're beautiful, you're beautiful, you're beautiful, it's true". Duh.

"I've never heard such emotion expressed like that before" gushed Ivan, setting himself on fire with a fiery brand.

          piptasia @JohnM | 17 Apr '06, 15:46 | X
    • ???

      Full list: http://www.utvlive.com/newsroom/indepth.asp?id=10324&pt=e

      18. Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot
"Watching The People Get Lairy, Is Not Very Pretty I Tell Thee, Walking Through Town Is Quite Scary, And Not Very Sensible Either"

Whoever thinks one of the greatest lyrics of all time needs help.

      KayB @theguywithnousername | 17 Apr '06, 16:41 | X
      • well

it's better than any of the top 5...

        ex_cynic @KayB | 17 Apr '06, 16:45 | X
        • Your joking...

          Right?

          godisinthetv @ex_cynic | 17 Apr '06, 17:21 | X
      • This made me laugh out loud.

X Factor judge and Girls Aloud manager Louis Walsh said: "One is a timeless classic song. I think the lyrics are just fantastic, one life - because everybody only has one life."

        godisinthetv @KayB | 17 Apr '06, 17:25 | X
        • god

          that is one shit list

          Annoying_person @godisinthetv | 17 Apr '06, 18:59 | X
          • Only...

Marvin Gaye, Dylan, Bowie and possibly The Kinks really deserve to be anywhere near that list.

And I'm sure Waterloo Sunset has better lyrics in it than that one.

            Azzy @Annoying_person | 17 Apr '06, 21:07 | X
        • :D

          that's amazing

          fishplums @godisinthetv | 17 Apr '06, 20:52 | X
    • glad Morrissey was at number two

but he's written a crapload of better lines

      moribund @theguywithnousername | 17 Apr '06, 20:59 | X
    • Bono is a fucking awful lyricist. I don't understand why people think he's so great.
