Daniel Johnston 'Tribute' at Barbican
Hey
Anyone from DiS go to the Daniel Johnston night at the Barbican on Saturday? Pretty impressive...Kicked off with James Yorkston, then Vic Chesnut, Howe Gelb (with a couple of danes), Teenage Fanclub, Jason Pearce (with strings/backing vocals) and then a typically ramshackle 4 tracks by Daniel himself. Each artist did 2/3 Johnston tracks and then 1 or 2 of their own. Everett True was compereing, and 'entertained' with two dreadful tracks of his own, much to the bemusement of the audience. Very entertaining..
Daniel played!?!?
FUCK! Thought he wasn't even gonna be there. Should really read things more thoroughly.
aye
He walked on stage, guitar still in its case (in trademark tracksuit) and then thrashed his way through 3-4 tracks (1 on the piano) and then left again.
Sadly no sign of Mark Linkous and Jad Fair.
Dammit.
I just know i'll never get the chance to see him in person. I feel stoopid now.
it was
on Friday surely?
I was there, saw the documentary about him beforehand which left me pretty upset and I wasn't sure I was going to make it through the gig after that but it was a great great night. Jason Pierce inparticular was mindblowing.
Shame Daniel didn't play longer though I wasn't expecting him to, but what he did play was fantastic. Do you know what the song he played on the piano was called? Gutted I missed his signing yesterday.
And yes, Everett True, hahaha.
amazing gig
I thought that Vic Chestnutt was the best and was very impressed with Howie Bell when he was playing guitar and piano at the same time with the arm guitar.
I was gutted too Mark Linkous was not there but Daniel was amazing.
Went to the signing the next day and he was a very nice man.
He drew me a sketch with the words hi how are you and his signature (i am so framing that).
Everett True should stick to his day job..
it was very intense and beautiful. everett true should never sing. ever.
